Daily Bible Reading “Creation Day Four” (Genesis 1:14-19)

Genesis 1 16Creation Day Four

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 1:14-19. On the fourth day of creation, God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

God created two great lights: the bigger light to rule the day, and the smaller light to rule the night. He created the stars as well. God fixed these lights in the heavens to provide light to the earth. He created the sun to rule over the day and the moon to rule over the night. Their purpose was to divide the light from the darkness. God looked at His creation and saw that it was good. The evening and morning were the fourth day.

There is nothing more beautiful than a sun-shiny day, or a moon lit night with all the stars shining in the sky.

Psalm 19:6 speaks of the sun, “Its rising is from one end of heaven, And its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.”

Psalm 104:19 speaks of both the moon and the sun, “He appointed the moon for seasons; The sun knows its going down.”

Psalm 147:4 tells us that God knows all the stars by name, “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.” Can you imagine? I sometimes have trouble remembering the names of people who I know, much less all the stars. If He knows the stars by name, what does He know about us?

We find this promise in Genesis 8:22, “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter, and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 1:14-19

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Things to think about:

  • What did God create on the fourth day?
  • What was the purpose of His creation?
  • Can you imagine God knowing the name of all the stars?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage of Scripture we are in awe at Your creation. We are reminded of all the beauty You created when creating the world and everything in it. We are also reminded that You are all-knowing. Help us to look around and be thankful for for everything You created. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse to Journal or Memorize:

And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

– Genesis 1:16

By Deborah H. Bateman

About the Book:

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 by Deborah H. Bateman is 30th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book contains approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 has been published in a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Creation Day Three” (Genesis 1:9-13)

Genesis 1 9Creation Day Three

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 1:9-13. On the third day of creation, God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.” God called the dry land “Earth,” and He called the gathering together of the waters “Seas.” God separated the water from the dry land. Do you ever wonder how the earth looked then compared to how it looks now? God liked what He saw and thought that it was good.

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.

The earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after its kind, and trees that yield fruit, whose seed is in it after its kind. God saw that it was good. This is the first sign of life on earth. Notice how each plant or tree had the seed within it or its fruit in order to reproduce. Think about all the different plants, grasses, and trees there are in the world. What an incredible task! The evening and morning were the third day.

Now we have the earth, sea, and vegetation. Again notice the order in which God created these things. He had to bring forth the earth, before He created the vegetation, so the plants and trees would have a place to grow.

Psalm 95:5 says, “The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.” Personally, I love the ocean. It is one of my favorite places. I love the sound of the waves crashing to shore. I love to look at the horizon. It seems as if it goes on forever.

Job 26:7 tells us, “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.” It is amazing how the earth hangs in space.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 1:9-13

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

Things to think about:

  • How did God create the land?
  • Once the land was separated from the water, what was His next creation?
  • What was significant about the vegetation He created?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We are in awe, as we read this passage and see how you separated the land and sea. Then, You created vegetation of all kinds. Help us to have faith in Your omnipotent power. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse to Journal or Memorize:

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

Daily Bible Reading “God Created Heaven” (Genesis 1:6-8)

Genesis 1 6God Created Heaven

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 1:6-8. On the second day God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

Then, God made the sky, which separated the waters that were under the sky from the waters that were above the sky, and it was as He said. God called the firmament Heaven. Notice that each of God’s creations has a purpose. The evening and the morning were the second day.

Psalm 19:1 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

Job 37:18 describes the sky as a molten looking glass, “Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?”

I love looking at the sky, with its variety of colors, and the textures of the clouds. Every day it is like God painted a new piece of artwork for our enjoyment.

The clouds of the sky also serve a purpose as they gather moisture and pour rain down to water the earth. I don’t really like being out in the rain like some people do, but I love to sit and watch it rain through the window. I also love how the grass, bushes, trees, and flowers look so green and refreshed after a good rain.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 1:6-8

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Things to think about:

  • For what purpose did God create Heaven?
  • What are some other words for sky used in this Scripture?
  • Do you enjoy gazing at the sky?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this Scripture in Genesis where we learn that you created Heaven. We notice that each of your creations has a purpose. Thank you for the beauty that you share with us daily. Help us to appreciate your creation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “In the Beginning” (Genesis 1:1-5)

Genesis 1 1In the Beginning

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 1:1-5. Genesis is the first book of the Bible, in the Old Testament. It is the first book of what is called the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). These first five books of the Bible are also what the Jewish people call the Torah. Moses is considered to be the author of these books. The first chapter of Genesis is a six day account of the creation of the heavens, the earth, plants and trees, birds, animals, and man. As we go through this first chapter notice the order in which God created things.

