Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Blessed Hannah” (1 Samuel 2:11-21)

The LORD Blessed Hannah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 2:11-21. In this Scripture, we learn that Elkanah and the rest of the family returned to their home in Ramah, but they left Samuel with Eli, the priest, so he could minister to the LORD. The sons of Eli were wicked. They didn’t know the LORD.

One of the customs of the priest during this time was that when men offered sacrifices they would cook them. When the sacrifice was done they would take a three-pronged utensil, dip into the pot and whatever they retrieved would be given to the priest. This custom was followed in Shiloh for all the Israelites who came to bring sacrifices.

The sacrifices were to be willingly given as an act of obedience to the LORD, but Eli’s sons threatened people into offering sacrifices. Then, they would choose the pieces of meat they wanted first before the rest was boiled for sacrifice. These young men committed a great sin before the LORD. They caused contempt among the people making them despise the offering of the LORD.

Samuel was only a child, yet he ministered to the LORD. He wore a linen garment. His mother would also make him a coat and bring it to him each year when they came to bring their sacrifice.

Eli, the priest, prayed to the LORD and asked Him to bless Elkanah and Hannah with more children because of the sacrifice they made by allowing Samuel to serve the LORD. The LORD blessed Elkanah and Hannah with three more sons and two daughters.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 2:11-21

11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.
12 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.
13 And the priests’ custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
14 And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
15 Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
16 And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
17 Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.
18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.
19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
20 And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
21 And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

Things to think about:

  • What was the problem with Eli’s sons?
  • Can you imagine leaving your child and only seeing him once a year? How hard do you think this was for Hannah?
  • Why did God bless Hannah and Elkanah?
  • In what way did God bless Hannah and Elkanah?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this story about Samuel and the sacrifice his parents made by dedicating him to Your service. We thank You that we can see You blessed them for their obedience. Help us to use their example as inspiration to do Your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Song of Hannah” (1 Samuel 2:1-10)

Song of Hannah

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 2:1-10. In this Scripture, we find a prayer which was made into a song called the Song of Hannah. It is a song of praise to the LORD.

In chapter one, we learned that Hannah was one of the wives of Elkanah, his other wife had children, but Hannah hadn’t been blessed with children. She was very upset about her barrenness so she poured her heart out to God and promised Him if He would give her a son she would dedicate him to God. God heard Hannah’s cry, answered her prayer and gave her a son, whom she called Samuel.

Once Hannah weaned Samuel she took him to the temple and left him there to grow up and learn about God. Even though it was hard, Hannah kept her promise since she promised God she would dedicate Samuel to Him.

This prayer the dedication Hannah said when she took Samuel to the temple. Hannah rejoiced in the LORD and in His salvation, her strength (horn) was in the LORD. When we talk about salvation we mean our past sins have been forgiven. We are being sanctified daily from the sins of the flesh and we will be glorified in the future.

Hannah acknowledges there is no one as holy as the LORD. There is no rock like God. Let’s look at some other places in the Bible where God is called, “the rock.” Psalm 95:1 says,O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” In Psalm 78:35, we read, “And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.”

Hannah reminds us not to boast and be proud because knowledge comes from the LORD, and He knows the intent of our actions. She tells us strong men will be broken down, and the weak will be made strong. The ones who were full work for bread and the ones who were hungry were filled. The one who was barren had children, and the one who had many children was feeble. This was probably directed at the other wife because there was strife between them since Hannah hadn’t been able to have children up to this point.

As you read through this Scripture notice when you see the word LORD what Hannah says about Him. She talks about His power and how He has the power to both give life and take it. She says the LORD makes the rich and the poor. He expects those of us who have more to help those who are less fortunate.  God created the world and put it all together.

