Jesus Says, Have Faith

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 17:14-27. In this Scripture, when Jesus came to the multitude, there was a man there whose son was a lunatic. He brought him to the disciples, but they couldn’t heal him. Jesus rebuked the devil, and the child was healed. Why was Jesus able to heal the boy, but the disciples weren’t?

The disciples asked Jesus why they were unable to heal the child and Jesus told them that it was because of their lack of faith. He tells them if they have faith as small as the grain of a mustard seed then they could say to the mountain, “be moved” and it would be so. Jesus says that kind of faith only comes with prayer and fasting.

While they were in Galilee, Jesus tells them that He is going to be betrayed, killed, and on the third day will be raised again. The disciples were very sad.

When they came to Capernaum, the tax collectors asked Peter if Jesus paid taxes. Peter just says yes. Jesus asks Peter what he was thinking. Then Jesus tells him that, to keep from offending them, he could go fishing and the first fish he caught would have the money in his mouth to pay the taxes for Him and for Peter. I need to catch a few fish like that one. How about you?

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:
23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.
24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?
25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.
27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Things to think about:

Why were the disciples not able to heal the boy?

How much faith did Jesus tell them they needed?

What did Jesus say they could do if they had faith?

How is your faith in Jesus and God?

In what ways do you exercise your faith?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture that tells us if we have faith as a grain of mustard seed, we can say to the mountain, move from here to there; and it will move; and nothing will be impossible. Help us Lord, to have enough faith in You that we would be able to pray and see You work in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Great is Thy Faith” (Matthew 15:21-39)

Great is Thy Faith

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 15:21-39. In this Scripture, Jesus departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, which is north of Israel. There was a Canaanite woman who came to Jesus telling Him her daughter was possessed with a devil. But Jesus didn’t answer her. Why did He not acknowledge this woman?

The disciples told Him to send her away because she was crying after them. Jesus told them He was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel. What did He mean by that statement? She was not going to take no for an answer. She knew Jesus was her only hope. She worshiped Him, and begged Him to help her.

Jesus said to her, “It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.” She answered Him, saying, “Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” Jesus finally acknowledged her, stating that her faith was great and her will would be done.

Then Jesus went by the Sea of Galilee, up into a mountain and sat down. Multitudes of people followed Him there and brought people with all sorts of illnesses and Jesus healed them.

The people had been there with Jesus for three days fasting, and He didn’t want to send them away hungry. So Jesus asked the disciples what they had to give the people to eat. The disciples told Jesus they only had seven loaves of bread and a few fishes.

Jesus instructed the people to sit down. He gave thanks for the food, and gave it to His disciples to distribute to the people. There were four thousand men plus the women and children. When they finished eating, they took up the leftovers and there was seven baskets-full left. Jesus then sent the multitude away and went by ship to the coast of Magdala.

There are two things we can learn from this Scripture. One, is nothing is impossible with God if we turn our problems over to Him and have faith enough to believe He can solve them. The other is, if we bring what we have and present it to God for His use, no matter how small it may seem He can do much more with it than we can even imagine.

21 Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.

30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:
31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.
33 And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.
36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.
38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

Things to think about:

Have you ever been in a situation where you knew God was the only one who could help you, as the Canaanite woman did?

What did you do?

Do you find it amazing how Jesus took the little bit of food that the disciples had and fed so many with it?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture which tells us about the way Jesus went about healing people and feeding the multitudes. We see through this Scripture that if we have faith enough to believe, there is nothing impossible with God. As we study Your Word and see all the miracles Jesus performed, help our faith and belief to continue to grow in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear My Voice, O God” (Psalm 64:1-10)

Hear My Voice, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 64:1-10. Psalm 64 is a Psalm of David, to the Chief Musician. David cries out to God to hear his prayer and save his life from fear of the enemy. He asks God to hide him from the lies of the wicked.

David was constantly praying to God for protection from his enemies. David put his faith and hope in God. Do you put your faith and hope in God, as David did?

The wicked get together secretly and conspire to destroy others. They may use such tactics as lies, wickedness, greed, or pure meanness. They may conspire in secret, but God is all-knowing. They can’t hide from Him.

God knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts. If we put our hope in other things, they will fail us; only God will protect us to the end.

David set the example by showing us how he talked to God. He poured his heart out to God. He talked to God about whatever was troubling him at the time.

David didn’t try to handle his problems on his own. He leaned on God for help, support, and protection. David knew that as long as he had God on his side he could win the battle.