Genesis chapter 1 begins by saying, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The earth had no form. It was empty and total darkness covered the depth of the sea. The Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw the light and He thought it was good.

God then, divided the light from the darkness. He called the light “day,” and He called the darkness “night.” The evening and the morning were the first day. Notice that the Scripture puts the evening before the morning, as if to say the day started at nightfall rather than at sunrise. This is believed to be why on the Jewish calendar a day starts in the evening, rather than the morning, as is done on the Gregorian calendar.

There are those who find it hard to believe that God could do all He did in the creation of the earth in a day. They use the Scripture from 2 Peter 3:8 to say that maybe a day was a thousand years rather than a twenty-four hour period, as we know it. “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8).

Personally, I believe that God is so powerful that if He wanted to speak something into existence, He could very well do so. The fact that the Scripture says, “The evening and the morning were the first day.” leads me to believe it was more like a day as we know it today.

Notice that God created the light first. In John 8:12 Jesus says, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 1:1-5

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Things to think about:

  • What would it be like for the world to be in total darkness?
  • Why would God create light first?
  • Have you accepted Jesus as the light of your life?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for this Scripture in the book of Genesis which tells us about the beginning of time and how you created the world. We thank you for the light that you created. Help us not to walk in darkness, but to walk in the light of the Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Noah’s Fall” (Genesis 9:20-29)

Genesis 9 20-21 Noah's FallNoah’s Fall

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 9:20-29. Noah became a farmer and planted a vineyard. He made wine from the vineyard and drank too much of the wine, and became drunk. Then, Noah went to lie down in his tent and fell asleep uncovered. Noah may not have known what the effects of drinking too much wine would be, but he became incapacitated.

Ephesians 5:18 warns us, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” The key to the whole dilemma of whether or not it is okay to drink wine is found in Ephesians 5:18 where it tells us not to get drunk with wine by drinking it in excess. This Scripture also reminds us to be filled with the Spirit, by doing so we can be full of joy until it overflows.

One of the reasons the Bible warns us about getting drunk is that drinking in excess clouds our judgement and may cause us to do things we wouldn’t ordinarily do (see Proverbs 31:4-5).

Proverbs 20:1 tells us, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”

In an effort to prove that it is okay to drink wine, some people may refer to 1Timothy 5:23, which says, “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” This Scripture seems to be suggesting using wine for medicinal purposes. There may have been a problem with the water that was causing them to get sick on their stomachs. The key to the whole dilemma of whether or not it is okay to drink wine is found in Ephesians 5:18 where it tells us not to get drunk with wine by drinking it in excess. This Scripture also reminds us to be filled with the Spirit, by doing so we will be full of joy until it overflows.

Ham, the father of Canaan, went into the tent and saw his father naked. He went outside the tent, and told his two brothers what happened. Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it over both of their shoulders, and walked backward into the tent, and covered up their father. They made sure to keep their faces facing backward, so they would not see their father’s nakedness.

In this day and age we may wonder, “What was the big deal?” But, in Noah’s day, it was a shame for a son to see his father naked. We don’t know whether anything else happened in the tent or not, but Leviticus 18 goes through whole list of people whom we should not see naked.

Once the wine wore off, Noah woke up and realized what his younger son, Ham, had done. Noah was upset and cursed, Ham’s son Canaan, and said he would be one of the least of servants to his brothers.

Noah blessed his son Shem saying, “Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.” Shem was blessed because of his relationship with God.

He also blessed his son Japheth saying, “God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.” Japheth would be blessed through his brother, Shem, but Ham’s son, Canaan would be the servant of both of the sons.

This may have been the beginning of a family feud. Can you imagine being told you would be a servant to your family members?

Noah lived 350 years after the flood and a total of 950 years before he died. Can you imagine living to be that old?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 9:20-29

20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.

25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

Things to think about:

  • What was Noah’s vocation in this Scripture?
  • Where did Noah fail?
  • What are some of the dangers of drinking too much wine?
  • What did Noah do to his sons because of the incident in this passage?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we see some of the problems with drinking too much wine. Help us to realize that sometimes these things become a trap. Help us to guard against getting caught up in drinking and the possibility of getting drunk or using bad judgement. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
