Daily Bible Reading “Kiss the Son” (Psalm 2:1-12)

Kiss the Son

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 2:1-12. The Psalmist tells us to “Kiss the Son.” But first he asks the question, “Why do the heathen rage.” This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm, which means it talks about Jesus. Acts 4:25 gives us a clue that David is the writer of this Psalm, Acts 4:25, “Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?” It asks the same question that is asked in Psalm 2:1.

The Psalmist says the kings and rulers of this world come together to take issue against God and His Son, Jesus. God laughs in the heavens at their foolishness. He warns them with His wrath. Some people don’t get the message.

There are many Scriptures in the Bible that refer to this Psalm. One of them is Acts 13:33, “God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.” It even mentions the second psalm in the Scripture.

Psalm 2:10-12, the Holy Spirit exhorts the kings and rulers of this world to serve the LORD with fear and trembling. He speaks saying, “Kiss the Son.” He admonishes them to accept Jesus as their Savior and worship Him lest they cause Him to be angered against them and they perish. We are reminded those who trust in the LORD are blessed.

What would the world be like today if the leaders of this world served the LORD?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 2:1-12

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

What will happen to those who put their trust in the LORD?

Have you put your trust in the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who You sacrificed for our sins. Help us to love and worship Him. Help the rulers of this world to serve You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “Praise the Father, Praise the Son” (Psalm 111:1-10)

Praise the Father, Praise the Son

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 111:1-10. The Psalmist declares he’ll praise the LORD in the congregation. He professes the works of the LORD are great, honorable, and glorious. The righteousness of the LORD endures forever. God made His wonderful works to be remembered.

How can we step outside, look at the sky, the sun, the moon, the grass, the trees, the ocean, the mountains, the birds, and every living creature and not remember the works of the LORD? His creation is all around us. It’s beautiful and majestic.

The LORD is gracious and compassionate. God made a covenant with His people and He will stand by that covenant forever. He sent redemption to the world through His Son, Jesus Christ.

I love verse ten, which says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” What does it mean to fear the LORD? Perhaps it means to respect, show reverence toward Him, and be in awe of Him. He is holy and worthy to be praised.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 111:1-10

1 Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.
2 The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3 His work is honourable and glorious: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant.
6 He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Things to think about:

When you look around at God’s creation what are you most in awe of?
What was God’s covenant to His people?
What does the Scripture say is the beginning of wisdom?
In what ways do you consider yourself to be wise?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 111 where the Psalmist reminds us of how awesome You are. He reminds us of Your wondrous works and Your gift of salvation to man. Help us to revere You and stand in awe of Your creation and Your wondrous works. Help us to love You for who You are and not only for what You do for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “A Wise Son Makes a Glad Father” (Proverbs 10:1-8)

A Wise Son Makes a Glad Father

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 10:1-8. In this Scripture, we are reminded that this is the proverbs of Solomon. Solomon says, “A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish son is the sorrow of his mother. Treasures of wickedness will profit you nothing: but righteousness delivers from death.”

The LORD will not allow the soul of the righteous person to be hungry: but he casts away the desire of the wicked one.

Those who deal with a deceitful hand become poor: but the hand of the diligent person prospers.

A wise son gathers in summer: but one who sleeps during harvest causes shame.

Blessings are bestowed on the head of the righteous: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

The memory of the just person is blessed: but the name of the wicked person will decompose. The wise person in heart will receive instructions: but a loud mouth fool will fall.

Notice how Solomon compares the wise person and the foolish person. The wise person receives the blessings of God and the foolish person falls into destruction.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 10:1-8

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

Things to think about:

What is the difference between a wise child and a foolish son or daughter?
Who is it that gathers in harvest?
What happens to those who are too lazy to gather in the time of harvest?
What are some of the other comparisons mentioned between the wise person and the foolish person?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture where Solomon compares a wise person with a wicked person help us to realize the difference. Help us to be wise and diligent. Help us not to be as those who are wicked. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
