Daily Bible Reading “Glorify the Lord” (2 Thessalonians 1:1-12)

Glorify the Lord

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12. This letter is from Paul, Silvanus (whom also is known as Silas) and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians. Silas had been with Paul on his first visit to Thessalonica so the people knew him well.

Paul starts the letter with his usual greeting offering a blessing of grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul encourages them by saying he thanks God always for them. Why do you think Paul is so thankful for the Thessalonians?

Paul founded the church at Thessalonica on his second missionary journey. Paul is so thankful for the Thessalonians because of the outstanding growth of their faith and their abounding love to each other.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that he and his friends brag about them to God’s other churches for their faith and patience while they’re enduring trouble and persecutions. Paul reminds them that God will use these situations to show His justice and to make them worthy for His kingdom, for which they are suffering.

Paul tells them God’s honor is to repay suffering to those who persecute them. God will provide rest for the persecuted including us when Jesus returns from heaven with His angels. Jesus will come with flaming fire to cause punishment to those who don’t know God and obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their punishment will be eternal devastation away from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power.

Paul tells the Thessalonians that Jesus will come on that day and receive glory with all His saints. All believers will praise and worship Him. Paul tells them they will be included in the celebration because they believed what was preached to them. Paul tells them he and his friends continue to pray for them that God will enable them to live a life worthy of His calling.

Paul prays that God will help them to fulfill every good thing that He prompts them to do because of their faith in Him. He also prayed that they will glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by the way they live and that He will honor them along with him. Paul has faith that God will make this possible because of His grace and that of Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Things to think about:

Why was Paul proud of the Thessalonians?

How can we glorify God even in our trouble?

Do you try to live in a way that glorifies God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 2 Thessalonians. Paul is thankful for the love and faith of the Thessalonians. Help us to have that kind of love and faith. He exhorts them to live in a way that will glorify You. Help us to also live our lives so that we glorify Your name. Forgive us of the times we fail You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Edify One Another” (1 Thessalonians 5:11-28)

Edify One Another

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 5:11-28. Paul tells the Thessalonians to comfort and edify one another. He urges them to honor their leaders in the church. The leaders work hard to serve you, teach you, and give you spiritual guidance. Paul tells them to show love and respect for their leaders. Those who minister spend countless hours studying the Bible among the other duties they perform as leaders of the church. They deserve our love, honor, and respect.

Paul reminds them to live peaceably toward one another. Why do you think Paul told them this? He says for them to warn those who are disobedient, console those who are timid; sustain the weak, and be patient with everybody. He warns them not to render evil for evil, but pursue what is good both to those within the body of Christ and to everybody outside the body of Christ.

Paul gives them a whole list of things to do and not to do.

Rejoice continually. We have to remember our joy is based on God and what He did for us through His Son, Jesus Christ, not on our circumstances.
Pray always. Prayer is our way of communicating with God. We are to have constant communication and fellowship with Him. You can talk to Him about anything. He loves you and He wants to hear from you.
Give thanks in everything. We need to give thanks to God in everything, not just the good things. Even in the bad things of life, there are blessings. We have to look for them.
Don’t quench the Spirit. If you are a Christian, the Spirit of God lives inside you. Don’t do anything to smother His effect in your life. Think of the Holy Spirit as a flame burning inside of you. You don’t want to do anything to put that fire out.
Don’t despise prophesying. God speaks through His people. We need to listen, and test all things to see if they’re from God.
Prove all things. Paul is telling them to test things to see if they’re right. Use God’s Word as your standard. See if it measures up to the Word.
Hold onto good. Embrace the good things. When you have a choice to make between good and evil, always choose good.
Abstain from all appearance of evil. Paul doesn’t just warn us to stay away from evil, but he says to abstain from even the appearance of evil.

Paul then gives them a sort of blessing, saying, “The God of peace sanctify you.” The word “sanctify” means to be set apart. As Christians, we are to be set apart to serve God. Paul prays that their whole spirit, soul, and body would be blameless until the coming of Jesus. He tells them that God is faithful, He called you and He can make you holy. You see we can’t do it on our own. It is only in our relationship with God through Jesus Christ that we can be made holy.

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for them. He then tells them to greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. He urges them to read his letter to all the brethren. Paul wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to hear the message of his letter personally. He ended the letter by saying, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11-28

11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

How can we honor those who are leaders in our churches?

How can we edify our fellow believers?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. Paul tells the Thessalonians to love, honor, and respect their leaders. Help us to do the same for our spiritual leaders. He exhorts them to live Godly lives. Help us to live Godly lives as well. We know we can’t do it on our own. We need Your help. Help us, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let Your Light Shine” (1 Thessalonians 5:1-18)

Let Your Light Shine

Let you light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works,
and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 5:1-18. Paul tells the Thessalonians that they don’t need him to tell them about the times and the seasons. What does Paul mean by that statement? He says they know the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Paul taught the Thessalonians about these things previously. They weren’t ignorant of the things which are to come to pass in the future.

