Daily Bible Reading “God’s Favor” (Psalm 44:1-26) PURIM Celebration

God’s Favor

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 44:1-26. The Psalmist says they heard from their fathers how God helped them to defeat the enemy and drive them out of the land. They didn’t do it on their own accord, but by the favor of God. Have you ever been in a position where you knew it was God’s favor that gave you victory?

When we look at this Scripture and we look at other Scriptures in the Bible, we see how God’s favor on people’s lives changed the outcome. We can look back and see things that happened in our lives that were devastating, but somehow God brought us through them. Somehow He took what the enemy meant for evil in our life and turned it to good. God used it for His honor and glory to further His kingdom.

In the book of Esther it was God’s favor that changed the circumstances of the death sentence for the Jewish people and helped them to defeat the enemy who sought to destroy them. The Bible tells us the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Christ came that we might have life to the fullest; abundant, and overflowing. Don’t let the enemy steal your joy in life. We can’t fight him with our own strength. Let God fill your life with His presence, His favor, His grace, His mercy and His love.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 44:1-26

1 [[To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.]] We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, [what] work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

19Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies’ sake.

Things to think about:

Do you have the favor of God on your life?

Can you look back in your life and see where God made a difference in your life?

How can you use those experiences to move your faith forward knowing if God helped you in the past He will help you with whatever is going on in your life now? Turn it all over to Him.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to seek Your face and turn to You for deliverance. Help us to keep serving You and loving You no matter what the circumstances of life are. Give us favor and help us to win the battle over the enemy. Redeem us for Your sake and help us to give You honor and glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let Every Thing That Has Breath Praise the LORD” (Psalm 150:1-6)

Let Every Thing That Has Breath Praise the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 150:1-6. Psalm 150 is a Psalm of praise to the LORD. The Psalmist calls out for us to praise the LORD in His sanctuary, and in the firmament of His power. Praise Him for His mighty acts. Praise Him for His exceptional greatness.

Praise Him with the beautiful music of the trumpet. Praise Him with the psaltery (a bag made from animal skin that held liquids, possibly a water bottle), and harp. Dance and praise him with the timbrel (tambourine. Praise Him with stringed instruments, organs, and loud cymbals (an instrument that made a tingling or clinking noise).

My favorite verse from this chapter is verse 6, which says, “Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.” You may be surprised to find out how good it makes you feel to praise the LORD. God created the earth and everything in it to praise Him, including us. “Praise ye the LORD.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 150: 1-6

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

Do you play a musical instrument on which you can praise the LORD? If so, what is it?
Do you enjoy listening to praise and worship music? If so, what is your favorite praise and worship song?
What are some ways we can praise the LORD?
How do you feel when you praise the LORD?
How do you think it makes God feel when we praise Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 150 where the Psalmist encourages us to sing praises to You. Help us to use every instrument we can and our voices to sing praises and make beautiful music to praise and worship Your holy name. We love You, LORD, and we praise You for who You are and for all You have done for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Psalm 119 has already been published a book called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Sing unto the LORD a New Song” (Psalm 149:1-9)

Sing unto the LORD a New Song

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 149:1-9. Psalm 149 is a Psalm of praise. The Psalmist exhorts us to sing to the LORD a new song.

He calls on Israel to rejoice in their Creator and be joyful in their King. He encourages them to praise God in their dance and sing praises to Him with the timbrel (tambourine) and harp. The LORD takes pleasure in His people and enjoys their praise.

The Psalmist says for the children of God to sing praises to God on their beds. This makes me think that we should sing praises to God when we wake up in the morning and before we go to sleep at night.

He calls out for the praises of God to be in their mouths and a two-edged sword in their hand. These people no doubt were in battle. They had to defend their faith, their lives, and their land. They had to declare judgment on their enemies. Yet, they were to praise the LORD.

Even so, we should be praising the LORD in spite of our circumstances. Circumstances come and go, but the love of the LORD will last forever. Sing praises to His holy name.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 149:1-9

1 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
7 To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;
8 To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
9 To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

What do you think the new song was that they were supposed to sing to the LORD?
How does it make you feel to read “The LORD takes pleasure in his people?”
Do you make a habit of being joyful and singing praises to the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 149 where the Psalmist exhorts us to sing praises to the LORD. Help us to praise You day and night. Help us to praise You in spite of our circumstances. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Let them Praise the Name of the LORD” (Psalm 148:1-14)

Let them Praise the Name of the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 148:1-14. Psalm 148 is a Psalm of praise. The Psalmist cries out to all the heavens, and the angels to praise the LORD. He also calls on the sun, the stars, and the moon to praise the LORD. His cry for them to praise the LORD is because God commanded and they were created. He established them forever by making a decree that will not pass away.

The Psalmist goes on to exalt all things to praise the LORD, including the trees, the mountains, the beast of the field, and the fowl of the air. He calls out to all the people of the earth to praise the LORD, including kings, princes, and judges. He calls on young men, women, old men, and children to praise the LORD.

The Psalmist ends the chapter by telling us why we should praise the LORD. We need to praise the LORD because His name is excellent; His glory is above the heaven and earth. The LORD exalts the praise of His people, including the children of Israel. Let everything and everybody praise the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 148:1-14

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
2 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.
4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.
5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.
7 Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps:
8 Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:
9 Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars:
10 Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:
11 Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth:

Things to think about:

Does it overwhelm you when you think of the vastness of the creation of the LORD?
How does it make you feel to know we were all created to praise the LORD?
Do you make it a habit of praising the LORD? If so, in what ways?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 148 where the Psalmist exhorts everybody and everything to praise the LORD. You are worthy of our praise. You created the whole universe and everything in it. Help us to honor You by praising Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem” (Psalm 147:12-20)

Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 147:12-20. In this Scripture, the Psalmist cries out to Jerusalem to praise the LORD God of Zion. He strengthened their gates and blessed them with children. He makes peace in their borders and fills them with the finest wheat.

He sends His commandment throughout the earth, sharing His Word. He gives snow like wool and scatters frost like ashes. He casts ice like morsels to show forth the cold. He sends His word to melt them and causes the wind to blow, and the water to flow.

Reading this Scripture reminds me of the weather we’ve been having lately. It seems like the weather goes from one extreme to the other. We often complain about the weather if it’s not pleasing to us. This Scripture helps us to remember it is God who makes the snow to fall, the wind to blow, and the rain to come. He also makes the sun to shine and the beautiful blue skies to brighten our days. Just as life is not always pleasant, we can’t always have the weather we prefer, but we can still enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

Not only did God bless Jerusalem as His chosen city, the LORD God also gave His statutes and judgments to Jacob to deliver to Israel. God hasn’t dealt with any other nation like He has dealt with Israel, and no other nation has known His judgments like Israel. Along with God’s blessings comes His judgment. He is a just God. He loves us, but it is also His duty to judge us as a righteous judge.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 147:12-20

12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion.
13 For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.
14 He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.
15 He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly.
16 He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes.
17 He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?
18 He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow.
19 He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.
20 He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

Why did God choose Jerusalem as His chosen city?
Why were the people of Jerusalem God’s chosen people?
Why did God reveal to Jacob His statutes for Israel as His chosen land?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 147 where the Psalmist cries out to Jerusalem to praise You. Thank You for helping us to understand Your relationship with Israel and Jerusalem. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem. We anxiously await Your return. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
