God Is the Rock of My Refuge

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 94:12-23. Blessed is the man the LORD chastens and teaches the ways of God. The LORD won’t cast off His people or forsake His inheritance. He judges according to righteousness and those who follow Him should follow after righteousness. The Psalmist questions, “Who will stand up for me against the wicked?”

The Psalmist acknowledges that if the LORD hadn’t helped him he wouldn’t have survived. When he was weak and losing hope God’s mercy held him up. He delights in the comfort of the LORD.

The Psalmist says, “The wicked gather together against the righteous and shed innocent blood.” He proclaims that the LORD is his defense and the rock of his refuge. The Psalmist had faith in God that He would defend him. He trusted that God would cause the enemy to be cut off by having their own iniquity come against them.

God is the same today, yesterday, and always. He never changes. God is the same that He was in the beginning and He will be the same until the end of time. We can count on Him. He is not going to change His mind. He will not leave us or forsake us. As the Psalmist trusted God, we can trust Him to be our defender, our rock, our refuge. God loves His children and He will defend them until the end.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 94:12-23

12 Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

13 That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

14 For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

15 But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

17 Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.

18 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

19 In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

20 Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?

21 They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

22 But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

23 And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off.

Things to think about:

Do you think of God as your refuge? In what way?
In what ways do you trust God to take care of you?
Do you pray and ask God to help you when the enemy attacks? In what ways has He helped you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this Scripture where we are reminded that we can trust and depend on You to defend us against the enemy. You are our strength, when we are weak. You are our help in time of need. You will never leave us or forsake us. Help us to realize that You are always by our side. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 4 Chapters 91-118 contains thirty-six Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Vengeance Belongs to the LORD” (Psalm 94:1-11)

Vengeance Belongs to the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 94:1-11. The Psalmist proclaims that vengeance belongs to the LORD and requests God to show Himself and judge the earth. He questions how long the wicked will be allowed to triumph over God’s people.

How long will the workers of iniquity be allowed to speak bad things against the chosen children of God? The wicked do all kinds of evil acts against the people of God. The Psalmist asks, “How long will you tolerate these acts, Oh God?” We could probably ask some of these same questions today.

The Psalmist says to God, “The wicked think You don’t see what they are doing.” They think they are getting away with their foolishness. They are so unwise that they don’t understand that You, God, are the one who created man and all the aspects of man. How could You not see, hear, and know what they are doing? They don’t realize it is just a matter of time before You will repay them for their evil works. You are all knowing and You know the thoughts and intents of man.

Romans 12:19, says, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” We don’t have to worry about getting revenge, the LORD will take care of it all in due time. He is a loving God, but He is also a just God. He will judge the wicked for their evil acts.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 94:1-11

1 O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
2 Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
3 LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?
4 How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
5 They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage.
6 They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
7 Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11 The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

Things to think about:

Do you ever wonder the same things as the Psalmist contemplates in this Scripture? If so, how do you resolve the issue?
Do you try to take vengeance on those who have wronged you, or do you let God handle it?
Do you pray for those who do wrong that they may see the light and not just what you think is right?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 94. Help us to realize that You see and know all things that are happening in the world today. Help us to know that You are in charge of vengeance and we don’t need to worry about it. You will take care of those who mistreat Your children. Help us to trust completely in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is Mighty” (Psalm 93:1-5)

The LORD is Mighty

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 93:1-5. The Psalmist starts this Psalm proclaiming that the LORD reigns and is clothed in majesty and strength. God established both the world and His throne. He is everlasting. He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end.

The Psalmist says the floods have come and the waves are high, but the LORD is stronger than the noise of the mighty waves of the sea. Have you ever been on the beach when there was a storm coming and the waves are loud, they almost seem angry, and the thunder is boisterous? The LORD made these – He is mightier than they.

God’s testimonies are sure. We can trust Him and count on Him to keep His word. He is Holy, faithful and true. His name will endure forever. I love this verse from Revelation 14:2, “And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps.”

The Scripture reminds me of the sound of the waves at the beach. I love listening to the waves crashing as the surf comes in. I think about this Scripture when I hear the waves and think of God’s voice as being like the swishing sound of the waves. I don’t know about you, but that is a soothing sound to me. Have you ever considered God’s voice being like the sound of the waves?