In verse 10 Hannah talks about things that will happen in the future such as God’s adversaries being destroyed and God judging the world. Then she talks about God giving His strength to the king and He will exalt Him. This king she is talking about is Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 2:1-10

1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.
2 There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.
5 They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
6 The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
9 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
10 The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

Things to think about:

  • What does Hannah mean when she says God is our rock?
  • Have you accepted the King of Kings as your Savior? If so, describe your experience.
  • Hannah says the LORD is the God of knowledge, do you ask Him for wisdom? In what instances has He given you wisdom?
  • How do you praise God for the blessings He has given you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this song of prayer and thanksgiving Hannah sang to You to praise You and thank You for answering her prayer. In this Scripture, we are reminded of Your power and strength. We’re also reminded that You are in control. You are our rock and our redeemer. Help us to always remember to pray to You as You said in Your Word that You would give us the desires of our hearts, as You did Hannah. Help us to remember to always praise You and give thanks to You for answering our prayers, as Hannah did. In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God Answers Hannah’s Prayer” (1 Samuel 1:15-28)

God Answers Hannah’s Prayer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 1:15-28. In this Scripture, we see how God answers Hannah’s prayer. In the previous lesson, we saw that Hannah was distraught because she couldn’t have a baby. She wept and prayed to God begging Him to give her a son. The priest saw her and thought she was drunk. Why did the priest think she was drunk?

Hannah answered Eli saying, “No, I am not drunk. I am very upset. I just poured my soul out to the LORD.” She told Eli not to count her as a daughter of the devil. Eli told her to go in peace and blessed her saying, “May the God of Israel grant your request.” Hannah found grace in God and in Eli. After she prayed to God and Eli blessed her she went to eat and was no longer sad. She found hope in the LORD and believed He would answer her prayer.

The next morning Hannah and her family got up early and worshiped the LORD, then they traveled back home to Ramah. That night Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah. The LORD remembered Hannah’s cry. He blessed her and she conceived a son. When the child was born Hannah named him Samuel because she asked for him from the LORD. Samuel was a gift to Hannah from the LORD.

The next year when Elkanah and the rest of the family went on their yearly journey to the temple in Shiloh, Hannah and Samuel didn’t go. Hannah told her husband she would stay home until Samuel was weaned from breastfeeding. Then, she would take him, dedicate him to the LORD, and he would stay there forever. Elkanah told Hannah she could do whatever she thought was right, after all, it was her and God who made the agreement.

After Hannah weaned Samuel she took him, three bullocks, one ephah of flour and a bottle of wine along with her to the temple in Shiloh. Biblical scholars believe that Samuel was probably about three years old when they went to the temple. Mothers nursed their babies for a long time in biblical times, though they also fed them solid food once they were old enough to eat it. They sacrificed the bullock and took Samuel to Eli, the priest, to present him to the LORD.

Hannah told Eli that she was the woman who had been crying and praying to the LORD for a child. She told him that this is the child she had prayed for; the LORD answered her prayer and blessed her with a son. Hannah promised God if He gave her a son she would lend him to the LORD all the days of his life. God answered her prayer and Hannah kept the promise she made to the LORD. Can you imagine how hard it was for Hannah to take her son and leave him at the temple because he was still a little boy?

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 1:15-28

15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

28 Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

Things to think about:

  • Does God always answer our prayers immediately? If not, how should we react in the meantime?
  • Does God always say yes to our prayers? If not, what are some other ways He may respond to our prayers?
  • What do you think it took for Hannah to be able to keep her promise to the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture where we see how You answered Hannah’s prayer.  Thank You that You hear our prayers and answer them. Help us to understand that the answer might not come today. The answer may be for us to wait, the answer may be no, but You always hear and answer our prayers. Help us to keep our promises to You as Hannah did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love you, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Hannah Prays to God” (1 Samuel 1:1-14)

hannah praysHannah Prays to God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 1:1-14. In this Scripture, we learn about a lady by the name of Hannah. She was one of the wives of Elkanah.  His other wife was named Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but God hadn’t blessed Hannah with children.

Each year Elkanah and his wives went to the city of Shiloh to worship and bring sacrifices to the LORD. When Elkanah offered his sacrifices he gave Peninnah and all her children portions, but Hannah only got a small portion, because she didn’t have any children. How do you think this made Hannah feel?

There was some tension between Peninnah and Hannah because of the fact that one had children and the other one didn’t. No doubt Peninnah bragged and made Hannah feel sad about the situation, so much so she caused Hannah to cry and not eat.

