Daily Bible Reading “Don’t Be Weary in Well Doing” (2 Thessalonians 3:1-18)

Don’t Be Weary in Well Doing

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Thessalonians 3:1-18. Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for them that the Word of the Lord will spread and glorify God among others, as it had with them. God promised in Isaiah 55:11 that His Word would not return void. Paul asked them to pray also that God would deliver them from the wicked. Paul reminds them that not all men are of faith as they were. Do you know why Paul would make that statement?

Paul declares the Lord is faithful. Paul trusts God to take care of them. Paul encourages the Thessalonians, telling them that the Lord would establish them and keep them from evil. Paul says we have faith in the Lord concerning them that they will do the things Paul and his friends taught them. Paul tells the Thessalonians that the Lord will fill their hearts with the love of God and give them the patience they needed while waiting for Christ’ return. Paul commands them to remove themselves from their brethren who are rebellious, those who don’t walk in the ways they were taught, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul reminds them that they were taught how to live Godly lives. They are to follow Paul’s example of living righteously. Paul and his fellow laborers worked night and day so they would be able to provide for themselves. Paul made tents for a living. They didn’t want to be a burden on anybody. Gradually the churches began to pay pastors for their services. Paul and his friends did this so that they could set a good example before the Thessalonians. It was Paul’s belief that if a man didn’t work, he didn’t deserve to eat.

Paul tells them that he knows that there are some of their brothers who won’t work, but are busy getting into trouble and tending to other people’s business. Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to let them know that they need to work and provide their own food to eat.

Paul encourages the Thessalonians not to grow weary in doing well. Paul tells them that if there is any man who doesn’t want to obey the words of this letter, to separate from him, so he might be ashamed of his actions. Paul’s motive was to bring the unruly people to repentance. He reminds them not to treat the unruly like an enemy, but to reprimand them as a brother.

Paul says, “May the Lord of peace give you peace always and be with you all.” Paul tells them that he wrote this letter with his own hand, which is a token of every letter he writes. He ends the letter by saying, “The grace of the Lord be with you all.” According to the editors of the KJV of the Bible this epistle was written from Athens.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 3:1-18

1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:

2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

8 Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. [[The following was added by editors of the KJV: The second [epistle to the Thessalonians was written from Athens.]]]

Things to think about:

  • How often do you pray for your spiritual leaders?
  • What other ways can we support our spiritual leaders?
  • How can we deal with unruly people?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to work and live Godly lives. Help us to do Your will. He tells them how to deal with those who are unruly among them. Give us wisdom in dealing with those we come in contact with who aren’t living right before You. May the grace and peace of God be with us all. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Stand Fast” (2 Thessalonians 2:8-17)

Stand Fast

Today’s Daily Bible eading is from 2 Thessalonians 2:8-17. Paul continues with the letter to the Thessalonians. He tells them that God will reveal the wicked. The Lord will consume him with the spirit of his mouth. What does Paul mean by that statement?

This is also referred to in Isaiah 11:4, “But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.”

He will destroy the wicked one with the brightness of His presence. Look at these two Scriptures from Revelation where it talks about the fact that we won’t need the sun or moon because the Lord God will be our light. Revelation 21:23, “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” Revelation 22:5, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” I don’t think we can even imagine how glorious His appearance will be.

The antichrist is a messenger of Satan. He’ll have power, signs, and lying wonders, but they’ll be of an evil nature. He’ll be a deceiver of unrighteousness. Those who follow him will perish because they didn’t receive the truth of God so they could be saved. God will send them a strong delusion because they believed the lies of the enemy and not the truth of God and they’ll be lost forever. Their pleasure was in unrighteousness and not in the righteousness of God.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that he gives thanks to God for them always because God chose them from the beginning. They received salvation through the sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth of God. Paul says God called the Thessalonians by our preaching of the gospel to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul encourages them to stand fast in the Lord. He reminds them to follow the gospel which they taught them. Both when Paul and his friends shared the gospel with them through preaching and through their letters.

