Daily Bible Reading “Wise Women” (Proverbs 14:1-14)

Proverbs 14 1 A Wise Woman Build Her HouseWise Women

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 14:1-14. In this Scripture, we are reminded that every wise woman builds her house: but a foolish woman tears her house down.

As women we can either build up our house and the people who live in our home or we can tear them down. Many times it is up to the woman to set the tone for the home. Haven’t you heard the saying, “If mama is happy then everybody is happy, and if mama isn’t happy then nobody is happy?” This statement is true in a lot of ways.

Many of the Scriptures in the book of Proverbs teach us how to discern the people we should hang around. It can help us to know who we should choose for our best friends.

Those who walk in uprightness fear the LORD: but those who are perverse in their ways despise Him.

A rod of pride is in the mouth of the foolish person: but the lips of the wise will preserve them.

Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will tell lies.

A scorner seeks wisdom, and doesn’t find it: but knowledge is easy to those who understand.

It is best to leave the presence of a foolish person, when you don’t perceive knowledge in their mouth.

The wisdom of the prudent person is to understand their way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

Foolish people mock sin: but the righteous person finds favor.

The heart knows its own bitterness; and a stranger does not inter-meddle with their joy.

The house of the wicked will be overthrown: but the sanctuary of the upright will flourish.

Verse 12 is one of my favorite verses from this passage of Scripture, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Sometimes we choose ways that seem right to us at the moment, but in the end they lead to destruction. We need to ask God for His leadership, guidance, and direction in our lives. Only He can help us to make the right choices.

Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that humor is heaviness.

The backslider in heart will be filled with their own ways: and a good person will satisfy themselves.

These Scriptures may also help us to see some of our own short comings. If you notice something in these Scriptures that you need help with, now would be a good time to pray and ask God to forgive you, and to help you do away with those things in your life.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 14:1-14

1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
2 He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.
3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.
7 Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.
10 The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.
11 The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.
14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

Things to think about:

  • What are some ways that a good woman can build her house?
  • What are some characteristics of the foolish mentioned in this Scripture?
  • What are the characteristics of the wise mentioned in this Scripture?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this Scripture in Proverbs help us to learn the difference between the wise person and the ways of those who are foolish. Give us discernment and help us to know who to associate with and who to avoid. Help us to make wise decisions. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “A Foolish Woman” (Proverbs 9:13-18)

A Foolish Woman

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 9:13-18. In this lesson, we learn about Lady Folly. She is a foolish woman who is loud, naive, and lacks knowledge. She sits at the door of her house, or on a bench in the great places of the city, and calls out to those who pass by.

Those who are naive go in, but those who are more thoughtful, she says to them, “Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

They don’t know that the dead are there; and that her guests end up in the depths of hell.

The enemy puts these kinds of people on our path to try to trip us up and cause us to turn away from the Lord and go after our own selfish desires.

We have to be on guard against such temptations. They lead to death and destruction. That is the enemy’s goal to kill, steal and destroy us. He wants to ruin our reputations and use his tactics to destroy us. We have to resist the temptations that he puts before us.

The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that with every temptation God makes a way for us to escape. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

When you are being tempted, look for a way to escape the temptation.

As women, it is important that we make sure we can’t be classified as a foolish woman.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 9:13-18

13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the characteristics of a foolish woman?
  • What kinds of people are taken in by her?
  • What are the end results for those she entices?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we learn about Lady Folly in this Scripture help us to recognize her characteristics. Help us not to be enticed by her cunning ways. Help us to not take up her habits. Help us to use wisdom in dealing with people who are like this. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Happy Mother’s Day” (Proverbs 31:10, 28)

Happy Mothers Day Card and FlowersHappy Mother’s Day

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is Proverbs 31:10, “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” I thought these verses were appropriate for Mother’s Day since it is a day to show honor and appreciation to our mothers for who they are and all they have done for us.

One of the greatest gifts that God gave us, besides the gift of salvation through His Son, is the gift of life and love through our mothers.

Mother’s Day is supposed to be a day of celebration, but for many people, it is a day of remembrance, a day of sadness. As you celebrate Mother’s Day with your family be sensitive to those whose mothers are no longer with them.

