God is My King

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 74:1-12. Psalm 74 is a Psalm of Asaph. He cried out to God for help. He asked God why He was angry. He begged God to remember His people. Have you ever felt like God was angry with you?

This psalm refers to the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldean army. The sanctuary was destroyed and burned to the ground. They burned all the synagogues in the land. This incident is also referred to in 2 Chronicles 36:19, “And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.” Asaph asked God how long he would let the enemy attack His people. Have you ever felt like God removed His hand of protection from you?

Sometimes things happen in life and we don’t understand why or how God could let something like that happen. Sometimes we question God like the Psalmist did in this Scripture. Asaph couldn’t understand why God didn’t stop the enemy from destroying the temple. Sometimes we wonder if God is mad at us as the Psalmist in this Scripture did. We don’t understand the sovereign will of God. We have to trust Him.

Even today there are still those who seek to destroy God’s people. There are wars and rumors of wars going on all the time like the Bible said there would be in Matthew 24:6. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all live in peace? If we look at the circumstances around us sometimes it will cause us to doubt God, but we have to focus not on the circumstances, but on God and how powerful He is.

This is what the Psalmist reminds us at the end of this lesson when he says, “For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” Even though we might not understand everything God does or allows to happen, He is working all things together for our good and His glory (see Romans 8:28).

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 74:1-12

1 [[Maschil of Asaph.]] O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.
5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
7 They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.
8 They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
9 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
11 Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.
12 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

Things to think about:

• What in your life has caused you to question God?
• In what ways have you felt deserted by God?
• What do you hold onto when you feel like God has deserted you?
• Have you accepted God as your King through His Son, Jesus Christ?
• How can we reassure ourselves that God is always there for us and He cares what we are going through?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 74. Thank You that the Psalmist reminds us that even when things aren’t looking good we can still have faith and trust in You. Help us to keep our eyes on You and Your abilities and not our circumstances. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.