Paul says, “Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.”

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 2:8-17

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Things to think about:

  • Have you received the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ?
  • If so, how are you standing fast and holding on to the truths of God’s Word?
  • How does it comfort you to review the promises of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul assures us that You have victory over the evil one. Help us to remember that throughout our life. The battle isn’t over and You are the victor. We praise You and thank You for that promise. Help those who haven’t believed yet to come to the knowledge of the Lord. We thank You for the gift of salvation, through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to hold onto the hope of eternal life that You have given us through Your grace. Comfort our hearts, establish us in every good word, and work as we serve You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Coming of the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 2: 1-7)

Coming of the Lord

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Thessalonians 2: 1-7. Paul addresses a concern that the Thessalonians had from something he said in his first letter about the Second Coming of the Lord. Paul indicates that there are two parts to Christ’s coming. In Paul’s first letter, he talks about the coming of Christ to gather the church or Christians. That is found in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.

Apparently, there was some confusion in the church and the people thought the day of the Lord had already come or that they were in the middle of it. Paul tells them that he didn’t want them to be confused or troubled in their spirit, by things they heard, or by his letter concerning the day of Christ.

Paul warns them not to let anyone mislead them concerning this, because the Lord wasn’t coming back until certain events took place. One of those events is the great falling away from God. The other thing that has to happen is that the man of sin or the son of perdition is revealed. The word “perdition” means destruction. That man is also known as the antichrist.

He is the one who opposes God and everything God stands for, so that he can try to place himself in authority over the world. He’ll set something up in the temple of God in Jerusalem for worship. Daniel speaks of this in Daniel 11:31, “And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.”

Paul reminds the Thessalonians that he told them about this when he was with them before. In 1 Thessalonians 5:2 Paul said, “The day of the Lord would come like a thief in the night.” Matthew 24:36 says, “No man knows the day or hour that the Lord will return.”

These events won’t all take place in one day, but over a period of time. The first part the gathering of the church will take place first. The second part the great tribulation will take place over a period of time after that. It is a time of great judgment from God, which the Scripture talks about in Matthew 24:1-31. Paul had told them about the rapture of the church in his first letter. Obviously, they were concerned that they had missed the rapture since they believed they were already in the tribulation period.

God will allow the antichrist to be revealed in His time. Sin and wickedness is already at work in the world today, but the Holy Spirit has restraints on it. In God’s perfect timing the Holy Spirit will reveal the man of sin.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 2:1-7

1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Things to think about:

  • What was Paul’s concern for the Thessalonians in this Scripture?
  • What does Paul warn them about in this Scripture?
  • Have you ever studied about the Second Coming of Christ?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Here Paul talks to the people about the second coming of Christ and the antichrist. Even though we don’t like to think about some of the things that will take place in the end of time, we need to know these things. Help us to study Your Word so we’ll have knowledge of the things to come and not be led astray by people who try to teach anything other than the truth of the gospel. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Glorify the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 1:1-12)

Glorify the Lord

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12. This letter is from Paul, Silvanus (whom also is known as Silas) and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians. Silas had been with Paul on his first visit to Thessalonica so the people knew him well.

Paul starts the letter with his usual greeting offering a blessing of grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul encourages them by saying he thanks God always for them. Why do you think Paul is so thankful for the Thessalonians?

Paul founded the church at Thessalonica on his second missionary journey. Paul is so thankful for the Thessalonians because of the outstanding growth of their faith and their abounding love to each other.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that he and his friends brag about them to God’s other churches for their faith and patience while they’re enduring trouble and persecutions. Paul reminds them that God will use these situations to show His justice and to make them worthy for His kingdom, for which they are suffering.

