Daily Bible Reading “God of Salvation” (Psalm 68:20-35)

God of Salvation

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:20-35. David acknowledges that our God is the God of salvation. He declares God will wound the head of His enemies. David reminds us that the Lord says He will gather His people together.

David talks about how the people praised God by singing and playing instruments. There were even dancers playing tambourines. This was a great celebration. There were rulers, princes, and councilmen present. David says because of the temple at Jerusalem, kings will bring presents. What happened when Jesus was born? Didn’t they bring presents?

Princes will come out of Egypt and Ethiopia will stretch out its hand to God. We need to pray for the whole world that people will come to God, for He is the God of Israel and He is our God. He gives strength and power to His people. Are you a child of God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:20-35

20 He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.
21 But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses.
22 The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea:
23 That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thine enemies, and the tongue of thy dogs in the same.
24 They have seen thy goings, O God; even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.
25 The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.
26 Bless ye God in the congregations, even the Lord, from the fountain of Israel.
27 There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their council, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.
28 Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us.
29 Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.
30 Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war.
31 Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.
32 Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:
33 To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.
34 Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.
35 O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.

Things to think about:

Have you accepted the salvation of God?
In what ways do you share the Gospel with others?
Do you enjoy singing and praising God? If you don’t sing, what are some other ways you praise God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. Thank You that You are the God of our salvation. Help us to show our love and gratitude to You for who You are and for all You have done for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD” (Psalm 68:8-19)

Blessed Be the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:8-19. In this Scripture David is remembering the things the LORD has done for him in the past. Do you ever look back and think about the things God has done for you? When you are feeling discouraged, this is a good thing to do to remind yourself how much God loves you.

David remembers God displaying His presence. He speaks of God sending the rain to confirm their inheritance when they were weary. Do you thank God for the rain? If there was no rain, we would have a famine. The rain helps the trees, flowers, grass, and crops to grow.

God’s Word is used to share the Gospel with others. His Word can heal those who have a broken heart. It can take those who are the least among the least and transform their lives.

There are other mountains taller than Mount Sinai, but God chose it as His mount. In the same way, God chooses people who may not be well-known to share the Gospel with others, and exalts them above those who are famous.

Exodus 19:18 tells us that the LORD descended upon Mount Sinai in fire: and it smoke as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked.

David refers to Jesus when He talks about the ascension. This is also referred to in Ephesians 4:8-10 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)”

David acknowledges God as the God of our salvation. It is God who blesses us with blessings, both eternally and every day.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:8-19

8 The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain, whereby thou didst confirm thine inheritance, when it was weary.
10 Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.
11 The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.
12 Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.
13 Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
14 When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon.
15 The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan; an high hill as the hill of Bashan.
16 Why leap ye, ye high hills? this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.
17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

What are some times in your life when you remember God’s blessings?
What are some things you are thankful to God for on a daily basis?
What are some things we can do to show our gratitude to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. David reminds us of times when You made Your presence known. He also reminds us of the many blessings You have given us. Help us to always remember and be grateful for all your blessings. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let God Arise” (Psalm 68:1-7)

Let God Arise

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:1-7. Psalm 68 is a Psalm of David to the chief Musician. This is thought to be a dedication to Jerusalem. David starts by saying, “Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered.” Have you let God arise in your life?

David declares let those who hate God flee, as the smoke is driven away let them go away, even as wax melts by fire, so will the wicked perish at the presence of God. The righteous will be glad and rejoice before God. They will sing praises to God and rejoice exceedingly.

David reminds us that God is a father to the fatherless. If you are fatherless, remember, God loves you and He is there for you. When I lost my father, I was devastated for a long time. God comforted me. I knew that I could go to Him anytime, day or night, with my concerns. He has always been there for me.

God is a judge to widows; God loves you and is near to you; when you are lonely, call on Him. God puts those who are alone in families. He brings out those who are in chains, but the rebellious live in a dry land. Rebelling against God can leave you in a dry land, far from God, where nothing is blessed.

When the Israelis were in the wilderness, God went before them and led them through the wilderness. Have you noticed God leading you throughout your life?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:1-7

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm [or] Song of David.]] Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.
2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.
6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
7 O God, when thou wentest forth before thy people, when thou didst march through the wilderness; Selah:

Things to think about:

In what ways have you allowed God to arise in your life?
How can God be a father to the fatherless?
Have you accepted God as your Heavenly Father?
What is your favorite song to sing when you are singing praises to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. David declares, “Let God arise.” Help us to let You arise in our lives. He talks about how the enemy is driven away from You and melts like wax. Please drive the enemy away from us and protect us from his snares. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Be Merciful to Us” (Psalm 67:1-7

God Be Merciful to Us

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 67:1-7. Psalm 67 is a Psalm to the Chief Musician. The Psalmist calls out to God to be merciful to us, bless us, and cause His face to shine on us. So His ways will be known on the earth and His saving grace to all nations.

He encourages us over and over to sing and praise God. He acknowledges that God is a righteous judge who governs all the nations of the world. He says when we praise God the earth will prosper and God will bless us. What are some ways we can praise God?

I love singing Christian songs of praise to God. Studying His Word and learning His ways are a way of honoring and praising Him as well. Praying and staying in communication with God is a way of showing respect and praise to Him. Sharing the Gospel with others is a way of serving God. How do you honor, praise, and serve God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 67:1-7

1 [[To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song.]] God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.
2 That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
3 Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.
5 Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
6 Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.
7 God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

How has God been merciful to you?
What are some blessings for which you can praise God?
In what ways do you praise God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 67. The Psalmist exhorts us to sing and praise You. He reminds us that You are a righteous judge who will judge all the nations. Help us to praise and serve You in a way that will be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Parable of the Talents” (Matthew 25:14-30)

Parable of the Talents

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:14-30. In this Scripture, Jesus is telling the disciples another parable about the kingdom of heaven. He says it is like a man who was traveling to a far country.

The man called his servants and gave them his goods to keep until he returned. He gave each one of them according to their ability. One he gave five talents, one two, and one he gave one talent. What do you think the servants did with their talents while the man was gone?

A talent was made of silver and each one weighed fifty to eighty pounds. When the man returned he found the man who had five talents doubled his, the one who had two talents doubled his, but, the one who had only one talent buried his talent in the ground. Why do you think he buried it in the ground?

He said he was afraid, so instead of taking what his lord gave him and trying to make more with it, he hid it in the ground. Isn’t it funny how we let fear cripple us?

The man was happy with the ones who doubled their talents and told them he would give them more. But the one who buried his displeased the lord.

So, the Lord told his servants to take his talent from him and give it to the one who had ten talents. Then he wanted them to cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness.

Remember, this is a parable about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus went away and He is coming back someday. He left each one of His servants with talents and we’ll all be accountable to Him for how we use those talents. Everything we have He provided and every gift we have He gave us. So, we need to make sure we are using our money, our time, and our talents in a way that will honor Him when He returns.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:14-30

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Things to think about:

Which of the men were most responsible with their talents?
Which of the men were least responsible with their talents?
What did the man do with the one who was least responsible?
How are you using the talents God has given you for Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this parable of the talents, help us examine ourselves and see how we are using what You have given to us. Help us to use what you have provided for us wisely, so at Jesus’ return, He’ll be pleased with us. Help us to not be hearers of the Word only, but doers of the Word, as well. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD, Amen.
