Daily Bible Reading “LORD, Remember David” (Psalm 132:1-10)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 132:1-10. Psalm 132 is a song of degrees where the Psalmist cries out the LORD to remember David and all his afflictions. He reminds God of David’s vow to Him. A vow is a promise. Have you ever made a vow to God? It has been said that is better not to make a vow than to make it and break it.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 tells us, “When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee. That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.”

David made a vow to build a tabernacle for the LORD. He was so determined to find a place to build the tabernacle that he swore he wouldn’t sleep until he found a place for God’s dwelling place.

The Psalmist declares that the people will worship God. He cries out to God to arise. He cries out to the priests to be clothed in righteousness and the saints to shout for joy. He begs the LORD not to turn His face away or take His presence from them, for David’s sake.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 132:1-10

1 A Song of degrees. LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:
2 How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
5 Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
6 Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.
7 We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.
8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.
9 Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.
10 For thy servant David’s sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever made a vow to God? If so, when and what was your vow?
  • David was determined to keep his vow. In what ways are you determined to keep your promises to God?
  • Have you ever prayed to God and asked Him not to turn His face away from you? If so, when?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 132. We thank You for the testimony of David and how he was dedicated and determined to keep his vow to You to build a tabernacle. Help us to have this same kind of determination to keep our promises to You. Let Your love shine on us. Please help us not to do anything to cause You to turn Your face from us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “David Finds Peace in the LORD” (Psalm 131:1-3)

David Finds Peace in the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 131:1-3. Psalm 131 is a song of degrees of David. This is one of the shortest Psalms with only three verses. David humbles himself before the LORD saying his heart is not arrogant or his eyes prideful, nor does he exalt himself in matters that are too great for him. David was a king. He was a powerful man by the world’s standards, but he knew his limitations. He relied on God to be his protector and provider.

Proverbs 8:13 tells us, “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”

Proverbs 13:10 reminds us, “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”

Proverbs 29:23 says, “A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.”

David humbled himself before God as a child who is weaned of its mother and finds comfort in her arms. David finds peace and rest in the heavenly Father’s presence. He declares that Israel should find hope in the LORD forever.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 131:1-3

1 [[A Song of degrees of David.]] LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you think of yourself as being haughty?
  • Do you find your eyes to be lofty or prideful?
  • In what ways have you found peace in serving the LORD?
  • Do you concern yourself with matters higher than you?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 131 where David acknowledges that he has found rest in You. Help us to find peace and rest in Your presence. Help us not to seek things that are higher than us or are worldly, but to seek the things of the LORD in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Out of the Depths” (Psalm 130:1-8)

Out of the Depths

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 130:1-8. Psalm 130 is another of the songs of degrees, which the children of Israel sang on their way to Jerusalem. The Psalmist cries out for the LORD to hear and answer his prayers. He questions the LORD: if He should punish all who have sinned who would be left standing?

As the Psalmist mentions, let us thank God for His forgiveness. Forgiveness is a great gift given to those who don’t deserve it. It is impossible for us to earn our way to heaven. God offers us the gift of forgiveness of our sins through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is only through His grace and mercy that we can receive forgiveness of our sins. Have you accepted Christ as your Savior and received the gift of forgiveness?

The Psalmist tells us that he waits on the LORD, because his hope is in the word of the LORD. He declares that his soul waits on the LORD more than those who watch and wait for morning. Have you ever stayed up all night and it seemed like forever until morning came? There is something about the sunrise of a new day that brings us hope. The Psalmist exhorts Israel to find their hope in the LORD because He is merciful and will redeem them from their sins.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 130:1-8

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you ask God to hear and answer your prayers?
  • Have you found forgiveness for your sins through the LORD?
  • In what ways do you find hope in the LORD?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 130 where the Psalmist calls out for You to hear and answer his prayers. We thank You for the privilege of being able to bring our petitions to You in prayer. Help us to fellowship with You through prayer on a daily basis. Thank You for Your mercy toward us and for Your forgiveness of our sins. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Chose the Tribe of Judah” (Psalm 78:63-72)

God Chose the Tribe of Judah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:63-72. In this portion of Psalm 78, Asaph tells us that God chose the tribe of Judah because the tribe of Ephraim rebelled. Who was the tribe of Judah? Why were they significant to God?

God poured out His wrath on the tribe of Ephraim. The young men were consumed with fire, and because of this the maidens were unable to marry. Even the priests indulged in sin and fell by the sword, and the widows didn’t weep over their loss.

God built His tabernacle in Zion. He took David from the sheepfold and chose him to be a servant of God. David was crowned king and was put in charge of leading the people of Israel. In this Scripture we see how people’s choices can cause them either to be lifted up by God or to be destroyed because of their rebellion against God.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:63-72

63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

 

Things to think about:

  • Why was the tribe of Ephraim not chosen by God?
  • Why was the tribe of Judah chosen by God?
  • In this Scripture, who did God choose to lead His people?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 78. In this Scripture we see where You lifted some up because of their obedience, and caused some to fall because of their rebellion against You. Help us to be obedient children of God. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Israel Provoked God to Anger” (Psalm 78:53-62)

Israel Provoked God to Anger

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 78:53-62. In this Scripture, we are told that God led the children of Israel to safety, when He divided the Red Sea and the sea overtook their enemies.

God brought them to His sanctuary. He cast out the heathen from them and set up the tribes of Israel in their tents.

God did all this for them, but they didn’t keep His testimonies and provoked Him to anger. Do we ever do the same thing by turning our backs on God after all the blessings He has given us?

They turned away from God and were unfaithful to Him like their fathers were. They provoked God to anger with the high places they built for the other gods. The children of Israel caused God to be jealous because of their worship of images that they carved from stone.

God was so angry with Israel that He forsook the tabernacle at Shiloh and delivered them into the hands of the enemy. We don’t ever want to be in this position with God.

“Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; (For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 6:14-15).

“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14).

Exodus 20:1-6 says, “And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. “

All these Scriptures show us the character of God, that He is a jealous God and wants us to serve Him only. He is not willing to share our love and affection with other gods. He loves His children and shows mercy to those who love Him and serve Him with their whole heart.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 78:53-62

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.
55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

 

Things to think about:

  • What does it mean to be jealous?
  • Did you realize God was a jealous God?
  • How do we put other things ahead of God?
  • How can we put God first in our lives?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please help us to realize as we read this Scripture in Psalm 78 that You are a jealous God and You don’t want us to put anything or anyone above You. Help us not to worship other things in our lives, but to serve You only. Help us to love You and worship You in a way that is pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
