Jesus Instructs His Disciples

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 10:21-42. This Scripture is a continuation of the previous lesson where Jesus called His disciples. Jesus gave them a commandment before He sent them out to let them know what to expect and what He expected of them.

Jesus lets them know it wouldn’t be easy. He says some of the people who will give them the hardest time will be members of their own families. He tells them they don’t need to fear man, who can only kill the body, but they need to fear the one who can kill the body and soul in hell.

Jesus then compares them to the sparrows by letting them know if God takes care of the sparrows, how much more valuable the disciples are to Him. He tells them every hair on their head is numbered. Jesus tells them he who doesn’t take up his cross and follow Him isn’t worthy of Him. Jesus then says whoever receives the disciples, receives Him.

As we read this Scripture we realize that Jesus and God don’t want us to put anything or anybody ahead of them in our lives.

Only God is eternal. This is something I feel God has been trying to teach me in the past several years.

When I lost my Mama a few years ago it was really hard on me. I was used to seeing her several times a week. Even though I had to visit her at the nursing home or in the hospital the last few years of her life, I still missed her.

As we get older, I think we realize more and more our loved ones are just loaned to us for a season. Jesus was explaining to the disciples we shouldn’t value our loved ones more than Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 10:21-42

21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Things to think about:

Would you have been willing to follow Jesus after you heard Him talk about the things He talked about in this Scripture?
Have you ever had to deny someone else in order to do something you felt the Lord wanted you to do?
Would you be willing to deny yourself of some of the creature comforts you are used to in order to do God’s will?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture of the commandments Jesus gave to His disciples, we see life with You isn’t always going to be easy. Help us know You are in control and You are watching over us. Help us to realize the difference between things that are temporary and things that are eternal. Give us strength as we take up our cross and follow You. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed is He who Comes in the Name of the Lord” (Matthew 23:13:39)

Blessed is He who Comes in the Name of the Lord

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 23:13:39. In this Scripture, Jesus turns His attention to the scribes, Pharisees, and hypocrites. Today’s lesson is hard because Jesus was angry with them for the way they conducted themselves. Do you wonder what they did to make Him angry?

They made much of some things but left other things undone. They weren’t honest in their dealings with people. As you read through these Scriptures, think about these things Jesus is talking about. If you are guilty of any of them, bow your head, pray, and ask Him to forgive you.

Jesus says we need to get the inside, our heart, and soul, right with Him, instead of just putting on an outward appearance of being right with Him. He is more concerned about us having a relationship with Him than a lot of other things we concern ourselves with.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 23:13-39

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men’s] bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Things to think about:

What were some of the things the Lord talked to the scribes, Pharisees, and hypocrites about?
Was Jesus more concerned about the outside being clean or the inside?
Why does Jesus tell them their house is left desolate?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please help us not to be like the scribes, Pharisees, and hypocrites. Help us to do what is right in Your eyes. Help us to get the inside of our vessels clean and pure before You and then the outside will be clean also. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Talks about the End of Time” (Matthew 24:1-35)

Jesus Talks About the End of Time

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 24:1-35. In this Scripture, Jesus left the temple and His disciples came and wanted to show Him the buildings of the temple. Jesus tells them not one of the stones will be left intact; they’ll all be thrown down. Was He speaking literally?

Jesus went to sit on the Mount of Olives, and the disciples came to Him asking Him what the signs of His coming and the end of the world would be. Jesus warns them there will be many who will come claiming to be Him, but warns them not to be deceived. We have to be careful who we listen to. It is good for us to read our Bible, so we can know the truth for ourselves.

Jesus tells them there will be wars and nations will rise against nations, there will be famines, pests, and earthquakes. Does any of this sound familiar? Jesus tells them there will be persecutions, and people will turn against one another. Jesus compares these happenings to the labor a woman goes through when she is having a baby. The pains will get stronger and stronger until the baby is birthed.

Jesus says the gospel will be preached to all nations, and then the end will come. In Matthew 24:27-35 He tells them what will happen.

Jesus compares His coming to the fig tree and reminds us to watch for the signs. When we see these things happening Jesus is talking about we’ll know the time is drawing near. We are to watch and be ready for His appearance.

I know these Scriptures are heavy, but I want to encourage you to keep the faith, and anxiously await the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it before it is too late. God loves you, and it isn’t His will that any should perish.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 24:1-35

1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.
23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.
26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Things to think about:

What did Jesus tell the disciples about the temple?
What did Jesus say for us to take heed to?
What did Jesus say about the gospel of the kingdom?
What is the significance of the fig tree?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture, where Jesus tells the disciples about the end of time, help us not to be deceived. Help us to discern the truth. Help us to keep the faith. These are troubled times we read about and we need Your help to get through them. Help us to look forward to the day when we see the Son of Man coming in the clouds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Died on the Cross” (Matthew 27:33-54)

Jesus Died on the Cross

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 27:33-54. As we look at this Scripture, try to imagine you are there. In this Scripture, Jesus was led to Golgotha, a place of a skull, which in Hebrew and Latin is Calvary, to be crucified.

In John’s account of the situation, he says in John 19:25-28, “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.”

They gave Him vinegar to drink mixed with gall and when He tasted it He wouldn’t drink it. John 19:30, states, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

They crucified Him and cast lots for His garments as it was prophesied in Psalm 22:18, “They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.” They put a sign of accusation up over His head, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS, which was really true. He is the Messiah.

There were two thieves who were crucified with Jesus, one on each side. The people, mocked Him, including the scribes, Pharisees, and elders, saying things like, “You destroyed the temple and built it back in three days, save yourself.” And, “If you are the Son of God come down off the cross,” and “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself.”

Then they said, “If He is the King of Israel, let Him come down off the cross and then we will believe Him.” “He trusted in God, so why won’t He deliver Him?” “He said He was the Son of God.” They accused Jesus and mocked Him, but He truly was the Son of God.

John 19:31-37 tells us:
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Can you imagine the agony He must have gone through? He had been hanging there on the cross for six hours. The Scripture says it was dark over all the land from the sixth hour until the ninth hour. In the ninth hour, Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

He cried again with a loud voice and then Jesus died, and immediately the veil of the temple was torn in two, and there was an earthquake, and the rocks divided. The graves opened and many bodies of the saints that were dead came out of their graves after His resurrection and went into the city and many people saw them. When they saw all this happen, they said, “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 27:33-54

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

Things to think about:

Can you imagine being in the crowd that day?

How does it make you feel to read how Jesus was treated?

Remember, Jesus went through all of this so we could be saved from our sins. Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read these things that happened to Your Son, Jesus, our hearts are broken to see what He went through, so we could be forgiven. Please forgive us of our sins, and help us to live for You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, Lord. Amen.
