Daily Bible Reading “How Long, O LORD” (Psalm 13:1-6)

How Long, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 13:1-6. Psalm 14 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David asks the question, “How long will you forget me, O LORD? Forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”

Have you ever felt like this? Have you felt like God has forgotten about you? Have you gone for a long time without hearing from God and felt like He hid His face from you?

We have to remember God hasn’t moved. Many times we have allowed something to get between us and God. We may not even realize it or know what it is. If you start feeling distant from God pray and ask God to enlighten you about the problem. He may reveal something to you that will help you get back in fellowship with Him.

David asks how long will his heart be sorrowful and his enemies have power over him. He asks God to hear his prayer and open his eyes in case the enemy overtakes him and kills him.

Even though David was in this situation he trusted in the mercy of God to care for him. Have you ever noticed during these low times in life often God deals with you and helps you to see the light?

David says his heart rejoices in the salvation of the LORD. He declares he will sing praise to God because God has dealt with him. Often in the low times of our life we realize how dependent we are on God. We realize how much we need Him in our lives.

David was in trouble and he called out to God to deliver him from the enemy. Many times we don’t have a physical enemy like David did, but we have a spiritual enemy who tries to discourage us and make us feel unworthy and unloved. If we keep our eyes on God, remembering how much He loves us, and keep singing praises to Him the cloud of life will rise and we’ll have victory over the enemy. Keep looking up my friends, God is on our side.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 13:1-6

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?
3 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;
4 Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.
5 But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.
6 I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.

 

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the times in your life when you felt God hid His face from you?
  • What can we do when we have these kinds of feelings in our hearts?
  • How do you show God you trust in His mercy?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to turn to You for guidance when we feel the enemy closing in on us and feel we are about to be defeated like David was. Help us to put our trust in Your mercy and know that You will work things out in our lives. Help us to keep singing praises to Your name even in the dark times of life. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Fool Says There Is No God” (Psalm 14:1-7)

  1. The Fool Says There Is No God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 14:1-7. Psalm 14 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David says, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” The Hebrew word for fool is “nabal.” There is actually a person in the Bible named Nabal who is mentioned in 1 Samuel 25. Can you imagine having a name that means fool?

Because of their unbelief fools live corrupt lives. They’ve done works that are an abomination to God. David said there were none who did good deeds. David is showing us the corruption of the world. We may feel like David is describing the world today, but the worst may be yet to come.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Romans 3:12 says, “They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”

Isaiah 64:6 reminds us, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

Those who don’t know God don’t know how to live right. They are ignorant of the ways of God. Even we, as people of faith, who do know God, struggle in this life to live righteously before God. Thank God for His Son, Jesus, who came and died to be the sacrifice for our sins.

The LORD looked down from heaven to earth on all of humanity to see if there were any who understood, and sought after God. When He looked down He saw that they had all turned aside, and had become morally corrupt. He discovered that there were none who were doing good, not even one. How do you think this made the LORD feel?

David asks God if all the evildoers were ignorant. David said, the evil eat God’s people like they eat bread and don’t even call on the name of the LORD. They shamed the counsel of the poor. The LORD is the refuge of those who believe in Him. He is our protector, our shelter from danger, our provider.

David’s heart’s cry was that the salvation of the LORD would have come out of Zion. He declared that Jacob will rejoice and all of Israel will celebrate when the LORD brings back the captivity of His people to Jerusalem.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 14:1-7

1 [To the chief Musician, [A Psalm of David.]] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

 

Things to think about:

  • Who is considered to be a fool according to this Scripture?
  • What did the LORD see when He looked down from heaven?
  • What will cause rejoicing as mentioned in verse seven?
  • Have you put your faith and trust in God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We learn that those who say there is no God are fools. Help us to know that You are the only one, true God. Help us to have faith and trust in You. Help us to find refuge in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book will contain approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

Daily Bible Reading “Help, LORD” (Psalm 12:1-8)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 12:1-8. Psalm 12 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician on Sheminith, an eight-stringed instrument.

Some biblical scholars think this may be a prophetic psalm, speaking about the end of time. Does any of this sound familiar as you look around the world we live in today?

David cries out to God for help saying that godly men die off. He declares that the faithful have vanished from the children of men.

He says they are double-tongued. They speak flattering words and talk about proud things. David says the LORD will cut off those who are bold enough to declare who we should accept as lord, or ruler, over us.

The LORD says he will protect the poor and needy from the proud. David declares that the words of the LORD are pure, as pure as silver that is refined in an earthen vessel seven times. David cries out to the LORD to preserve them from the wicked that are all around them from his generation forward.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 12:1-8

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.]] Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

 

Things to think about:

  • What was David’s concern in this Scripture?
  • What does David say about the words of the LORD?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for protecting the poor and needy. Help us to be faithful. Help us to be careful what we say. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is My Refuge” (Psalm 11:1-7)

The LORD is my Refuge

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 11:1-7. Psalm 11 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David declares that he puts his trust in the LORD. David was being told to flee like a bird to his mountain. Do you ever feel like flying away like a bird?

The wicked were getting their bow and arrows ready and many were afraid that the king would be killed. They encouraged him to take refuge in the mountains. They wanted him to hide out. They asked what the righteous can do if the foundations were destroyed.

David put his faith and trust in the LORD. The LORD is his refuge. David declares that the LORD is in His holy temple. He is still on the throne. The LORD may try, or judge, the righteous, but He hates wickedness and violence. God will rain fire and brimstone on the wicked.

The LORD loves the righteous and holds the upright with His countenance. We can put our complete faith and trust in God, as David did.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 11:1-7

1 [[To the chief Musician, [A Psalm] of David.]] In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?
2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.
3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?
4 The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.
7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

 

Things to think about:

  • What were David’s advisers telling him to do?
  • What was David’s response to them?
  • What does David say the LORD will do to the wicked?
  • Who is it that the LORD loves?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. David reminds us to put our faith and trust in You when the enemy comes against us. Help us to know that if You are on our side we can never be defeated. Help us to put our faith and trust in You as David did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is King” (Psalm 10:1-18)

The LORD is King

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 10:1-18. The Psalmist asks God why He is standing far off from him. He asks the LORD why He is hiding in times of trouble. Have you ever felt like the LORD was far away from you during times of trouble?

The Psalmist tells us about the wicked. It is even believed by biblical scholars that he may be talking about the anti-Christ. But, we may also see the attributes of the wicked in people today.

You will notice that the Psalmist says the wicked are proud and boast about themselves. The wicked don’t seek after God. They don’t believe in God. Many of them even despise God.

The Psalmist cries out for the LORD to arise and defeat the wicked. He declares that the LORD is King forever and ever.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 10:1-18

1 Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.
4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.
6 He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.
7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.
9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.
10 He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.
11 He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.
12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.
13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.
14 Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.
16 The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.
17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:
18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

 

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the attributes of the wicked?
  • As Christians, in what can we take hope according to this Scripture?
  • How can we use this Scripture to discern between those who are wicked and those who aren’t?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. It helps us to see what the wicked are like. We thank You that we can count on You to defeat the wicked ones. We can find hope in knowing that You are the King forever and ever. Help us to have discernment concerning those who are wicked. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
