A Friend Love at All Times

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 17:15-21. My favorite verse from this Scripture is found in verse 17, “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

People who justify the wicked and those who condemn the just are both an abomination to the LORD.

Is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, since they have no desire for it?

A person void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes security in the presence of their friend.

Those who love rebellion love strife: and those who exalt their doorway seek destruction.

Those who have a crooked heart find no good: and those who have a perverted tongue fall into mischief.

Those who bear a fool do it to their sorrow: and the parents of a fool have no joy.

One of the great friendships of the Bible is revealed in 1 Samuel 18:3, “Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.” They made sacrifices for one another. They also protected one another.

To have a true friendship you have to make sacrifices for each other. Building a friendship and a relationship takes time and effort. You have to show that you care about the other person and their needs, not just your own needs and desires.

The greatest friendship of all is found in the relationship that we can have with Jesus Christ. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus demonstrated what it meant to be a true friend. He made the ultimate sacrifice. He gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 17:15-21

15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

Things to think about:

Who does this Scripture say are an abomination to the LORD?
What does it mean to be a true friend?
Do you have someone who you would call your best friend? What makes your relationship so special?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this Scripture we are reminded that a friend loves at all times. Help us to be this kind of friend. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who laid down His life for His friends. Help us to show Your love to our friends. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

A Gift is Like a Precious Stone

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 17:8-14. In this Scripture, we are reminded that a gift is like a precious stone in the eyes of those who have it: where ever it turns, it prospers.

Those who cover a transgression seek love; but those who repeat a matter separate best friends.

A rebuke enters more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

An evil person seeks rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against them.

Let a bear robbed of her whelps encounter a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

Evil will not depart from the house of those who reward evil for good.

The beginning of strife is like water that bursts forth: so forsake controversy, before it is exposed.

We are told that a gift is like a precious stone. How does it make you feel when someone gives you a gift? Do you treasure the gift as if it were a precious stone?

The greatest gift of all is the gift of salvation. God sacrificed His only Son, Jesus, on the cross in order to offer us salvation from our sins. If a gift is like a precious stone, how can we ever put a value on the most precious gift of all? How can we show our gratitude for this gift?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 17:8-14

10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

Things think about:

What is a gift compared to in this Scripture?
What do evil people seek?
What happens to those who reward evil with good?
Have you accepted God’s precious gift of salvation? If so, how do you show your appreciation to God for the gift?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read and study this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that a gift is like a precious stone. The greatest gift of all is the gift of salvation. Thank You for the sacrifice that was made on the cross for our salvation. Help us to show our love and appreciation for this gift. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Little is Much” (Proverbs 17:1-7)

Little is Much

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 17:1-7. In this Scripture, we are reminded that it is better to have a dry morsel of bread, and have peace and quiet, than a full house of sacrifices with strife.

A wise servant will have rule over a child that causes shame, and will have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD tries our hearts.

A wicked person listens to lies; and a liar listens to a naughty tongue.

Whoever mocks the poor reproaches their Maker: and those who are happy about calamities will not go unpunished.

Grandchildren are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

Excellent speech does not become a fool: neither does lying lips become a prince.

We are reminded in this Scripture that it is better to have a little and live in peace than to have a lot and live in strife. Many times we put so much emphasis on getting things that it causes strife in our homes. The truth is we would be happier and live more peaceful with less.

We cause ourselves so much stress trying to keep up with other people. If we would learn to live within our means we would be happier and not be so stressed out because we are having trouble making ends meet.

Have you ever known somebody who never seemed to be content? They seem to always want something and are never satisfied no matter how much they attain. Have you ever noticed the more you attain the more responsibility you have to take care of it all. Don’t get me wrong, I like nice things, but sometimes we never seem to be satisfied.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (1 Timothy 6:6-8).

This Scripture reminds us that if our basic needs are taken care of we should be satisfied. But, for many of us that is not enough. We are always striving to attain more. Why can’t we learn to be content with what we have?

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 17:1-7

1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

As we read and study this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded that it is better to have a little and have peace than to have a lot and live in strife. Help us to be content and grateful for what we have. Help us to live peaceful lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