Paul tells them God’s honor is to repay suffering to those who persecute them. God will provide rest for the persecuted including us when Jesus returns from heaven with His angels. Jesus will come with flaming fire to cause punishment to those who don’t know God and obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their punishment will be eternal devastation away from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that Jesus will come on that day and receive glory with all His saints. All believers will praise and worship Him. Paul tells them they will be included in the celebration because they believed what was preached to them. Paul tells them he and his friends continue to pray for them that God will enable them to live a life worthy of His calling.

Paul prays that God will help them to fulfill every good thing that He prompts them to do because of their faith in Him. He also prayed that they will glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by the way they live and that He will honor them along with him. Paul has faith that God will make this possible because of His grace and that of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Things to think about:

  • Why was Paul proud of the Thessalonians?
  • How can we glorify God even in our trouble?
  • Do you try to live in a way that glorifies God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul is thankful for the love and faith of the Thessalonians. Help us to have that kind of love and faith. He exhorts them to live in a way that will glorify You. Help us to also live our lives so that we glorify Your name. Forgive us of the times we fail You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Verse:

worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power: That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading “Edify One Another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11-28)

Edify One Another

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 5:11-28. Paul tells the Thessalonians to comfort and edify one another. He urges them to honor their leaders in the church. The leaders work hard to serve you, teach you, and give you spiritual guidance. Paul tells them to show love and respect for their leaders. Those who minister spend countless hours studying the Bible among the other duties they perform as leaders of the church. They deserve our love, honor, and respect.

Paul reminds them to live peaceably toward one another. Why do you think Paul told them this? He says for them to warn those who are disobedient, console those who are timid; sustain the weak, and be patient with everybody. He warns them not to render evil for evil, but pursue what is good both to those within the body of Christ and to everybody outside the body of Christ.

Paul gives them a whole list of things to do and not to do.

  • Rejoice continually. We have to remember our joy is based on God and what He did for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, not on our circumstances.
  • Pray always. Prayer is our way of communicating with God. We are to have constant communication and fellowship with Him. You can talk to Him about anything. He loves you and He wants to hear from you.
  • Give thanks in everything. We need to give thanks to God in everything, not just the good things. Even in the bad things of life, there are blessings. We have to look for them.
  • Don’t quench the Spirit. If you are a Christian, the Spirit of God lives inside you. Don’t do anything to smother His effect in your life. Think of the Holy Spirit as a flame burning inside of you. You don’t want to do anything to put that fire out.
  • Don’t despise prophesying. God speaks through His people. We need to listen, and test all things to see if they’re from God.
  • Prove all things. Paul is telling them to test things to see if they’re right. Use God’s Word as your standard. See if it measures up to the Word.
  • Hold onto good. Embrace the good things. When you have a choice to make between good and evil, always choose good.
  • Abstain from all appearance of evil. Paul doesn’t just warn us to stay away from evil, but he says to abstain from even the appearance of evil.

Paul then gives them a sort of blessing, saying, “The God of peace sanctify you.” The word “sanctify” means to be set apart. As Christians, we are to be set apart to serve God. Paul prays that their whole spirit, soul, and body would be blameless until the coming of Jesus. He tells them that God is faithful, He called you and He can make you holy. You see we can’t do it on our own. It is only in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ that we can be made holy.

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for them. He then tells them to greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. He urges them to read his letter to all the brethren. Paul wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to hear the message of his letter personally. He ended the letter by saying, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.”

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 5:11-28

11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. {The following was added by editors of the KJV: The first epistle to the Thessalonians was written from Athens}

Things to think about:

  • How can we honor those who are leaders in our churches?
  • What are the things Paul reminds us to do?
  • What are the things Paul reminds us not to do?
  • How can we edify our fellow believers?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. Paul tells the Thessalonians to love, honor, and respect their leaders. Help us to do the same for our spiritual leaders. He exhorts them to live Godly lives. Help us to live Godly lives as well. We know we can’t do it on our own. We need Your help. Help us, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
