Jesus Calms the Storm
Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 8:18-34. In this Scripture, Jesus saw great multitudes following Him so He told His disciples to depart to the other side of the lake.
He and His disciples entered a ship. Then there was a storm in the sea, but Jesus was asleep. The disciples woke Him up because they were afraid. The Scripture says He rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. Notice, all Jesus did was speak to the wind and sea and they became calm. The disciples were amazed, and said, “What manner of man is this that the winds and sea obey him?”
Have you ever gone through a storm in your life? Did you invite Jesus to get in the boat with you? Did you ask for His help? Sometimes we need to stop trying to handle everything on our own and ask Jesus to come and help us. He can calm the storm in your life, just as He calmed the storm for the disciples.
As they traveled on, they ran into two men who were possessed with demons. Jesus spoke to them and the devils were cast into the swine. I heard someone ask recently, “Should we be eating something that the Lord cast demons into?” That is something to think about.
Jesus spoke and these things happened, as God did when He created the world. In Genesis we read where God said, “Let there be,” and “there was.” How powerful!
Daily Bible Reading:
Matthew 8:18-34
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.
34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.
Things to think about:
- Can you imagine being on the ship with Jesus when He calmed the storm?
- How did the men who were demon possessed feel after Jesus cast the demons out of them?
- Does reading this Scripture help build your faith in knowing how powerful Jesus and God are?
Prayer of the Day:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that through the stories in this Scripture we are reminded by Jesus how powerful You are. Jesus spoke and the winds obeyed Him, just as You did when You created the world. Help us to have faith enough to believe and know You are all-powerful. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
