Moses Stood in the Gap

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 106:13-23. How often do we forget the works of the LORD? The Psalmist tells us the Israelites soon forgot all the works the LORD did for them, neither did they wait for His counsel. God did so much for them, but they turned their backs on Him.

In the wilderness they lusted and tempted God. He gave them what they wanted, but their souls suffered the consequences. They didn’t obey the leadership of Moses nor the counsel of Aaron, who God gave authority to lead them through the wilderness.

They saw the LORD do all kinds of wondrous works, and meet their every need, yet they rebelled. They made a molten image of a calf and worshiped it when Moses was later than they expected returning from the mountain where he’d gone to meet with God to receive His law. They forgot the LORD and all the great things He had done.

The LORD was so upset with them He wanted to destroy them. He would’ve destroyed them had Moses not begged for God’s mercy on the people. Moses stood in the gap for them to keep God from pouring His wrath out on them.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 106:13-23

13 They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

16 They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.

18 And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

21 They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Things to think about:

What did the Israelites do that showed they turned their backs on God?
How often do we forget all the good God has done for us?
Has anyone ever stood in the gap for you?
Have you ever stood in the gap for someone else?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 106 where the Psalmist reminds us to remember Your works and not to turn our backs on You. Thank You for the people You put in our lives to guide us along the way, as you did Moses and Aaron for the Israelites. Help us not to ever turn our back on You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. Daily Bible Reading “His Mercy Endures Forever” (Psalm 106:1-12)

His Mercy Endures Forever

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 106:1-12. The Psalmist starts this Psalm thanking and praising the LORD for His goodness and mercy, which endures forever.

He says, those who keep the LORD’S judgment and are righteous all the time are blessed. How many of us fit into that category? We all fall short from time to time in spite of our best efforts.

The Psalmist cries out to the LORD to remember him with the favor He bestows upon His children. The Psalmist begs the LORD to visit him with His salvation. He wants to see the good in God’s chosen people. He wants to be able to rejoice in the gladness of His nation and glory with His inheritance.

The Psalmist confesses to the LORD that they have sinned against Him and have done wickedly like their fathers. He recounts how their ancestors didn’t understand the wondrous works of the LORD in Egypt. Nor did they remember how merciful God was to them.

They provoked the LORD at the Red Sea when Moses led them out of Egypt, but He still saved them for His sake. He made His mighty power known by causing the Red Sea to part and allowing the Israelites to walk through on dry land. He saved them from the enemy when he rolled the Red Sea back over them (Exodus 14).

Not one of their enemies was left standing. As the Israelites marveled at His wondrous works they believed His words and sang His praises (Exodus 15:1). What does God have to do to get our attention and cause us to believe His Word and praise His holy name?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 106:1-12

1 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Who can utter the mighty acts of the LORD? who can shew forth all his praise?
3 Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.
4 Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;
5 That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.
6 We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.
9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.
10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
11 And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.
12 Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

Things to think about:

Have you considered how merciful and good God is?
How many times has God shown mercy toward you?
How do you respond when God is merciful to you?
Has God ever brought you through a situation that in the end you knew He was the LORD of your life?
In what ways can we thank God and praise Him for His goodness and mercy toward us?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the Scripture in Psalm 106 where the Psalmist reminds us of Your goodness and mercy toward us. Help us to worship and praise You for Your mercy which endures forever. Help us to be obedient to Your Word and forgive us of all the times we have failed You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
