Daily Bible Reading “Stand Fast” (2 Thessalonians 2:8-17)

Stand Fast

Today’s Daily Bible eading is from 2 Thessalonians 2:8-17. Paul continues with the letter to the Thessalonians. He tells them that God will reveal the wicked. The Lord will consume him with the spirit of his mouth. What does Paul mean by that statement?

This is also referred to in Isaiah 11:4, “But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.”

He will destroy the wicked one with the brightness of His presence. Look at these two Scriptures from Revelation where it talks about the fact that we won’t need the sun or moon because the Lord God will be our light. Revelation 21:23, “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” Revelation 22:5, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” I don’t think we can even imagine how glorious His appearance will be.

The antichrist is a messenger of Satan. He’ll have power, signs, and lying wonders, but they’ll be of an evil nature. He’ll be a deceiver of unrighteousness. Those who follow him will perish because they didn’t receive the truth of God so they could be saved. God will send them a strong delusion because they believed the lies of the enemy and not the truth of God and they’ll be lost forever. Their pleasure was in unrighteousness and not in the righteousness of God.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that he gives thanks to God for them always because God chose them from the beginning. They received salvation through the sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth of God. Paul says God called the Thessalonians by our preaching of the gospel to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul encourages them to stand fast in the Lord. He reminds them to follow the gospel which they taught them. Both when Paul and his friends shared the gospel with them through preaching and through their letters.

Paul says, “Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.”

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 2:8-17

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Things to think about:

  • Have you received the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ?
  • If so, how are you standing fast and holding on to the truths of God’s Word?
  • How does it comfort you to review the promises of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul assures us that You have victory over the evil one. Help us to remember that throughout our life. The battle isn’t over and You are the victor. We praise You and thank You for that promise. Help those who haven’t believed yet to come to the knowledge of the Lord. We thank You for the gift of salvation, through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to hold onto the hope of eternal life that You have given us through Your grace. Comfort our hearts, establish us in every good word, and work as we serve You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
