This is My Resting Place Forever

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 132:11-18. In the second half of Psalm 132, a Song of degrees, the Psalmist tells us that the LORD swore to David and He would not go back on His promises. He made a promise that if his children would keep God’s covenants their children would sit on the throne as well.

This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm. God chose Zion to be His habitation, His dwelling place, His place of rest. He promised to bless Zion with provision and take care of the poor and needy of the land.

He declared that He would clothe the priests with salvation and the saints would shout for joy. He proclaimed that there He would make the horn of David to bud; in other words, he would cause the power of David to increase. He has ordained a lamp for His anointed one to lead, guide, and direct him. He will be a light for God’s people. His enemies will be brought to shame, but his kingdom will flourish.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 132:11-18

11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.
13 For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation.
14 This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.
15 I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16 I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
17 There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.
18 His enemies will I clothe with shame: but upon himself shall his crown flourish.

Things to think about:

What was the promise God made to David? What were the conditions of His promise?
In this Scripture, where are we told is God’s habitation? Is that the only place God lives?
What does it mean when the Scripture says He will make the horn of David to bud?
What does all of this mean to us today?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 132 where we are reminded of the promise You made to David. Help us to honor Your Word and Your promises. Give us the faith we need to stand on those promises. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 by Deborah H. Bateman is 30th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book contains approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 was published in a book called Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

LORD, Remember David

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 132:1-10. Psalm 132 is a song of degrees where the Psalmist cries out the LORD to remember David and all his afflictions. He reminds God of David’s vow to Him. A vow is a promise. Have you ever made a vow to God? It has been said that is better not to make a vow than to make it and break it.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 tells us, “When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee. That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.”

David made a vow to build a tabernacle for the LORD. He was so determined to find a place to build the tabernacle that he swore he wouldn’t sleep until he found a place for God’s dwelling place.

The Psalmist declares that the people will worship God. He cries out to God to arise. He cries out to the priests to be clothed in righteousness and the saints to shout for joy. He begs the LORD not to turn His face away or take His presence from them, for David’s sake.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 132:1-10

1 A Song of degrees. LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:
2 How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
5 Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
6 Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.
7 We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.
8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.
9 Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; and let thy saints shout for joy.
10 For thy servant David’s sake turn not away the face of thine anointed.

Things to think about:

Have you ever made a vow to God? If so, when and what was your vow?
David was determined to keep his vow. In what ways are you determined to keep your promises to God?
Have you ever prayed to God and asked Him not to turn His face away from you? If so, when?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 132. We thank You for the testimony of David and how he was dedicated and determined to keep his vow to You to build a tabernacle. Help us to have this same kind of determination to keep our promises to You. Let Your love shine on us. Please help us not to do anything to cause You to turn Your face from us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
