Daily Bible Reading “7 Things God Hates” (Proverbs 6:16-19)

7 Things God Hates

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 6:16-19. In this Scripture, Solomon tells us these six things the LORD hates: yes, seven are an abomination unto him:

  • A proud look
  • A lying tongue
  • Hands that shed innocent blood
  • A heart that devises wicked imaginations
  • Feet that are swift in running to mischief
  • A false witness who speaks lies
  • Those who sow discord among the brethren

First John 2:16 tells us, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

In Psalm 120:2 the Psalmist cries out, “Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.”

In Proverbs 12:22 we are told, “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

In Psalm 57:4 David said, “My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.”

God is righteous and holy, but He hates evil. The word abomination means disgusting. God hates these things. They are disgusting to Him.

As Christians we should be humble and not proud. We should tell the truth and not lie. We should not be one to shed innocent blood. We should strive to have peace with others and not strife. We should do our best to get along with our brothers and sisters in Christ and not cause trouble among the brethren.

Notice that in this Scripture he mentions the major parts of our bodies, our eyes, our mouth, our hands, our heart, and our feet.

Some of these things may be a challenge for some of us to conquer in our own strength as we deal with human nature, but with God’s help we can be like He would have us to be.

Romans 12:1 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 6:16-19

16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Things to think about:

  • Why does the LORD hate these things?
  • What can we do to guard against these things?
  •  If you have a problem in any of these areas ask God to forgive you and help you.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture we see that Solomon lists seven things that You hate. In face he even goes as far as to say these things disgust You. Help us not to be people who live like this. Help us to be humble, peaceful, truthful, and to love our brothers and sisters in Christ. Forgive us of the times we have failed You in any of these areas. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
