Daily Bible Reading “Deliver Yourself” (Proverbs 6:1-5)

Deliver Yourself

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 6:1-5. In this Scripture, Solomon warns his son about putting up security for a friend’s debt or signing for the debt of a stranger.

He warns him about being trapped by the words of his mouth or by an agreement that he made.

He tells him to follow his advice and don’t even sleep until he has freed himself from this snare. He instructs him to go to his friend and beg if he has to in order to get his name off of the agreement and be released from this burden.

He tells him to go and deliver himself like a gazelle from the hands of a hunter or a bird from the hand of a trapper.

Sometimes we do things to try to help others, but at the same time we endanger ourselves. With all good intentions we put our name on a debt of a friend or a stranger trying to help them out, but what we have to realize is if that person doesn’t pay the debt and our name is on it we are responsible for it.

Solomon warns his son about getting trapped in this situation. He tells him if he has already gotten trapped to go and free himself immediately and not to go to sleep until the issue is resolved. In other words take care of it today and don’t wait another minute. We do not need to be responsible for another person’s debt.

Most of us have enough of our own debt to take care of without taking on other people’s debt. Not only will you be responsible for the debt, but it will also probably damage your relationship with that person when you realize you can’t trust them to stand behind their word. Have you ever been caught in this snare?

Jesus paid a debt for us on the cross that we could never pay. He gave His life to cover the debt of our sins. Have you accepted His glorious gift of salvation?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 6:1-5

1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Things to think about:

  • What is Solomon warning his son about in this Scripture?
  • How does he tell him to handle the situation?
  • To what does he compare being caught in this situation?
  • Why do we not want to put our name on another person’s debt?
  • Have you ever been caught in this snare? If so, how did you release yourself?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that Solomon warns his son about signing for another person’s debt. Help us to realize the dangers that we place ourselves in when we put our name on the debt of someone else. Help us to guard against being caught in this snare. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