We should study the Bible and keep up with the events going on in our world so we’ll be aware. Paul warns when the world says peace and safety, then will sudden destruction come. It will be like a woman in labor having a child; they won’t be able to escape it. He reminds them that they’re children of the light; they’re not in darkness. As Christians, we’re considered children of the light or of the day. Those without Christ are in darkness. They are without salvation and without hope.

Paul says Jesus will come like a thief in the night. A thief doesn’t announce when he is coming; neither will Jesus. Jesus reminds us that no man knows the day or the hour of His return, only His Father (God) in this Scripture from Matthew 24:36: “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

Paul warns them to be sober and keep watch, so they won’t be caught off guard. He tells them to robe themselves with the armor of God, as a soldier who prepares for battle. Paul reminds them to put on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. God hasn’t chosen us for His wrath, which is actually, what we deserve because of our sins. God chose us to attain salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus died for us so that whether we live or die we’ll live together with Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 5:1-10

1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of 1 Thessalonians. Paul reminds us to be on guard watching and waiting for the return of Christ. Help us to be sober and watchful awaiting His return. Help us to robe ourselves as soldiers in the army of God. Help us to study Your Word so we won’t be caught unaware. Convict those who aren’t yet children of the light so they might repent and turn to You before it’s too late. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Get Wisdom” (Proverbs 4:1-13)

Get Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 4:1-13. Solomon says, “Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and listen to learn understanding. I give you good instruction, don’t forsake my direction.”

I was my father’s son, tender and beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me well, and said to me, Let your heart attain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

Get wisdom, get understanding: don’t forget it; don’t stray from the words of my mouth.

Don’t abandon wisdom, she will protect you: love her, and she will keep you.

Wisdom is the first thing; so acquire wisdom: and with all your acquisitions get intelligence.

Exalt wisdom, and it will promote you: it will bring you honor, when you embrace it.

Wisdom will give to your head a wreath of favor: it will give you a crown of glory.

Listen, my son, and receive my words; and you will add many years to your life.

Solomon says, “I have taught you the ways of wisdom; I have led you on the right paths. When you go, your steps won’t be distressed; and when you run, you won’t fall.”

Hold on to instruction; don’t let go: guard her; she is your life.

As children, our parents taught us many things. It is important that we pass down the wisdom of our parents to our children.

As we learned earlier in Proverbs, wisdom comes from the LORD. We need to pass down what we have learned from the Bible to our children as well. Much of what is taught in Proverbs are good godly principles to live our lives by.

In this Scripture, Solomon is trying to impress the importance of holding on to the wisdom that he has been taught by his father as his way of life. He knows the dangers of straying from the ways of the LORD. He wants his son to live a good life, as we wish for our children and grandchildren as well.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 4:1-13

1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.
12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

Things to think about:

What is the importance of wisdom in our lives?
What is the importance of passing down wisdom to our children?
What is the importance of understanding?
How can we get wisdom?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we learn the importance of attaining wisdom and abiding by what we learn. Help us to make wise decisions. Help us to pass down the wisdom we have learned in this life to our children and grandchildren. Guard our hearts and minds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Proverbs of Solomon” (Proverbs 1:1-7)

The Proverbs of Solomon

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 1:1-7. The book of Proverbs was primarily written by Solomon, the son of King David. It is thought that Solomon collected these proverbs to pass down to his son to help him learn wisdom from his experiences.

This book is filled with words of wisdom and instruction to help those who read it to acquire a disciplined and wise life. It is meant to help us learn to do what is right, just, and fair.

The Proverbs were used by fathers in the Old Testament days to help teach their children knowledge and discretion. The wise were to listen to the words of Proverbs and add their own experiences as they taught their children. It was used to give guidance and understanding concerning the proverbs and parables – the sayings and riddles of the wise.

Proverbs are not the same as promises. Proverbs are general observations made by wise men. They may not always prove to be true in your situation, but generally are true. A promise is a particular obligation from a certain person.

Sometimes people take the Proverbs out of context and try to use them as promises of God. We need to remember that this is not how they are intended as we study the book of Proverbs.

In Old Testament times it was primarily the father’s duty to instruct the children in the Torah and the ways of God. They were to pass down the knowledge of God’s Word from generation to generation.

As parents it is our responsibility to teach our children about the Bible and how to live a good, godly life. That doesn’t mean that they are always going to listen and abide by everything we teach them, but it is our duty to make sure they know right from wrong.

Proverbs 10:1 tells us, “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.”

My favorite verse from this passage is Proverbs 1:7 which says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

This means submission to the will of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Fools are those who reject wisdom and discipline.

The word fool is used in Proverbs and other places in the Old Testament of the Bible to mean one who lacks morals.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 1:1-7

1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

What are some of the things we will learn from the book of Proverbs?
What was the primary use of the book of Proverbs in Old Testament days?
What does the Scripture say about the fear of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,
As we read this Scripture and study the book of Proverbs help us to learn the lessons of this book. Help us to learn to be wise, disciplined and to have discretion in the decisions we make in life. Help us to always do what is right, just, and fair. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
