Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Numbers 11. This lesson is about the children of Israel during the time when they were wandering in the wilderness. God met their needs for food, but they still complained. His provision wasn’t good enough for them. Are we ever guilty of doing the same thing, instead of thanking God for what He is providing? Notice how it made God feel when the children of Israel complained. Verse 1 says His anger was kindled against them. I never considered the fact that it angered God when I complained, have you?

Sometimes God provides for us, but we aren’t happy with what or how He provides. We want what we want and we want it now. We don’t consider that what we’re asking for might not be good for us. We don’t consider that the time might not be right for us to have what we’re wanting.

Sometimes we act like spoiled brats who always want their way. Can you imagine how it makes God feel when we act this way?
God gave the children of Israel manna to eat, but they weren’t satisfied.

They wanted meat to eat. The people complained. It angered the LORD and Moses was displeased with them as well. Be careful what you ask for, you might get it. The people wanted meat and the LORD caused so many quails to come the people were sickened by them.

Have you ever wanted something to eat really badly, then you ate too much of it and it made you sick to your stomach? Well, the children of Israel complained so much about not having meat, God gave them an overabundance of it to the point it made them sick.

Have you ever thought about how it makes God feel when we complain about the things He has provided for us? How much better do you think it makes Him feel when we give thanks to Him for what He has done for us? Instead of complaining about what we don’t have, maybe we should be more thankful for what we do have.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Numbers 11:1-10

1 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.
2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.
3 And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.
4 And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:
6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.
7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.
8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.
9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

Numbers 11:31-33

31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.
32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.
33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever stopped what you were doing to thank God?
  • What are some ways we can thank God for who He is?
  • In what ways can we show God we have an attitude of gratitude?
  • Are you in the habit of complaining?
  • Have you asked God to help change your attitude?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Numbers 11. We see where the children of Israel complained and it angered You. Please forgive us for complaining and help us to be more grateful. You have blessed us in so many ways. Thank You for everything You are to us and for everything You do for us. Mostly, we want to thank You for Your Son, Jesus who You sent to die for our sins. We love You LORD. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to the LORD for His Deliverance” (Psalm 140:1-13)

Give Thanks to the LORD for His Deliverance

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 140:1-13. Psalm 140 is a Psalm of David where he is asking the LORD to deliver him from the evil and violent man. David begs God to keep him and protect him from his enemies. He asks God for some pretty harsh punishment for his enemies.

We all, at one time or the other, need to be delivered from the hand of the enemy. No matter what the circumstances of your life are, God is able to deliver you from those circumstances and set your feet on the solid rock of His salvation. Thank God for His deliverance. Call out to the King of Kings and the LORD of Lords, as David did. God is there for you. He loves you. He cares about you and what you are going through.

If you are a Christian, you’ve been delivered from a life of sin. Some of us may have been deeper in sin than others, but in God’s eyes, there is no big sin and little sin. If we are disobedient, and rebel against God, that is considered sin.

David ends this Psalm by saying, “Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.” Once God has delivered us from sin and covered our sins with the blood of Jesus our past sins are forgiven. Forgiveness is something for which we can give thanks every day.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 140:1-13

1 [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
6 I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways have you been delivered from the enemy?
  • How do you thank the LORD for His deliverance?
  • Have you ever prayed and asked the LORD to deliver you from your enemies? If so, how did He answer your prayers?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We pray today, LORD, that You would deliver us and keep us from the hands of our enemy. We ask that You hear our supplications to You. For You, O LORD, are the strength of our salvation and we give thanks to Your holy name. Help us to dwell continuously in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Unto Thee, O God, Do We Give Thanks” (Psalm 75:1-10)

Unto Thee, O God, Do We Give Thanks

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 75:1-10. Psalm 75 is a Psalm of Asaph. It is a song to the director of music, to the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Asaph gives thanks to God for His name and His wondrous works. This Psalm is thought to possibly be a speech that was made when David was appointed governor and was then penned by Asaph.

David declared that he would do the job that was appointed for him to do and would judge the matters that were brought before him as governor. David took his duties seriously. He knew that God allowed him to be placed in a position of authority. He didn’t take the job lightly. He wanted God and the people to know he would do his best to serve those over whom he’d been given authority. David promised to do his duty and judge the people fairly.

God will receive the congregation of the church one day. God will not only welcome us into His kingdom, but we will stand before Him as a righteous judge. Sometimes people only think of God as a loving God. He is a loving God, but He is also the judge of the earth. How do you feel about standing before God as your judge?

He warned the wicked not to lift up their horn against God. He reminded the people that promotion doesn’t come from the east or west, but from God, who exalts some and brings down others. He declared that the horns of the wicked would be cut off and the righteous would be exalted. He proclaimed that he would sing praises to the God of Jacob forever. This meant that he would honor God forever as well. Do you enjoy singing praises to God and honoring Him as your heavenly Father?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 75:1-10

1 [[To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph.]] Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.
2 When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.
3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.
4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.
9 But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.

 

Things to think about:

  • Are you going to be among the righteous whom God exalts or the wicked He cuts off?
  • In what ways do you give thanks to God?
  • What are some things for which you thank God?
  • What are some ways you worship God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 75.We give You thanks, dear God, for everything You provide for us. You are a great God. You are a righteous judge. Help us to repent of our sins and cleanse our hearts so we can be part of the righteous You exalt and not the wicked You cut down. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for the Triumph We Have in Christ” (2 Corinthians 2)

Give Thanks to God for the

Triumph We Have in Christ

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Corinthians 2. Paul’s is trying to express to the people how much he loves them. He tries to encourage them that they can have triumph (victory) in Christ.

He tells them that if any have sinned and caused grief among them, if they repent and want to be a part of the church again, the church members should forgive and show love towards them.

Paul warns the people that Satan will use confusion to cause division among them. Then, in verse 14 Paul gives thanks to God for always causing us to triumph in Christ.  We can find victory in God, through Christ both in this life and in the life to come. God forgives us and loves us and we ought to do the same for each other.

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Corinthians 2:1-17

1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is [the joy of you all.
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways are you thankful for the victory we have in Christ?
  • How does un-forgiveness in your life affect you?
  • How does sin in your life affect you?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving us victory in Christ. Help us to forgive one another and to love one another, as You have forgiven and loved us. Help us to be on guard and not to let Satan get an advantage over us. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to the Father” (Colossians 1:1-29)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Colossians 1:1-29.

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you. – Colossians 1:3

Paul is writing to the church at Colossae. (Colossae was destroyed by an earthquake in the first century AD. The ruins are near the current city of Honaz in Turkey.)

Paul gives thanks to God for them and says he prays for them always. He talks about their faith in Jesus, hope in heaven and love for the saints. Paul prays for them that they will be filled with knowledge, wisdom and spiritual understanding.

What a beautiful model prayer for us. We should pray this prayer for our children, our fellow believers, our family, our friends and especially for ourselves that we might know the will of God. In verses 12 through 22 Paul gives a beautiful picture of Christ.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Colossians 1:1-29

1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,
2  To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3  We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
4  Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
5  For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
6  Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
7  As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled
22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:
25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you put your faith in Jesus? Why or why not?
  • In what ways do you give thanks to God for His blessings?
  • How does it make you feel when you read Paul’s letter?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the faith, hope and love we have in You. Thank You for the saints through the ages that passed down Your Word to us. Help us to be filled with knowledge of Your will, wisdom and spiritual understanding. Thank You for the redemption that we can have through your Son, Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of our sins. What a wonderful sacrifice He made for us. We love you, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
