Help, LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 12:1-8. Psalm 12 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician on Sheminith, an eight-stringed instrument.

Some biblical scholars think this may be a prophetic psalm, speaking about the end of time. Does any of this sound familiar as you look around the world we live in today?

David cries out to God for help saying that godly men die off. He declares that the faithful have vanished from the children of men.

He says they are double-tongued. They speak flattering words and talk about proud things. David says the LORD will cut off those who are bold enough to declare who we should accept as lord, or ruler, over us.

The LORD says he will protect the poor and needy from the proud. David declares that the words of the LORD are pure, as pure as silver that is refined in an earthen vessel seven times. David cries out to the LORD to preserve them from the wicked that are all around them from his generation forward.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 12:1-8

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.]] Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for protecting the poor and needy. Help us to be faithful. Help us to be careful what we say. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

God Help Me

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 88:1-18. Psalm 88 is a Psalm to the chief Musician for the sons of Korah. In this Psalm the Psalmist reminds God he has cried out to Him day and night. The Psalmist acknowledges God as the God of his salvation. He begged God to hear his prayer. He has seen so much trouble he is distraught. He pleads for God to help him.

The Psalmist is at the end of himself. He was desperate for God to intervene in the situation. He doesn’t know what else to do. The affliction of his body has robbed him of his strength, so much so that he felt like a he was about to be a dead man. He had suffered with these afflictions since his youth. He is tired and worn out.

His friends and acquaintances have deserted him. He questions God as to why He has poured His wrath out on him and asks God if the dead will praise Him? Have you felt desperate for God to hear and answer your prayers?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 88:1-18

1 [A Song [or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite.]] O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:
2 Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;
3 For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
4 I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength:
5 Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.
7 Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.
8 Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
9 Mine eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands unto thee.
10 Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.
11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction?
12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.
14 LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me?
15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.
16 Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off.
17 They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.
18 Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

Things to think about:

Have you ever felt like God deserted you? When?
What are some times in your life when you wondered if God heard your prayers?
In what ways have you felt weak in the struggles of this life?
How often do you bring your cares and concerns to God in prayer?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 88. In this Psalm we see that this man was desperate for You to help him. Even through all his trouble he still prayed to you day and night. Help us not to grow weary in this troubled world, but to continually seek Your face for help in our times of trouble. Help us to find comfort and solitude in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
