I will Praise the Name of God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 69:29-36. Earlier in the chapter, David was very sad and cried out to God to deliver him. Now, he is at a point of praising God. David says, “I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.” Have you noticed when you are going through a tough time, if you start to praise God it will lift your spirits?

David says that praising God will please the LORD more than if he had sacrificed an ox. Those who witness him praising God will be made glad also. When you praise God in spite of the storms in your life it is a witness to others. Not only will it encourage you, but it will encourage others as well. Make a choice to praise God no matter what the circumstances of life bring.

David proclaims, “Let everything in the heavens and earth praise God.” David declares that God will save Zion and will build it up again so His people can inherit it. David reminds us of the promises of God to His people.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 69:29-36

29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33 For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.
34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it: and they that love his name shall dwell therein.

Things to think about:

Have you noticed how praising God lifts your spirit?
How often do you spend time praising God?
What are some things for which we can praise God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 69. We see that even though David was in a time of much sorrow, he chose to praise You. Help us to follow his example and praise You in spite of our circumstances. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear Me, O LORD” (Psalm 69:13-28)

Hear Me, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 69:13-28. Psalm 69 is a Psalm of David. David is crying out to God to hear his prayer and deliver him from his enemies. David found no one to comfort him or have pity on him. The only person he had to turn to was God. Have you ever been in that position?

David knew there were people who hated him. He begged God to help him in his time of despair. He asked God to deliver him from his enemies. David knew God loved him and he desired to have God’s hand of protection over him. He knew that God was a kind, loving, merciful God. Is this the God you serve?

David’s heart was broken. He had experienced shame, reproach, and dishonor. David asked God to punish his enemies for the way they treated him.

Quotes from this chapter are often used when referring to Jesus. He was given vinegar to drink on the cross, which was recorded in Matthew 27. He suffered and died for us. How do the sacrifices we make in life for Him compare to what He did for us? Most of us could say they pale in comparison.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 69:13-28

13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.
14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15 Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.
16 Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.
17 And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.
18 Draw nigh unto my soul, and redeem it: deliver me because of mine enemies.
19 Thou hast known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.
24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.
25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
26 For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom thou hast wounded.
27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

Things to think about:

How many times in your life have you been in the position David was in?
How has God brought you out of the troubled times of your life?
Do you always go to God in prayer when you are in despair, or do you try to handle matters on your own?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 69. David was zealous for You. He loved You and called out to You often for help in his despair. Help us to know that You love us and care about what we are going through. Help us not to be afraid to come to You with our cares and concerns of this life. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Save Me, O God” (Psalm 69:1-12)

Save Me, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 69:1-12. Psalm 69 is a Psalm of David, a Psalm of the sufferer. David was distraught. He cried out to God, “Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.” Have you ever felt as David did?

David was in despair. He cried so much that his throat hurt and he couldn’t see through his eyes because of the tears flowing down his face. David’s enemies were numerous, more than the hairs on his head. Have you ever been through a time in your life when all you could do is cry out to God?

David doesn’t claim to be perfect. He acknowledges that God knows his sins. We can’t hide our sins from God. He knows everything about us. We may try to hide our shortcomings from people, but we can’t hide them from God.

David declares that he bore reproach for God’s sake. Sometimes God allows us to be in a situation that is beyond us so we can lean on Him and show glory to His name through our reaction to our difficult circumstances.

David says he has become a stranger to his brothers. The enemy loves to try to destroy families and their relationships with each other through circumstances that pit family members against each other. But God can heal the hurts of our hearts if we are willing to turn them over to Him.

David reveals that people were talking bad about him in the streets. Has anyone ever gossiped about you? How did that make you feel?

Some of these same Scriptures are referred to in the life of Jesus Christ. He suffered more than any of us ever have. Jesus was despised and rejected. His closest followers betrayed Him. When we are suffering, let’s draw strength from the life of Jesus Christ. Let’s do as He did by turning our cares and concerns over to our Heavenly Father.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 69:1-12

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, [A Psalm] of David.]] Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.
2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.
6 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.
7 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.
8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.
9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.
10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

Things to think about:

Name some times in your life when all you could do was call out to God.
How did you know that God heard your cries?
In what ways did God give you the strength to go through the situation?
How can looking back at the difficult times give us strength for today?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 69. David was distraught. He was crying out to You for help. His enemies were coming against him. Help us to call out to You when we are in trouble. Help us to know we can count on You to see us through the difficult times in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God of Salvation” (Psalm 68:20-35)

God of Salvation

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:20-35. David acknowledges that our God is the God of salvation. He declares God will wound the head of His enemies. David reminds us that the Lord says He will gather His people together.

David talks about how the people praised God by singing and playing instruments. There were even dancers playing tambourines. This was a great celebration. There were rulers, princes, and councilmen present. David says because of the temple at Jerusalem, kings will bring presents. What happened when Jesus was born? Didn’t they bring presents?

Princes will come out of Egypt and Ethiopia will stretch out its hand to God. We need to pray for the whole world that people will come to God, for He is the God of Israel and He is our God. He gives strength and power to His people. Are you a child of God?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:20-35

20 He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.
21 But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses.
22 The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea:
23 That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thine enemies, and the tongue of thy dogs in the same.
24 They have seen thy goings, O God; even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.
25 The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.
26 Bless ye God in the congregations, even the Lord, from the fountain of Israel.
27 There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their council, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.
28 Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us.
29 Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.
30 Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war.
31 Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.
32 Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:
33 To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.
34 Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.
35 O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.

Things to think about:

Have you accepted the salvation of God?
In what ways do you share the Gospel with others?
Do you enjoy singing and praising God? If you don’t sing, what are some other ways you praise God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. Thank You that You are the God of our salvation. Help us to show our love and gratitude to You for who You are and for all You have done for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD” (Psalm 68:8-19)

Blessed Be the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 68:8-19. In this Scripture David is remembering the things the LORD has done for him in the past. Do you ever look back and think about the things God has done for you? When you are feeling discouraged, this is a good thing to do to remind yourself how much God loves you.

David remembers God displaying His presence. He speaks of God sending the rain to confirm their inheritance when they were weary. Do you thank God for the rain? If there was no rain, we would have a famine. The rain helps the trees, flowers, grass, and crops to grow.

God’s Word is used to share the Gospel with others. His Word can heal those who have a broken heart. It can take those who are the least among the least and transform their lives.

There are other mountains taller than Mount Sinai, but God chose it as His mount. In the same way, God chooses people who may not be well-known to share the Gospel with others, and exalts them above those who are famous.

Exodus 19:18 tells us that the LORD descended upon Mount Sinai in fire: and it smoke as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked.

David refers to Jesus when He talks about the ascension. This is also referred to in Ephesians 4:8-10 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)”

David acknowledges God as the God of our salvation. It is God who blesses us with blessings, both eternally and every day.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 68:8-19

8 The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain, whereby thou didst confirm thine inheritance, when it was weary.
10 Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.
11 The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.
12 Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.
13 Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
14 When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon.
15 The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan; an high hill as the hill of Bashan.
16 Why leap ye, ye high hills? this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.
17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.
19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

Things to think about:

What are some times in your life when you remember God’s blessings?
What are some things you are thankful to God for on a daily basis?
What are some things we can do to show our gratitude to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 68. David reminds us of times when You made Your presence known. He also reminds us of the many blessings You have given us. Help us to always remember and be grateful for all your blessings. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. – Psalm 68:19