Mother’s Day may also be a time of grief for those who have lost children or those who want to have children but haven’t been blessed in that way.

There may be those who are estranged from their children or mothers for one reason or another and so Mother’s Day is sad for them.

Celebrate your mother and enjoy your family, but understand that days like Mother’s Day are hard for some people. Be gentle with them.

My emotions run from one extreme to the other on Mother’s Day and the days surrounding Mother’s Day. Missing my Mama, mother-in-law, and grandmothers are really hard for me since they have all passed away already.

Then there are the feelings of being really blessed to be married to the man God blessed me with as my husband, who loves me unconditionally. We are blessed to have two beautiful daughters, whom we love dearly. We wondered if we would ever have children. For many years Mother’s Day was hard for me because I wanted children so badly, but had not been blessed with them yet. We were married eight years and had two miscarriages before we finally had our girls.

We are also blessed to have five precious grandchildren who are all special in their own way.

If you were not blessed to be raised in a Christian home with a mother who loved you unconditionally, you can know this kind of love through the unconditional, sacrificial love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

All things considered, Mother’s Day is a good day to celebrate through all the laughter and tears. I am thankful for all the people God placed in my life to mold me and make me into the person I am today. I hope it’s a good day for you and your family. I wish you all a Happy Mother’s Day. I love you. May God bless you!

Things to think about:

  • What is your best childhood memory of your mother?
  • What is one word that you would use to describe your mother?
  • What is the most important thing that your mother taught you?
  • What are you most grateful for concerning your mother?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this day to honor the mothers in our lives. Help us to show our love and gratitude for our mothers. Comfort those who have lost their mothers with sweet memories today. We also ask that you comfort those who wish to be mothers, but haven’t been blessed with children yet. Thank you for the gift of children and grandchildren. Thank you for our mothers. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Our life’s work often resides within an obvious passion

What do Vernon Davis and Tia Torres have in common? Both have a unique expression for what they are called to do AND they’re living their life’s work.

Top-ranked NFL tight end and 49ers star Vernon Davis, owns Gallery 85, an exclusive art gallery in Santana Row in San Jose, California. Gallery 85 offers a wide range of visual artists a venue for high-end exposure for their work while raising funds for the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, which promotes arts education and art appreciation for at-risk youth and awards college art school scholarships for talented inner-city youth.

Some would say Vernon’s life’s work is to be a great tight end, while others would say it is running his nonprofit organization. Another perspective is that both are part of his life’s work.

Then there’s Tia Torres, an iconic figure who rescues pit bulls. What started as a part-time interest in rescuing dogs has become Tia’s life’s work. Having worked as a gang counselor at one point in her career, her passion for rescuing animals turned into what is now known to millions as the TV show Pit Bulls and Parolees.

In the late 1990s, during a visit to a local animal shelter, Tia met a four-year-old pit bull, which made a huge impression on her. She touched Tia’s heart and was instrumental in Tia’s pursuing her new calling. The journey to save pit bulls was a rough one with many obstacles along the way. But with her big “why” always in the forefront of her journey, Tia overcame incredible obstacles to become known as one of the most powerful dog rescuers of all time.

Because of Tia’s work, thousands of pit bulls destined to be throw-away dogs now live in loving homes. Her work not only saved these amazing creatures, but she has transformed the misunderstanding people had about pit bulls into love.

It is now easier to get the word out about what Tia and others like her are doing to make a difference in the world. There have been amazing advances in communication technology since the time when she first began her rescue mission.

Whatever your calling, what is your bigger “why?” Certainly there are times when things get really tough for Tia Torres and her pit bull rescue program. What allows her to stay the course is that her commitment is bigger than she is.

It’s the same with Vernon Davis. At times there are likely challenges he must overcome to stay the course. Yet, he does. And through Internet and social media marketing he has been able to raise awareness about the needs of talented inner-city artists in a much bigger way.

We are often led to believe that there should be no struggles, no hardships, no obstacles in pursuing our dreams. Give me a break! There will be times when things are a challenge, and it is often the challenges that inspire us in our true calling.
