Daily Bible Reading “How Great Thou Art” (Psalm 104:18-35)

How Great Thou Art

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 104:18-35. The Psalmist continues to share with us about the creation of the LORD. Do you enjoy looking at God’s creation and marvel at His wondrous works? The Psalmist says, “The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies,” which are a type of rabbit.

He talks about how God created the moon for seasons and to shine its light at night. So, the beasts of the field can hunt for food until the sun rises, then they retreat to their dens. God created the sun to light the day for man so he can work by day and rest at night. Isn’t it amazing how God orchestrated everything to work together?

I love verse twenty-four, which says, “O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.” Then, the Psalmist goes on to talk about the vastness of the sea and all the creatures God created who live in the sea.

Think about that for a minute — all the many creatures God created. Consider all the different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some of the creatures swim, some fly, some walk on four legs. It’s simply amazing when you think of the vastness of God’s creation.

The ships sail upon the sea and search for food. The LORD gives the fishermen their reward in due time. The fishermen gather from the sea what the LORD blesses them with to feed their families. They sell the rest of their catch to make a living.

When the LORD hides His face from man he becomes afraid, and rightly so. Why would God turn His face away from us? Maybe He would do such a thing because we rebelled against Him and sinned. Maybe He would do it to get our attention. God is the one who gives us breath to live. When He takes away our breath we die and return to the dust from which He created us. God sends His spirit to create more life to replenish the earth. The LORD rejoices over His wondrous works. His glory will endure forever.

When God looks on the earth it trembles. When He touches the mountains they smoke. This reminds me of earthquakes and volcanoes.

The Psalmist declares he will sing and praise the LORD as long as he lives. He will meditate on the LORD and enjoy sweet fellowship with Him. He cries out to God for the wicked to be no more on the face of the earth. He blesses and praises the LORD.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 104:18-35

18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies.

19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.

20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.

21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.

22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.

23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.

24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.

25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.

26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.

28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

31 The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works.

32 He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.

33 I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.

35 Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you marvel at the works of the LORD?
  • Do you thank God and praise Him for His wondrous works?
  • In what ways can we show the LORD that we appreciate all He has done for us?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 104 in which the Psalmist reminds us to give You glory and praise for Your wondrous works. Help us to show You how much we love and appreciate all the things You have created for us and given us to enjoy. Help us to praise and worship You all the days of our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “How Great is Our God” (Psalm 104:1-17)

How Great is Our God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 104:1-17. Have you ever considered who the LORD is and all He does or has done? The Psalmist goes through a list of His acts in Psalm 104. He thanks and praises the LORD for His honor and majesty. The LORD covers Himself with light like a garment. He stretched out the heavens as a curtain to cover the world.

The LORD lays the beams of His chambers in the water. He makes the clouds His chariot and walks on the wings of the wind. He makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flaming fire. He created the foundations of the earth, and firmly established it, so it wouldn’t be moved forever.

He covers it with the deep like a curtain. The waters stood above the mountains. At the sound of thunder they fled. The water goes up to the mountains and back down to the valley where He founded them. He made springs of water to flow in the valleys between the mountains. He set boundaries so the waters would never cover the earth again. The springs provide water for the beasts of the field to quench their thirst and He causes the grass to grow to feed them.

He also uses the waters of the springs to provide places for the birds to make their nests as they sing with their beautiful voices from the branches of the trees. He causes herbs to grow so man can grow food to feed themselves and their families. He provides oil, bread, and wine to satisfy the hunger of man. His creation plan included every beast of the field, fowl of the air, and human being and all of their needs. He left nothing undone. How great is our God!

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 104:1-17

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:
3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:
5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.
7 At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.
8 They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.
9 Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.
10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills.
11 They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst.
12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.
13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.
14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
15 And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.
16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;
17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.

 

Things to think about:

  • Think about the vastness of God’s creation. Draw a picture on paper or in your mind to remind yourself of His creation.
  • As you look at God’s creation, what is your favorite part?
  • Think about how God provided for each and every creature He created and list them. What an awesome God!

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 104. The Psalmist reminds us of what an awesome God You are. He reminds us of Your creation and how You provided for every creature You created. We thank You for You wonderful plan of provision for the earth and everything in the earth. Help us to show our gratitude for Your creation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Bless the LORD, O My Soul” (Psalm 103:1-22)

Bless the LORD, O My Soul

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 103:1-22. When is the last time you stopped and thought about the LORD and all the benefits He has bestowed upon you? This is a Psalm of David in which his whole purpose of writing is to remind us to bless the LORD. What does it mean to “bless” the LORD? It means to exalt Him, lift Him up, and honor Him as God. All believers can do this, not only priests or pastors. When we worship and praise the LORD it blesses Him. David blesses the holy name of the LORD.

David reminds us of all of the benefits of the LORD. He reminds us that the LORD forgives our sins and heals our diseases. God made Himself known to Moses and demonstrated His wondrous works to the children of Israel. God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and thankfully so, or He would have taken us out a long time ago. He has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west.

We are like the grass that withers away, but the LORD is eternal. His mercy is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. God has prepared a place in heaven for those who believe. David calls out for everything and everyone to bless the LORD. He ends the Psalm like he started it saying, “Bless the LORD, O my soul.”

