Daily Bible Reading “Truly God is Good to Israel” (Psalm 73:1-14)

Truly God is Good to Israel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 73:1-14. Psalm 73 is a Psalm of Asaph. There are twelve psalms that are attributed to Asaph (Psalm 50; 73-83). Asaph is believed to be a Levite who was appointed by David to be the chief of the temple singers. In 1 Chronicles 6:39 we are told that Asaph was the son of Berachiah, the son of Shimea.

We are told in 1 Chronicles 6:31-32, “And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest. And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order.”

Some biblical scholars question whether Asaph was actually the author or if he transcribed these psalms for David. Some even believe that some of the psalms may have been written by Asaph’s descendants.

The Psalmist was disturbed. He knows that God is a good God to the righteous. He has become discouraged in his walk with the Lord. He looks around and sees the wicked prospering. Have you ever felt like this Psalmist did?

Sometimes it seems like the wicked prosper and are successful. They may seem not to have any trouble in their lives, so they become prideful. They may be violent, corrupt, and tell lies, yet they seem to be successful.

The wicked conduct themselves in ungodly ways, but they obtain wealth. The Psalmist is discouraged because of this situation. It may discourage you as well if you compare your life to people like this. Their evil ways will eventually catch up to them.

We have to remember this life is not the only thing we have to look forward to. As believers, we have the promise of the life to come. We have to hold on to the promises of God for the future.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 73:1-14

1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]] Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14 For all the day long have I been plagued and chastened every morning.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you compare yourself to others?
  • How does it make you feel when you compare yourself to other people?
  • In what ways have you noticed the wicked prospering?
  • How can we trust God despite what we see going on around us?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 73. We can relate to the Psalmist, as we often look around and see the same things happening in the world today. We wonder how this could be. As children of God, we compare ourselves to the ungodly and sometimes wonder how these things happen. Help us to realize You have great things planned for us in the future. Help us not to compare ourselves to unbelievers and question You and Your ways. Help us to trust You completely. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD God of Israel” (Psalm 72:13-20)

Blessed Be the LORD God of Israel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 72:13-20. David continues talking about Christ sparing the needy and redeeming their souls from deceit and violence. He says, “Precious will their blood be in His sight.” Why can He say this? I believe it is because their sins have been forgiven and their blood has been cleansed by the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ.

Prayers will be made to Jesus continually and He will be praised daily. There will be plenty of food to eat. The people will flourish like the grass. His name will endure forever. All of the nations will call Him blessed. Blessed is the name of the LORD. The whole earth will be filled with His glory. Verse 20 tells us this is the end of the prayers of David, the son of Jesse.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 72:13-20

13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you look forward to Jesus coming back?
  • In what ways do you imagine believers will celebrate when Jesus returns?
  • What are some of the things we can look forward to at Jesus’ coming?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 72. We see that David looked forward to the coming of the Lord as we do today. Help us to continually watch and pray for His coming. We ask that Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give the King Thy Judgments” (Psalm 72:1-12)

Give the King Thy Judgments

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 72:1-12. Psalm 72 is a Psalm for Solomon, which is thought to be written by David for his son. He asks God to give the king justice, righteousness, and peace with the people. This Scripture is also compared to the reign of Jesus Christ. He will judge the people with righteousness.

All nations will bow down and serve him. He will help the poor and needy. He will come down from heaven like the rain. The kings from every nation will bring gifts to him. He will rule and reign forever.

David had all these thoughts and prayers for his son. I believe, as David did, that our prayers can make a difference in the lives of our young people. I pray for my children and grandchildren every day. I ask God to watch over them and protect them. I also ask Him to lead, guide, and direct in their lives. In what ways do you pray for the younger generation in your life?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 72:1-12

1 [[[A Psalm] for Solomon.]] Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.
2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
4 He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.
8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

 

Things to think about:

  • How can we prepare for Jesus’ coming?
  • How does it make you feel when you read “all nations will bow to Him”?
  • In what ways do you fear the Lord?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 72. In this Scripture we are reminded that Jesus will come again to rule and reign on the earth. Help us to prepare our hearts and lives for His coming. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Strength of the LORD” (Psalm 71:13-24)

The Strength of the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 71:13-24. The Psalmist is pleading to God to cause all sorts of calamities to come on his enemies. He declares that he will praise and worship God for his righteousness. He says he will continue in the strength of the LORD.

The Psalmist says God has taught him from his youth and he has declared God’s wondrous works ever since. Have you come to know the LORD? If so, what age were you when you came to know the LORD? I was raised in church since I was a baby and was baptized as a girl, but didn’t remember the actual conversion experience. So at the age of fifteen I surrendered my life to God and was baptized again.

The Psalmist tells us he is old and gray-headed now and asks God not to forsake him in his old age. His desire is to declare God’s works to that generation and to everyone who is to come. I imagine he never thought we would be reading his words today and be encouraged to praise and serve God through them.

He promises to praise God and sing to Him with his harp. He says he will speak of God’s righteousness all day because his enemies have been brought to shame. Have you ever prayed for those who’ve mistreated you? We’d be better off letting God handle our troubles than trying to handle them on our own.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 71:13-24

13 Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.
14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
15 My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.
16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
17 O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
21 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
22 I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.

  • How should we respond to those who mistreat us?
  • How do you find strength in the LORD?
  • In what ways do you enjoy praising the LORD?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 71. We see how the Psalmist prayed for his enemies and continued to praise You even though he was troubled. Help us to praise You in spite of our troubles. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Trust In the Lord” (Psalm 71:1-12)

Trust In the Lord

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 71:1-12. The Psalmist begins this Psalm saying, “In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust.” He asks God to deliver him from the hand of the wicked. He says, God is his hope and has been his trust since he was young.

He declares that God is his refuge. He asks God to help fill his mouth with praise for God. Notice this Psalm is written when the author is older, because he says, “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.”

He also said in verse one, “don’t let me be put to confusion.” Sometimes, as people get older, they get confused and don’t know what to expect. The Psalmist was asking God to keep him strong in his faith even as he grew older, and help him to always praise God for everything. What is your prayer for your old age? One of my prayers would be to be healthy and the other is that I would remain faithful to Him all the days of my life.

Proverbs 3:5 tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” We need to put our past, present, and future in the hands of God and trust Him to direct our paths. We don’t know what the future holds, but when we put our faith in God, we know who holds the future and we can have peace about it.

The Psalmist cries out to God to protect him and deliver him from his enemies who are still seeking to destroy him. He sounds desperate because he asks God to make haste to help him. Have you ever felt desperate for God’s help?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 71:1-12

1 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
2 Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
5 For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.
6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.
7 I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
8 Let my mouth be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
9 Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
10 For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
11 Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.
12 O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.

 

Things to think about:

  • Are you in a relationship with God?
  • If so, how long have you trusted in God?
  • What is your greatest desire as you grow older?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 71. We see through this Scripture that the Psalmist was getting older and still wanted and needed Your help. His desire was to praise and worship You all the days of his life. Help us to follow his lead in continuing to worship and praise You as we grow older. Help us not to grow weary in the battle against the enemy. Give us strength to continue for You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
