Daily Bible Reading “A Wise Son Makes a Glad Father” (Proverbs 10:1-8)

A Wise Son Makes a Glad Father

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 10:1-8. In this Scripture, we are reminded that this is the proverbs of Solomon. Solomon says, “A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish son is the sorrow of his mother. Treasures of wickedness will profit you nothing: but righteousness delivers from death.”

The LORD will not allow the soul of the righteous person to be hungry: but he casts away the desire of the wicked one.

Those who deal with a deceitful hand become poor: but the hand of the diligent person prospers.

A wise son gathers in summer: but one who sleeps during harvest causes shame.

Blessings are bestowed on the head of the righteous: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

The memory of the just person is blessed: but the name of the wicked person will decompose. The wise person in heart will receive instructions: but a loud mouth fool will fall.

Notice how Solomon compares the wise person and the foolish person. The wise person receives the blessings of God and the foolish person falls into destruction.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 10:1-8

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

Things to think about:

  • What is the difference between a wise child and a foolish son or daughter?
  • Who is it that gathers in harvest?
  • What happens to those who are too lazy to gather in the time of harvest?
  • What are some of the other comparisons mentioned between the wise person and the foolish person?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture where Solomon compares a wise person with a wicked person help us to realize the difference. Help us to be wise and diligent. Help us not to be as those who are wicked. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Book of 1 Samuel: Prophets, Priests, and Kings

by Deborah H. Bateman

About the Book:

The Book of 1 Samuel: Prophets, Priests, and Kings by Deborah H. Bateman is a Daily Bible Reading Study of the book of 1 Samuel. This is the 31st book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of 1 Samuel is found in the Old Testament of the Bible.

The Book of 1 Samuel not only discusses the life and call on Samuel as prophet, but also includes events that happened during his lifetime. The people of Israel insisted on having a king and even though Samuel tried to warn them of the dangers of appointing a king, they insisted. So God chose Saul to be their king. A good portion of the book includes the events during the reign of King Saul including the ongoing rivalry between King Saul and David.

The Book of 1 Samuel: Prophets, Priests, and Kings contains 71 Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson consists of a commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scripture, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer to go along with the lesson. This Bible study is great as a personal daily devotional or a group Bible study.

For those of you interested in Bible journaling, we suggest you pick your favorite Bible verse from each lesson and journal about it. This will be a great reminder of the lessons you learn as you read and study this book.

Daily Bible Reading “Fear of the LORD” (Proverbs 9:7-12)

Fear of the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 9:7-12. In this Scripture, we are warned if we correct a scorner, we may be insulted in return. If we rebuke a wicked person, we may end up getting abused.

We are warned not to rebuke a mocker or they will hate you. But, when you reprimand a wise person, they will love you.

When you give instruction to a wise person, they will become even wiser. When you teach a virtuous person, they will grow in knowledge.

Proverbs 9:10 is one of my favorite verses, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Through wisdom your days will be multiplied, and the years of your life will be increased.

If you are wise, you will be rewarded for your wisdom: but if you are a scorner, you will suffer the consequences of it.

Notice in this Scripture how the wise person is able to take correction and even welcomes it. The Scripture goes as far as to say they not only appreciate the correction, but love the one who gives the correction.

However, the mocker rejects correction and turns against those who try to help them.

Even though it may be hard sometimes to take correction, if it is given in the right spirit, with a loving heart, it can be beneficial to us.

Do you find it hard to take correction? If so, how can we learn to be more open to rebuke and take the suggestions that others give us for our benefit rather than taking them as an insult?

Have you ever noticed that there are some people who are offended by any suggestion you may offer them? Then, there are some people who welcome your suggestions.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 9:7-12

7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

Things to think about:

  • What is the difference between a wise person and a scorner?
  • What is the difference in the way a wise person and a scorner respond to correction?
  • How will the wise person and the scorner be rewarded for their acts?

Prayer of the day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that a wise man takes correction, but a mocker does not. Help us to be wise and to be willing to be corrected for Your sake and for our own sake. Give us the wisdom that we need to withstand correction and to prosper from it. Help us not to take offense when someone tries to give us constructive criticism. Help us to be sure when we correct others to do it in a spirit of love and humility. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Wisdom has Built Her House” (Proverbs 9:1-6)

Wisdom has Built Her House

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 9:1-6. Wisdom has built her house she has carved out her seven pillars. She has killed her beasts; she has made her wine; she has also set her table.

She has sent out her maidens: she cries upon the highest places of the city. Once wisdom is prepared she spreads the word to let everyone know.

This reminds me of when I was a child and mama would get dinner ready she would call out, “Dinner is ready” for everybody to come and enjoy the meal she prepared. When she called us she wanted us to come right away. She didn’t want us to take our time getting there.

Whoever is simple, let him turn in here. As for him who wants understanding, she says to him, come; eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I’ve made.

Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Ezekiel 11:20 says, “That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”

Notice that Lady Wisdom is prepared. She has made everything ready to receive her guests. When opportunity knocks wisdom is ready to answer the call.

One of the most important ways we can prepare ourselves for the future is to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without Him we are headed for death and destruction. With Jesus Christ as our Savior we can look forward to His blessings in this life and the life to come.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 9:1-6

1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Things to think about:

  • What do we learn about wisdom in this Scripture?
  • What did Lady Wisdom do to prepare for her guests in this Scripture?
  • Once Lady Wisdom was prepared what did she do next?
  • For whom does Lady Wisdom call out?

Prayer of the day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Proverbs which shows us that those who are wise prepare themselves. When opportunity knocks they are ready. Help us to be like Lady Wisdom and prepare ourselves not only for this life, but for our future with You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Wisdom is a Gift from God” (Proverbs 8:22-31)

Wisdom is a Gift from God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 8:22-31. The LORD possessed me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was anointed from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth was created. When there were no watery depths, I was brought forth; when there were no oceans flowing with water.

Before the mountains were formed, even before the hills I was brought out: Before God made the earth, or the fields, or the highest part of the soil of the world.

When He created the clouds above: when He reinforced the fountains of the deep: When He gave the sea His declaration that the waters were not to pass the boundaries He commanded: when He created the foundations of the earth:

I was beside Him, as one who was brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him; Rejoicing in the inhabitable part of His earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

As I was reading this Scripture, I thought this sounds like Jesus. Then, I looked up the cross references and it brought up this Scripture from John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

According to this Scripture, even though Jesus wasn’t born into the world yet as we know it; He was still with God and a part of God’s plan to save the world.

This Scripture tells us that He was with God before God even created the world. He was part of God’s plan from the beginning. At the proper time God anointed Jesus to be born into this world so that He could become the Savior of the people of this world.

That is true wisdom from above, the wisdom of God to create the world and humanity and then to have a plan to save the world from their sins.

In this Scripture, we learn that wisdom is a gift from God, like salvation is a gift from God.

I love this quote from John Piper, “The wisdom of God devised a way for the love of God to deliver sinners from the wrath of God while not compromising the righteousness of God.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 8:22-31

22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Things to think about:

  • What do we learn about wisdom in this Scripture?
  • From where does true wisdom come?
  • When was Jesus anointed?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we are told that Jesus was with you from the beginning of time. We thank You for giving Your precious Son, who loved us and gave His life to save us from our sins. Help us to seek Him and to seek Your wisdom, true wisdom. Help us not to only rely on the wisdom of men, but to constantly seek wisdom from above. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You and thank You for all Your many blessings. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Am Wisdom” (Proverbs 8:12-21)

Proverbs 8 fear-the-lordI Am Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 8:12-21. Solomon describes wisdom in this Scripture. He tells us what wisdom is and the value of finding wisdom. I wisdom abide with caution, and find out knowledge of clever creations. The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: I hate pride, and arrogance, evil ways, and the perverse mouth.

Counsel and sound wisdom are mine: I am understanding; I have strength. By me kings, princes, nobles and all the judges of the earth rule and reign, and princes decree justice.

I love those who love me. Those who seek me early will find me. Riches and honor are with me; durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold; and my profits than choice silver.

I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: That I may cause those who love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

One of my favorite prayers is the Serenity Prayer. It is a prayer I repeated over and over to myself at difficult times in my life. There were times when life was so hard I didn’t know if I could make it through. This prayer spoke for me.

There were times in my life when my heart was so broken I didn’t feel like I could pray for myself, I remember repeating the words of this prayer and it encouraged me to keep going when I felt like giving up.

At that time, I didn’t know the whole prayer, I only recited the first four lines over and over, but it was exactly what I needed during some extremely difficult times of my life. I share the words of this prayer here to encourage you that when life seems impossible to get through God can find a way to encourage you and help you get through those difficult times and bring you out on the other side. As hard as it is to understand sometimes, everything in our life happens for a reason.

You have to cling to God and ask Him to give you strength and the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to do the right things when life is so hard you don’t know what to do. He may not remove the circumstances from your life. But, He will give you the strength you need to get through the situation and you will be stronger on the other side of it.

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

– Reinhold Niebuhr

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 8:12-21

12 I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

Things to think about:

  • What does it mean to fear the LORD?
  •  What are some of the things we learn about wisdom in this Scripture?
  • From where do you feel you have obtained the most wisdom in your life thus far?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture and think about what Solomon shares about wisdom we see that he says to fear the LORD is to hate evil. Help us to remove every evil way from our lives. Remove pride, arrogance and any evil speech from our lives. Help us to live righteously before You. Forgive us of the times we have failed You. Give us wisdom to live the way You would have us to and strength to endure the race that You have set before us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
