Revive Us Again

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 85:1-13. Psalm 85 is written to the Chief Musician. It is a Psalm for the sons of Korah. The Psalmist starts by thanking the LORD for showing favor to His land and bringing back the captivity of Jacob. He acknowledges that God had forgiven the sins of His people.

He is thankful that God has taken away His rage against them and turned away from His burning anger. He begs God to turn the people back to Him and cause His anger to cease toward them.

He asks God, “Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger against all generations? Will you not revive us: so your people may rejoice in you again?”
He begs God to show His mercy toward the people and grant His salvation to them. He says he will listen to what the LORD says. He has confidence that the LORD will speak peace to His people, and His saints. But don’t let them turn again to their foolish ways.

The Psalmist states, “Surely the salvation of the LORD is near to those who fear Him; so glory may abide in our land.”

Verse10 is one of my favorite Scriptures in this chapter, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”

The Psalmist was confident that truth would spring out of the earth; and righteousness would look down from heaven. He felt sure that the LORD would give them that which was good; and their land would yield its increase.
The Psalmist declares that righteousness would go before the LORD; and would put them in the path of His steps.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 85:1-13

1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.
8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

Things to think about:

• Have you ever felt like God was angry with you? If so, when?
• In what ways have you sinned against God?
• How can we find forgiveness and restoration when we rebel against God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 85. Help us to see that You are a forgiving God. Help us to realize that You love us. Help us to also know that it grieves You when we sin against You. Forgive us of all our sins and help us to always live in a way that is pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day.