Elkanah asked Hannah why she was crying, why she wouldn’t eat and why was she so sad? He asked her, “Am I not better to you than ten sons?” Hannah loved her husband, but she also wanted to give him children.

After they finished dinner Hannah went to the temple and poured her heart out to God, crying and praying to God asking Him to give her a son. She promised God if He would give her a son she would dedicate him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor would ever come on his head.

First John 5:14-15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” Hannah loved God and she trusted Him with her concerns.

Hannah was praying in her heart. She didn’t speak out loud – only her mouth was moving. Eli the priest was nearby, saw Hannah and thought she was drunk. He asked her how long she was going to be drunk and told her to put away the wine.

I can empathize with Hannah. I was married to my husband for eight years before we had our first child. I loved my husband, but I also wanted to have children as Hannah did. I remember being distraught, crying, praying to God and begging Him to give us children.

I would see other people who had children and not understand why God blessed them and hadn’t given us children. It was a very trying time in my life and I am sure it was for my husband as well. There were many days I was so sad because of it I would cry. I had two miscarriages, then, finally, we had our first daughter. God ended up blessing us with two beautiful daughters and now He has blessed us with five precious grandchildren.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 1:1-14

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.
4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.
11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.
13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

Things to think about:

  • Describe how you think Hannah felt.
  • Have you ever wanted something as much as Hannah wanted a child? If so, describe how you felt.
  • In what ways did you turn your concerns over to the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this story of Hannah. It reminds us no matter what our burden is we can bring it to You. Hannah was desperate to have children and she had no one to turn to but You. She knew You loved her, cared for her and she could trust You with her concerns. Help us to remember You are always there for us, You love us and care about what we are going through in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Saul and His Son’s Fate” (1 Samuel 31:7-13)

Samue 31 saulssuicide1samuel31-4

Saul and His Son’s Fate

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Samuel 31:7-13. When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those from the other side of Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they left the cities, and fled. Then the Philistines came and took over their cities.

When the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons among the fallen soldiers at mount Gilboa.

They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent it all around the land of the Philistines, to announce Saul’s death in the house of their idols, and among their people.

They put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth: and they hung his body to the wall of Bethshan.

When the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul; all the strong men took action. They traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and his son’s bodies from the wall of Bethshan. They took their bodies to Jabesh, and burned them. Then, they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.

The men of Israel honored God in the midst of their suffering. They were mourning the loss of their leader and many others who had been lost in the war. They had also lost some of their cities to their enemy. Their hearts were broken. They fasted and turned to the one who could comfort their hearts and souls at this time of trouble.

It is hard sometimes to praise God in the midst of our trials. There will be a day when we no longer have to face the trouble of this world. God will wipe away all of our tears. We will live in peace forever.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Samuel 31:7-13

7 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.
11 And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;
12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Things to think about:

  • What happened when the men of Israel found out about Saul and his son’s death?
  • What did the Philistines do when they found Saul and his son’s bodies among the dead soldiers?
  • What did the men of Israel do when they found out what the Philistines had done with Saul and his son’s bodies?

Prayer of the Day:

As we study this Scripture we can see that the people of Israel were in much distress. Their leader was dead. Many of their men had been killed. Some of their cities had been overtaken. Surely they were in a state of mourning. They fasted for seven days. That was their way of honoring You in spite of their troubles. Help us to remember that we need to honor You even when life is not going good. Help us to not let the troubled times in our lives turn us away from you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

by Deborah H. Bateman

About the book:

The Book of Nehemiah: A Story of Dedication and Determination is a Daily Bible Reading Study of the book of Nehemiah by Deborah H. Bateman. The book of Nehemiah is found in the Old Testament of the Bible. Nehemiah was led by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Nehemiah was a great leader. He headed up the project. Despite the opposition that the Jewish people encountered they were able to complete this major project in less than sixty days. Their dedication and determination shines through in every aspect of the project.

The Book of Nehemiah: A Story of Dedication and Determination contains eighteen Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scripture, a few questions for contemplation or discussion and a prayer for the day. This is a great Bible study that can be used for either a personal Daily Bible Reading Study or for a group Bible study.
