This Life is Fleeting

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 49:11-20. The psalmist reminds us that the houses and lands that we have in this life will be left behind. Even men of honor who name buildings, streets, and other things after themselves, they too will eventually perish and leave all their wealth and fame behind.

Only the soul which is redeemed by God will live eternally. This mortal body that we live in today will perish when we pass from this life. That will be the end of life as we know it and we can’t carry any of the things we have accumulated in this life with us. If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior even your soul will perish.

Sometimes we work so hard in this life to obtain wealth and make a name for ourselves and don’t concern ourselves with the life that is eternal. This Scripture reminds us that all these earthly things will pass away and only the things that are eternal will last.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (John 10:27-28).

Sometimes we focus on the accomplishments of this life knowing they will be destroyed. When we set our sights on serving God and doing His will these things are eternal. What have you set your sights on, things that are eternal or things that are worldly?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 49:11-20

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

Things to think about:

• In what ways do you put your faith in the things of this world?
• Do you put your energy into things eternal or do you put all your strength in the things of this world?
• How can we change our priorities and make the switch to focus more on eternal things?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture that reminds us of the importance of building things in our lives that are eternal. Help us not to use all of our strength on things of this life, but to put our energy toward the things You want us to do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 2 Chapters 31-60 contains thirty-five Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
