Flee Sin
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 7:6-23. Solomon tells a story about an incident he witnessed. Solomon says he was looking out the window one evening when he saw a young man going down the street. The young man passed by the harlot’s house, when he passed by she ran out to meet him.
Solomon describes her as a woman who is loud and boisterous. She is lonely and without companionship so she is in the streets seeking to allure someone in to keep her company.
She entices the young man by kissing him and telling him that her husband is away on a trip and she has been waiting for him to come by. She made her bed with fine linens and allures the young man into her house with her flattering lips.
Solomon warns his sons not to get involved with women like this. Sometimes we may find ourselves in situations that seem inviting and tempting at the time. But, Solomon warns us to flee these temptations because situations such as this end in heartbreak, destruction, and sometimes death.
First Corinthians 6:18-20 tells us, “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
As women, we need to remind ourselves not to be like the woman described in this Scripture. If you are lonely, find other ways to entertain yourself. You can spend time with your children, grandchildren, or other family members to occupy your time.
If you are a man, there are plenty of warnings in this Scripture to remind you to be on guard against the temptations the enemy sends your way. Also, remember not to let him use you to be the one to initiate temptations either.
We all have to be on guard. Don’t let the enemy use you to tempt someone else and be on guard when the enemy sends someone to try to tempt you. Remember, he is always looking for someone to destroy. If he can’t tempt you in one way, he will be looking for other ways to snare you away from being what God wants you to be.
The Bible says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). This Scripture reminds us that there is with temptation a way to escape, we have to be aware and look for the way to escape.

Proverbs 7:6-27
6 For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
7 And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
8 Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
9 In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
2 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
Things to think about:
- In what ways does Satan tempt us to sin?
- How can we flee the temptations to sin?
- What is the best way to handle a situation like the one described in this Scripture?
Prayer of the Day:
Dear Heavenly Father,
As we read this Scripture we see that Solomon tells his son a story to get his point across about fleeing the temptations of sin. Help us to do as Solomon suggested, as well. Help us not to put ourselves in compromising situations so that we can be tempted to sin. When temptation comes our way help us to find a way to escape it. Help us to keep our bodies clean and pure. Forgive us of the times that we have failed You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