Take some time today to think about all the things you have for which to bless the LORD. You can bless Him by giving Him thanks and praise for who He is and for His many blessings in your life. You could read this Scripture or other Scriptures out loud to the LORD and declare His goodness and mercy to Him. Don’t you enjoy hearing people say good things about you? What makes you think that the LORD wouldn’t enjoy hearing you acknowledge Him?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 103:1-22

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

Things to think about:

  • What are some things for which we can bless the LORD?
  • Have you accepted God’s forgiveness for your sins?
  • Look around you and think of all the blessings the LORD has bestowed upon you. List them here and thank Him for them.

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 103 in which David reminds us to bless You. LORD, we bless Your holy name. You are merciful and loving. You are forgiving and kind. You have made a way for us to have forgiveness of our sins, if we only believe. You are the creator, You are our provider, You are our protector. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Will Hear the Prayer of the Destitute” (Psalm 102:15-28)

The LORD Will Hear the Prayer of the Destitute

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 102:15-28. Have you ever felt desperate for God to hear and answer your prayer? The Psalmist earlier in the chapter cried out for God to hear his prayer. In this portion of the chapter he declares the greatness of the LORD.

He says the heathen will fear the name of the LORD and all the kings of the earth will fear His glory. When the LORD comes back in all His glory, He will build up Zion. He will remember the prayer of the destitute.

The Psalmist reminds us, this is written for the generation to come. It is a prophetic statement to let us know that the LORD hears and answers our prayers and He will return one day to take His children home.

The LORD looks down from His sanctuary in heaven and hears the cries of the prisoner. He will come back to proclaim the name of the LORD in Zion. His people will gather in Jerusalem to praise and worship the LORD.

This man is weak in his body and believes he is close to the end of his days. He is begging the LORD to spare his life.

The Psalmist professes the LORD as the creator of the world and that His name will last forever. The name of the LORD will be passed down from generation to generation. It is our duty as believers to make sure that the Word of the LORD is passed down to the next generation.

We need to teach our children and grandchildren about the LORD. Are you doing your part to spread the good news of the Gospel to the next generation? Thank God for those who came before us and sacrificed to make sure we knew about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our lifetime.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 102:15-28

15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.
16 When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.
18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth;
20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;
21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;
22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.
24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you show reverence for the name of the LORD?
  • In what ways can we prepare for the return of the LORD?
  • How do you acknowledge God as being the creator of the world?
  • What are some things we can do to make sure future generations have a chance to hear the Gospel?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 102 in which the Psalmist reminds us of Your greatness and holiness. Help us to acknowledge You as LORD of this earth and as LORD of our lives. Help us to share the Gospel with the next generation. Help us to look forward to Your return. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God’s Favor” (Psalm 44:1-26) PURIM Celebration

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 44:1-26. The Psalmist says they heard from their fathers how God helped them to defeat the enemy and drive them out of the land. They didn’t do it on their own accord, but by the favor of God. Have you ever been in a position where you knew it was God’s favor that gave you victory?

When we look at this Scripture and we look at other Scriptures in the Bible, we see how God’s favor on people’s lives changed the outcome. We can look back and see things that happened in our lives that were devastating, but somehow God brought us through them. Somehow He took what the enemy meant for evil in our life and turned it to good. God used it for His honor and glory to further His kingdom.

In the book of Esther it was God’s favor that changed the circumstances of the death sentence for the Jewish people and helped them to defeat the enemy who sought to destroy them. The Bible tells us the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Christ came that we might have life to the fullest; abundant, and overflowing. Don’t let the enemy steal your joy in life. We can’t fight him with our own strength. Let God fill your life with His presence, His favor, His grace, His mercy and His love.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 44:1-26

1 [[To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.]] We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, [what] work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake.

 

Things to think about:

  • Do you have the favor of God on your life?
  • Can you look back in your life and see where God made a difference in your life?
  • How can you use those experiences to move your faith forward knowing if God helped you in the past He will help you with whatever is going on in your life now? Turn it all over to Him.


Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to seek Your face and turn to You for deliverance. Help us to keep serving You and loving You no matter what the circumstances of life are. Give us favor and help us to win the battle over the enemy. Redeem us for Your sake and help us to give You honor and glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

About the book:

PURIM Celebration: 28 Daily Devotionals is a Daily Bible Reading Study Book by Deborah H. Bateman and friends. It is a compilation of 28 Daily Devotionals by Deborah and fourteen of her author and writer friends.

Purim is a holiday that was started back in the days of Queen Esther and is still celebrated today. Deborah took the letters of PURIM and created categories for the contributors to write about:

• P=Praise
• U=Un-forgiveness or Forgiveness
• R=Relationships
• I=Inspirational
• M=Marriage

One of the traditions of Purim is giving gifts to the poor. In light of that tradition we have decided that a portion of the proceeds of this book will go to charity.

PURIM Celebration was created as part of Deborah’s Book Launch for her book: The Book of Esther: A Story of Love and Favor which was published in 2012.

PURIM Celebration includes devotionals from: Mary Pacheco, Penny Zeller, Katherine Harms, Dave Moore, Marlo Schalesky, Judith Robl, Lynn Dove, Buffy Crabtree, Deborah McCarragher, Shawn Lamb, Serge Roux-Levrat, Lily Brenner, Heidi Faith, and Lisa Buffaloe. The book is edited by Lisa Lickel, one of my friends in the John 3:16 Networking Group.

Some of the contributors are from the John 3:16 Network Marketing group Deborah belongs to. Some of the writers are from a coaching program that Deborah participates in. One of the authors is from the Palmetto Christian Writer’s Network Deborah is a member of. The rest of the writers and authors are friends Deborah has made over the past few years online.
