Daily Bible Reading “Consequences of Sin” (Genesis 3:9-19)

Consequences of Sin

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 3:9-19. In this passage, we find that the LORD God was looking for Adam. He called Adam, and said to him, “Where are you?”

Adam replied, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

God asked Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree, that I commanded you not to eat?”

The man blamed the woman saying, “The woman that you provided for me gave me the fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

The LORD God questioned the woman, “What have you done?” The woman blamed the serpent saying, “The serpent enticed me, and I ate the fruit from the tree.”

The LORD God told the serpent, “Because you did this, you are cursed above all cattle, and all beast of the field. You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

The LORD God told the woman, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception; in sorrow you will birth children; and your desire will be to your husband, and he will rule over you.”

The LORD God spoke to Adam saying, “Because you have listened to your wife, and have eaten the fruit of the tree, which I commanded you not to eat: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you will eat of it all the days of your life. The land will produce thorns and thistles; and you will eat the herb of the field; through hard work and the sweat of your brow you will eat bread, until you return to the ground; for out of it you were taken: from dust you came, and to the earth you will return.”

Adam and the woman had sinned against God. God let them know that there are consequences when we are disobedient and sin against Him. These consequences not only affected them, but also still affect us today.

We are reminded in Romans 3:23-24, that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, and the only redemption for our sins is through accepting Jesus Christ as Savior.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 3:9-19

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Things to think about:

Why were Adam and his wife hiding from God?

Who did Adam blame for his disobedience?

Who did the woman blame for her disobedience?

What punishment did God give the serpent for his part in this sinful act?

What did God tell the woman the consequences would be for her disobedience?

What were the consequences given to Adam for his disobedience?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage we see that there are consequences for sin and disobedience to You. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who came into this world and gave His life on the cross to redeem us from our sins. Help us to do Your will. Forgive us of all the times we have failed You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Woman is Tempted” (Genesis 3:1-8)

The Woman is Tempted

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 3:1-8. In chapter 3 we see that Adam’s wife was confronted by the serpent, which was the craftiest of all the animals that God created.

The serpent questioned the woman saying, “Yea, hath God said, you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” What kind of serpent is this that can talk?

The woman answered the serpent saying, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.”

The woman embellished the story a bit, because if you look back at Genesis 2:17-18, you’ll see that God told Adam not to eat it; He never said anything about touching it.

The serpent said to the woman, “You shall not surely die: God knows that in the day you eat of the fruit, your eyes will be opened, and you will be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

The serpent tempted the woman, denying what God said, and telling her that the fruit would make them wise. How many times does the enemy try to tempt us, in the same way he did the woman?

The woman saw that the fruit of the tree was pleasing to the eyes and looked like it would be good to eat. She also remembered that the serpent told her that eating the fruit of the tree would make her wise, so she took a piece of the fruit, and ate it. She also gave the fruit to her husband, who was with her; and he ate it as well.

Even though Adam knew what God had told him, he never spoke up or stopped the woman from listening to the serpent. He even participated in the act of disobedience. Did Adam do that because he didn’t want to embarrass the woman or what? What might have been the outcome if Adam would have spoken up and stopped the woman from sinning? Only the LORD knows.

The eyes of both the man and woman were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together, and made aprons to cover themselves. Remember, back in Genesis 2:25, both the man and woman were naked, but they were not ashamed. But, now that they had disobeyed God they were ashamed of their nakedness.

Then, they heard the voice of the LORD God, who was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Adam and his wife knew that they had disobeyed God’s command and were afraid, so they hid from God among the trees of the garden.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 3:1-8

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Things to think about:

Why did the serpent try to tempt the woman?

With what did the serpent tempt the woman?

In what way did the woman change what God had said?

Why did the woman give into the temptation?
Why did Adam participate in the disobedience to God?
What did they do when they heard God walking in the garden?
How do we respond to God when we sin?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this portion of Scripture, help us to realize the tactics that the enemy uses to try to tempt us to sin. Give us strength when facing the enemy so we don’t give in to his temptations. Thank You for Jesus who died on the cross to save us from our sins. Help us to always obey Your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Made Woman” (Genesis 2:18-25)

God Made Woman

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:18-25. In this passage of Scripture, we see that the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

God created all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air from the ground. Then, He brought them to Adam to see what he would like to call them: and whatever Adam called them, that was their name. Adam gave names to all the cattle, birds, and every beast of the field.

There was no companion for Adam. God recognized that it wasn’t good for man to be alone. So, the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come upon Adam, and as he slept, the LORD took one of his ribs, and then He closed up Adam’s flesh. Basically God performed surgery on Adam removing one of his ribs.

The LORD took the rib, which He had taken from man, and made a woman, and brought her to the man. God didn’t want the man to be alone.

He made woman from the man’s rib this may signify that the woman is to walk beside the man as a companion. Some say this may be why women are so emotional because she was created from the bone that is closest to a man’s heart, the center of all our emotions.

Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” God created woman to be a companion and helper to the man. They are to work together to create a home life and family together. This was the first marriage and a great example of what God intended the marriage relationship to be like.

Verse 24 is often used in marriage ceremonies still today, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

The man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed. At this time in history there was no sin in the world neither was there any clothes like there are today, so the man and woman had no reason to be ashamed that they were naked.

Proverbs 18:22 says, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-11, reminds us, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:18-25

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Who named the animals?

Why did God create woman?

How did God create woman?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we are in awe at the way You took a rib from man and created woman. There is nothing more precious than a good relationship between a husband and wife. Thank You for creating that partnership for us. Help us not to take for granted the importance of the husband/wife relationship in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Garden of Eden” (Genesis 2:8-17)

The Garden of Eden

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 2:8-17. In this Scripture we see that, God planted a garden toward the east in Eden; and he put the man he created there.

God made every tree that is beautiful, and those that are good for food to grow from the ground. He also caused the tree of life to grow in the middle of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

There was a river that flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was separated into four heads.

The first river is called Pison. It flows through the land of Havilah, where there is gold. The gold of that land is good: there are also precious stones.

The second river is called Gihon, which flows through the land of Ethiopia. The third river is called Hiddekel, which flows toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

God put the man in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. He instructed the man, saying, “You may eat of every tree of the garden without restrictions, except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Its fruit is forbidden: if you eat from it you will die” (paraphrased).

I think of the Garden of Eden as being a place of paradise. The most beautiful place you’d ever want to see, with everything you would need provided. I’ve included a map I found online to help you get a picture of where the Garden of Eden may have been located.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 2:8-17

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.

15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

What is the name of the garden God created?

What is the name of the four rivers that flowed from Eden?

What restriction did God give the man in the garden?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we learn of the beautiful garden that You created. Thank You for all the beautiful trees You created in this world, including those which are good for food. Thank You for the rivers, streams, and ocean that You created. Help us as we enjoy all these things to remember You are the creator. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
