Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Tempted by the Devil” (Matthew 4:1-11)

Jesus Tempted by the Devil

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 4:1-11. In this Scripture, Jesus was led by the Spirit to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and nights, and then He was hungry. Wouldn’t you be hungry if you fasted forty days and nights? Of course you would.

The devil knew Jesus was hungry and tried to tempt Him to turn the rocks into bread, saying, “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Jesus answers him by quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” This was a physical temptation. This is the same temptation Satan used against Eve in the garden.

Then in Matthew 4:5 the devil takes Jesus to the holy city, and sets him on a pinnacle of the temple and tells him to cast himself down. Jesus quotes Psalm 91:11-12, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in (their) hands, lest thy dash thy foot against a stone.” This is a spiritual temptation for the pride of life.

In Matthew 4:8 the devil takes Jesus to a high mountain and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. Then he tells Jesus he’ll give Him all this if He worships him. Again, Jesus answers him with Scripture. This is a psychological temptation. This time Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13 and Deuteronomy 10:20. Jesus tells Satan, “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Here we see Jesus basically tells him to get away and leave Him alone. Sometimes we need to do that as well.

Notice every time the devil tempts Jesus, He quotes Scripture. This is why we need to read and study the Bible, so when temptation comes our way we can say this is what the Word of God says. We see also the same ways the enemy tempted Jesus are the ways he tries to tempt us. So, we need to be ready with our armor of Scripture to defend ourselves.

After the devil leaves Jesus, the angels came and ministered to Him. We can also use the Scripture to minister to ourselves and to give us comfort when we have a bout with the enemy.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 4:1-11

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Things to think about:

Have you ever fasted? If so, for how long?
Can you imagine how hungry Jesus must have been after fasting for forty days and nights?
Have you ever tried quoting Scripture when the enemy tempted you?
I challenge you to use the Scripture when temptation comes.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this example in Your Word of how we are to handle temptation. When we are tempted help us to recall the Scripture to respond to our tempter. Help us to not let anything come before You. We love you, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus talks to the Sadducees and Pharisees” (Matthew 22:23-46)

Jesus talks to the Sadducees and Pharisees

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 22:23-46. In this Scripture, the Sadducees came to Jesus and asked Him about the Law of Moses which said if a man dies and has no children his brother should marry his wife and have children with her as seed for his brother.

They tell Jesus this ridiculous story of seven brothers, how the first one married, then died and left his wife to his brother. This happened until the wife had been passed down to all seven brothers, then the woman died.

Then they ask Jesus, “In the resurrection, whose wife will she be?” Jesus tells them they don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God, for in the resurrection, there will be no marriage, and they’ll be as the angels of God. Jesus informs them concerning the resurrection, that God isn’t the God of the dead, but is the God of the living. With His response He silenced the Sadducees.

The Pharisees came asking Jesus what was the greatest commandment? Jesus told them, in Matthew 22:37-40, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Before they could ask him any more questions, Jesus asked them, “Whose son do you think Christ is?” They responded, “The Son of David.” Jesus asks them then why does David call him Lord, if he is his son? Jesus is referring back to Psalm 110:1, which says, “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

Jesus was pointing them to His virgin birth by making them think about whose Son He was. In the last verse of this chapter it says that no man was able to ask Him any more questions from that day forward.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 22:23-46

23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
27 And last of all the woman died also.
28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Things to think about:

What was Jesus’ response to them concerning the woman with seven husbands?

What does Jesus say is the most important commandment?

What does Jesus say the second most important commandment is?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

In this Scripture, Jesus reminds us of the first two commandments. The first one, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second one, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Help us to do both of these. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Tells Parables” (Matthew 21:28-46)

Jesus Tells Parables

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 21:28-46. In this Scripture, Jesus tells two parables. In the first parable, He tells about a man who had two sons whom he asked to go work in his vineyard. The first son said no, but later repented and went. The second son said he would go, but didn’t. Which one obeyed his father? Look at Jesus’ response in Matthew 21:31-32. Which son are you?

Then in Matthew 21:33, Jesus starts to tell them another parable: about a man who planted a vineyard and went to a far country and left another to attend to it. When it was time for the fruit to be harvested he sent his servants to collect the profits. The servants in return were beaten, stoned, and killed. He sent more servants and the workers at the vineyard did the same thing to them. Then the owner of the vineyard sent his son, thinking he would be respected, but he was killed for the inheritance.

Read Matthew 21:42-44 to see what Jesus’ response to them was about this parable. This parable is a picture of how God sent His people prophets and teachers before Jesus, but the people didn’t listen, instead, destroyed the prophets and teachers. Then God sent Jesus, His Son, and the people killed Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 21:28-46

28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

Things to think about:

What do you gather from these parables?

In the first parable, did either son obey his father’s request?

In the second parable, why do people find it so hard to trust?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for all the people You sent into this world to tell us about You. Please forgive us for where we failed You. Help us to do Your will. Thank You especially for Your Son, Jesus, who came into this world and died on the cross for our sins, that we might have eternal life with You in heaven. Help those who haven’t accepted Him yet to open their hearts and minds to You and grasp the wonderful gift You offered to us all, if we only believe. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Curses the Fig Tree” (Matthew 21:18-27)

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 21:18-27. In this Scripture, Jesus came into the city, and was hungry. He saw a fig tree, but there was no fruit, so Jesus cursed the tree by saying there would be no fruit growing on it forever. Then the fig tree withered away. Why do you think Jesus caused the fig tree to wither? It reminds me of when Jesus is talking about the vine and the branches and He says, if the branch isn’t bearing fruit, cut it off.

The disciples saw it and were amazed. Jesus tells them, “If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.”

Let’s take a look at Mark 11:23: “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

This Scripture basically says the same thing. Then Jesus tells them that whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive. After reading this Scripture, do you wonder what our problem is; that we don’t ask or we don’t believe?

This reminds me of one of my favorite Scriptures on this matter of asking God and praying to our Heavenly Father for our needs: Matthew 7:7-11

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye Then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

When Jesus went to the temple the chief priests and elders asked Him by what authority He did these things. Jesus responded to them with a question instead of answering them directly, Is the baptism of John from heaven or man?” They said they couldn’t say, and Jesus told them neither could He tell them by whose authority He did these things.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 21:18-27

18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Things to think about:

Do you believe you will receive whatever you ask of God?

Do you ask God to meet your needs?

Can you think of a time in your life when you asked, believed, and received what you asked?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture that shows us you gave Your Son, Jesus, the authority to perform miracles on earth. Help us to have the faith we need to ask anything we need of You and believe we’ll receive it. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.