The next time you are at the beach, close your eyes and listen to the sound of the crashing waves and feel God’s presence with you as you listen for His voice. You don’t have to wait until you go to the beach to do this – you can do it right now. Close your eyes and take time to be still and listen for His voice.

Many times I think the reason we don’t hear from God is because we don’t take time to be quiet and listen. In the hustle and bustle of life we often turn the television or radio on as soon as we get up in the morning and have some type of noise going all day long. Try spending some time each day in quiet meditation, listening to hear the voice of God speaking to you.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 93:1-5

1 The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
2 Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.
3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.
4 The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.
5 Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.

Things to think about:

How do you picture God?
Do you think of God as being strong and mighty? How, when?
Do you think of God as being clothed in majesty? What does it mean to do that?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this Scripture in Psalm 93. LORD, we praise You for Your majesty and power. You are mightier than the sound of many waters crashing to the shore. Help us to learn to listen for Your voice. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to the LORD” (Psalm 92:1-15)

Give Thanks to the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 92:1-15. Psalm 92 is a psalm, or song, for the Sabbath day, in which the Psalmist reminds us it is good to give thanks to the LORD and sing praises to His name. We can show Him our love and faithfulness by praying and giving thanks to Him both in the morning and at night before we fall asleep.

We can sing praises to God and play instruments with songs of hymns to Him. If you don’t play an instrument or sing, there are many other ways to praise Him. We have so much to thank God for. We can thank Him for His wondrous works.

It pleases God for us to have an attitude of gratitude toward Him, instead of taking everything He does for us for granted. Doesn’t it make you feel good when others are grateful for what you do for them, instead of taking it for granted and acting like you owe them? In the same way our Heavenly Father enjoys it when we thank and praise Him.

The wicked don’t understand the LORD. The Scripture says, they will be destroyed, but God will reign forever. The righteous will flourish like the trees of Lebanon. They will bring forth fruit in their old days. The Psalmist declares, “The LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.”

Giving thanks and praising God are two of the things I talked about in my books: Give Thanks and Finding Our Identity in Christ. When we begin to thank God and praise Him we can feel His presence with us. As we do these things it will help us to develop a close, personal, intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 92:1-15

1 [A Psalm [or Song for the sabbath day.]] It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:
2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,
3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.
4 For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.
5 O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.
6 A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.
7 When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:
8 But thou, LORD, art most high for evermore.
9 For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.
10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.
11 Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.
12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
15 To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you enjoy giving thanks to God?
What are your favorite songs to sing praises to God?
Do you ever sing songs of praise to God outside of church?
In what ways do you consider the LORD your rock?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 92, where the Psalmist reminds us to give thanks to You and to sing Your praises. He reminds us that the righteous will flourish. Help us to show our love and faithfulness to You by giving thanks and singing praises to You day and night. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks for the HOPE We Have in Christ” (2 Thessalonians 2

Give Thanks for the Hope we Have in Christ

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17. In the first chapter of the letter Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica he addresses the tribulations that they have been going through. In this chapter he talks to them about the hope we have in Christ.

Even in that time the people thought the Lord was coming back or had already came and they missed it. Paul tells them of some of the signs of the times and things that will take place before the Lord comes back to gather His children.

Paul talks about the wrath that will come upon the people who refuse to accept Christ. It breaks my heart to think that anybody would have to go through this. It’s my desire that all would come to Christ, but I know there are some who won’t accept Him.

If you are reading this and have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I urge you to pray and ask Him to come into your heart and forgive you of your sins, that you might escape the wrath to come and live eternally with Him in heaven.Paul gives thanks to God for the people and talks to them about the hope we have in Christ. Do you know of that hope?

Daily Bible Reading:

2 Thessalonians 2:1-17

1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Things to think about:

How do you know if you’ve found the hope of the Lord?

In what ways does the Lord comfort your heart?

Do you look forward to the coming of Christ?

Prayer of the day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the hope we have in You. We pray for those who haven’t yet accepted Your salvation, that they might accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives. We give thanks to You for Your love for us and the comfort we have in You. We love You, LORD. Amen.
