Great Are Thy Tender Mercies, O LORD
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:153-160. This stanza in Psalm 119 starts with RESH, the twentieth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. RESH represents the letter R and stands for Rabbi, or teacher. Its numerical value is 200. The Psalmist asks God to look at his afflictions and deliver him because he has not forgotten the laws of God. He cries out to God for deliverance.
He proclaims that salvation is far from the wicked because they don’t seek the statutes of the LORD. He exalts the LORD saying, “Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD,” and asks God to preserve his life according to His Word and His judgments.
Though he has many enemies who persecute him, he still does not turn away from God’s Word. He is disturbed about the way the faithless live because they disobey God’s Word. He asks God to think about how much he loves the precepts of God and cries out for God’s deliverance from the enemy because of the loving-kindness God has toward him.
The Psalmist ends this stanza by declaring that God’s Word is true from the beginning and all of His righteous judgments will endure forever.

153 RESH. Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.
154 Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word.
155 Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.
156 Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.
157 Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies.
158 I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.
159 Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.
160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

- Have you ever gone through a long period of turmoil as the Psalmist did?
- Did you wonder when God was going to deliver you from the attacks of the enemy?
- Have you learned to stand on God’s Word no matter what your circumstances are?
Prayer of the Day:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us that even in times of trouble we can stand on Your Word. Help us to be faithful to You no matter what our circumstances are. Help us to trust You to deliver us from the enemy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
