Hold Not Thy Peace

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 109:1-15. Psalm 109 is a Psalm of vindication by David to the chief musician. David requested of God, who he praises, not to hold His peace against his enemies. David’s enemies spoke badly of him and told lies about him. These wicked people said hateful words against David. He was so upset with them he asked God to take care of them. Have you ever been so frustrated with someone that you asked God to handle them?

David hadn’t done anything against the people who complained about him. He gave himself to prayer and tried to show them love, but they returned his love with hatred and evil for his good. Finally David didn’t spare any mercy. He asked God to let Satan sit at his enemy’s right hand. David asked God to pour out His wrath on the workers of iniquity, who poured their wrath out on him.

David is pretty explicit in what he asked God to do. He must have been really distraught with these people, or person. I am reminded of a Scripture in Romans 12:19, which says, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” When people do us wrong, we don’t have to take vengeance against them. We can have faith that God will avenge His children. Does it comfort you to know that God can handle these kinds of situations for us?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 109:1-15

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;
2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.
4 For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.
5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.
7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.
8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.
13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
15 Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Things to think about:

Why was David so upset?
In what ways had David’s enemies betrayed him?
How did David respond to their betrayal?
Have you ever prayed a prayer like this to God concerning those who have wronged you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 109, where we see that David talked to You about whatever was on his mind. He didn’t hold back. He told You exactly what he was feeling. LORD, help us to realize that we can talk to You like we would talk to our best friend. You care about what we are going through and what we are feeling. Help us to share with You what is on our heart. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 4 Chapters 91-118 contains thirty-six Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Exalt and Praise the LORD” (Psalm 107:32-43)

Exalt and Praise the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 107:32-43. The Psalmist reminds us to exalt and praise the LORD in the congregation and assemblies of elders. What does the word “exalt” mean? Some of the words we may use to describe the word exalt are: to lift up, magnify, or glorify.

The Psalmist reminds us of God’s awesome power. God has the power to turn rivers into a wilderness and streams into dry ground, or vice versa. He can change a fruitful land into barren land. He causes the hungry to dwell there so they can plant crops and vineyards and watch His blessings cause food to grow and increase. He blesses the people and their cattle.

The people may go through seasons of being diminished and brought low by oppression, affliction, and sorrow. Have you ever noticed this in your own life cycle? You may go through times of everything going great. Then, you may have other times when sorrow and pain are prevalent in your life.

God pours contempt on princes and makes them to wander in the wilderness. He sets the poor on high and causes them to multiply and make families. The righteous see the works of the LORD and rejoice. Those who are wise will observe the ways of the LORD and understand His loving-kindness. What amazes you about the way the LORD works?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 107:32-43

32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

What are some ways we can exalt the LORD?
How do you praise the LORD for His wondrous works?
Have you ever noticed how sometimes the poor are raised up and the wealthy brought low? How does that make you feel or how do you react?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 107, where the Psalmist reminds us to exalt and worship You. Help us to remember to lift You up not only when we are gathered as a congregation, but in our daily lives. Give us strength and courage during the many seasons of our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So” (Psalm 107:1-21)

Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 107:1-21. The chapter reminds us, “O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so.” Have you been redeemed by the blood of the lamb from the hand of the enemy?

The Psalmist talks about the children of Israel and how the LORD gathered them from the north, south, east, and west. They were wandering in the wilderness without any place to call home. They were hungry and thirsty. They cried out to the LORD. He delivered them and led them to their chosen city.

You will see the same verse several times throughout this chapter, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” God satisfies those who long for Him and fills those who hunger and thirst for Him with His goodness. He sets the captives free, those who are bound by the chains of their rebellion against God.

The children of Israel caused a lot of their own problems by being discontent and disobedient to God. When they saw their distress and cried out to God, He heard their cries. He sent His Word and delivered them from their own destruction. How many times do we cause our own problems by being stubborn and rebellious?

As the redeemed of God we need to be obedient. We need worship and praise Him. We need to share the Gospel with others. As believers we’re called to share with the world the wonderful gift of salvation that they can have through Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 107:1-21

1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
15 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Things to think about:

For what do you give thanks to the LORD?
In what ways do you praise the LORD?
Do you only cry out to God when you are in trouble, or do you talk to Him on a daily basis?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We give thanks to You for Your mercy, goodness, loving-kindness, and wonderful works. Help us to be obedient and not rebellious. Help us to worship and praise You in spirit and truth. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Save Us, O LORD” (Psalm 106:34-48)

Save Us, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 106:34-48. The Israelites rebelled against the LORD. He commanded them to destroy the nations who refused to honor God, whose lands God gave to the Israelites, but they didn’t do as they were told. They socialized with the heathens, learned their ways, and served their idols.

The children of Israel even sacrificed their own sons and daughters to the idols of Canaan. Can you imagine shedding the innocent blood of their sons and daughters to the idols? Because of their disobedience, the land was polluted with innocent blood and they defiled themselves with their own works of iniquity.

The wrath of the LORD was kindled against them so much that He abhorred His inheritance. Because of their disobedience, He gave them over to their enemies and left those who hated them to rule over them. God delivered His chosen ones so many times, but they kept doing wrong and getting themselves into situations that weren’t pleasing to Him.

But God still remembered His covenant with the people of Israel. He heard their cry when they called to Him. He made the people who took them into captivity take pity on them. He is a merciful and loving God even when we fail to love Him and serve Him.

The Psalmist cries out to God to save them and deliver them from the heathen so they may give thanks and praise the LORD. He ends the Psalm by saying, “Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 106:34-48

34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:
35 But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.
36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.
37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,
38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.
40 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.
41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.
44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:
45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.
46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.
47 Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.
48 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.

How do we at times turn our backs on God?
Why did God show them mercy despite their disobedience?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 106 where the Psalmist reminds us that even though the children of Israel were disobedient You showed mercy toward them. Help us to be obedient children of God and do our best to honor and praise You forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Help Us” (Psalm 106:24-33)

God Help Us

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 106:24-33. In this Psalm, we’re reminded again of how the children of Israel saw all of God’s wondrous works, yet they rebelled and turned their backs on Him. Have we ever been guilty of the same thing? In this portion of the chapter, the Psalmist tells us they despised the land and didn’t believe God’s Word.

They murmured and complained about everything God gave them and wouldn’t listen to His voice. He became angry with them and lifted up His hand to destroy them in the wilderness. He overthrew their descendants and scattered them among the nations.

They even took wives from the local idol-worshipers and joined Baalpeor in eating the sacrifices of the dead. They made God so angry that He poured a plague out on them. Then, an Israelite named Phinehas took a stand, executed judgment, and the plague was stopped. His act was credited to him as righteousness from generation to generation (Numbers 25).

The people angered Moses and God with their strife, so much that Moses spoke against them. They grumbled and complained until Moses lost his patience with them. But then, Moses stood up for them and asked God to have mercy on them even though they were ungrateful. Do you have people in your life who try your patience and need your forgiveness repeatedly, yet you stick with them? Think about how Moses must have felt standing up to God for the children of Israel.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 106:24-33

24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

25 But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.

26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

27 To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

28 They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

30 Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

32 They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

33 Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

Things to think about:

What were some of the things the children of Israel did to anger God?
What did God do to punish them for their rebellion?
Who took a stand this time?
How did Moses react to their complaints?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 106 where the Psalmist warns us against complaining about the things God has provided for us. He shows us there are consequences for our rebellion. Help us to be grateful and thankful. Help us to be faithful followers of Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