Even Jesus, when He was facing the enemy, cried out to God for help. Don’t think you have to handle your problems on your own. God loves you and cares for you.

God cares about what you are going through. Turn your life over to Him and ask for His help. God is available day or night to hear your cries. He’s waiting for you to call out to Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 64:1-10

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

Things to think about:

How much time do you spend daily going to God in prayer?
How can you put your trust in God to protect you from the enemy?
In what ways do you praise God for all He does for you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 64. David shows us that he depends on You to protect him and keep him from the enemy. You are a righteous God, so You won’t tolerate the wickedness of the unrighteous. David communicates with You through prayer. Help us to remember to bring our cares and concerns to You in prayer. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Perfecting your Faith” (1 Thessalonians 3:1-13)

Perfecting your Faith

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13. Paul writes in his letter to the Thessalonians that he couldn’t stand it any longer, not knowing how they were doing on their faith journey. Therefore, he sent Timothy to establish and reassure them in their faith. This meant that Paul would be alone in Athens, but he was willing to make the sacrifice for the sake of the Thessalonians. Why do you think Paul was willing to make such sacrifices for them?

Paul didn’t want the Thessalonians to be discouraged in their faith because of their current circumstances. He had told them when he was there that they would suffer persecution and they had. Paul didn’t want the work they’d done there previously to be in vain.

We all go through trials and tribulations in our lives. If we don’t have a firm foundation of our faith, sometimes these trials can cause us to lose faith. Paul had tribulations, Jesus was tempted, and we will suffer trials. Don’t let any trouble that comes your way cause you to lose faith and trust in God. He loves you, and in spite of what the circumstances say, He wants the best for you. You are His beloved child.

This Scripture in Acts indicates that Paul was distressed because of his concern for the Thessalonians. Acts 18:5 says, “And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.” Once Timothy returned from his visit to the Thessalonians and gave Paul a good report of their faith and charity, Paul was comforted.

Paul thanked God for the Thessalonians; they made Paul joyful because of their stand for God. He longed to see them so much that he prayed night and day that God might allow him to go back and minister to them.

Paul wanted to help them perfect their faith. He asked God to direct his way back to spend time with them. His desire for the Thessalonians was that they would grow in their love for others as much as he loved them. Paul’s aspiration for them was they would be established in their faith and faultless in godliness before God at the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 3:1-13

1 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:

3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

Why did Paul send Timothy to visit the Thessalonians?

What was Paul’s concern for the Thessalonians?

How can we perfect our faith?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. We see Paul’s great love and concern for the Thessalonians. Help us to have that kind of love and concern for the people we lead to You. We see the Thessalonians’ great faith and love for others and for Paul and his ministry. Help us to be supportive of others who are spreading the gospel. Help us all to be rooted and grounded in our faith so when trouble comes we won’t be shaken. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Faith-Love-Hope” (1 Thessalonians 1:1-10)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10. This letter wasn’t only from Paul, but also from Silvanus, who was known as Silas; and Timotheus, who was known as Timothy. Paul wrote this letter to the church of the Thessalonians. It is believed to be Paul’s first letter thought to have been written around 52 AD from Athens.

Paul starts the letter as he did many of his other letters by offering the blessing of grace and peace to them from God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. He tells them that he always thanks God for them and prays for them.

He established the church of Thessalonica on his second missionary journey. Paul tells them that he remembers their work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in Jesus Christ and in God the Father. God didn’t only love the Thessalonians, He chose them.

Paul reminds them that the gospel not only came to them by word, but by power, in the Holy Ghost, and in assurance. Paul and Silas set the example before them. The Thessalonians became followers of Paul and Silas, but more importantly, they became followers of Jesus Christ. They received the Word of the Lord that Paul preached to them with joy through the Holy Ghost.

Paul tells them that they were examples to all those who believed; those who live in Macedonia and Achaia. The word of the Thessalonians’ great faith in God and in Jesus Christ spread all over. Their testimony showed Paul what an influence he and Silas had on the Thessalonians, even though the two of them were only there for a short time. The Thessalonians turned away from serving their idols and turned to serving God. Paul knew of the Thessalonians’ anticipation in waiting for the return of Jesus Christ, who delivered them from wrath.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;

3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:

7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Things to think about:

What does faith, hope and love for God through His Son Jesus, mean to you? Have you found it?

What was the testimony of the Thessalonians?

How can we share our testimony with others?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. We see Paul’s love for the people and their great love and devotion to You. Help us to have the kind of testimony that Paul says the Thessalonians had when he said their faith in God had spread abroad. Give us the kind of faith, love, and hope that they had. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
