Daily Bible Reading “You Are My Refuge” (Psalm 142:1-7)

You Are My Refuge

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 142:1-7. Psalm 142 is a Psalm of David, a prayer of contemplation when he was hiding in a cave. David poured out his heart to the LORD. He was overwhelmed by the trouble he was going through.

David declared that the LORD was his refuge. David wanted the LORD to comfort his spirit and deliver him from his prosecutors. His enemies were stronger than he was and no doubt there were many of them. He begs the LORD to bring his spirit out of bondage, so he could praise the LORD. Have you ever felt like your spirit was in bondage?

David’s enemies were hunting him down and he was hiding in a cave. David turned his heart toward God and cried out to Him. He knew God was the only one who could deliver him from his enemies. David was in a desperate situation. Have you ever been in a situation where you knew God was the only answer to your problem?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 142:1-7

1 [[Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave.]] I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.
2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.
3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
5 I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
6 Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.
7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

Things to think about:

  • Can you imagine having to hide in a cave like David did? How would you survive?
  • In what ways do you turn to God when you are afraid or you have trouble in your life?
  • Have you ever noticed in times of trouble you feel closer to God? If so, in what ways?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 142 where we see that David turned to You in his time of trouble. When he was afraid and being hunted he called on You to deliver him. Help us to bring our cares and concerns to You. Help us to lean on You in our times of trouble. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

About the book:

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 by Deborah H. Bateman is the 30th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book contains approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 has already been published in a book called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
