Daily Bible Reading “How Excellent is Thy Loving-kindness, O God!” (Psalm 36:1-12)

How Excellent is Thy Loving-kindness,

O God!

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 36:1-12. Psalm 36 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician, which means it was probably used as a song of worship.

David talks about the wicked who have an evil nature in their heart. Wicked people have no fear, or reverence, of God. They speak evil and tell lies. They are not wise nor do they do good. They are blinded to their own sinful nature. Even when the wicked lie in their beds they devise evil. What a graphic description of the sinful man!

It almost seems like David is comparing the evil man to God. Because after describing all the evil attributes of the wicked man, David talks about all the good attributes of God. God’s righteousness is like the mighty mountain. God’s faithfulness reaches to the clouds. We can depend on Him to always be there for us.

God preserves and protects both man and beast. His loving-kindness toward us is immeasurable. We can trust Him and rest under the shadow of His wings. God is the fountain of life. From Him flow rivers of living water. Drink from His well so your soul will never thirst.

David asks God not to let the foot of pride come against him. This may be a prayer that we need to say, as well. We need to pray asking the LORD to remove our pride.
David asks God to protect him from the hand of the wicked, and he declares that the “workers of iniquity” will be defeated.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 36:1-12

1 [[To the Chief Musician, [A Psalm] of David the servant of the LORD.]] The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
2 For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.
3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.
4 He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.
5 Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.
6 Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.
7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.
9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.
10 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.
12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.

 

Things to think about:

  • What does David say about the wicked?
  • What does David say about God?
  • How do the attributes of the wicked compare with the attributes of God?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Psalm of David, where he seems to compare the evil man to You. There is no comparison; these descriptions are at opposite ends of the spectrum. You are holy, righteous, loving, and merciful, but, the wicked are evil, liars, and cheaters. LORD, we thank You for Your loving-kindness toward us. Help us to love, worship and praise You for all You are and all You do for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Magnify the LORD” (Psalm 34:1-22)

Magnify the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 34:1-22. Psalm 34 is a Psalm of David. David had been hiding in caves because Saul was seeking to destroy him. In 1 Samuel 21:10-15, David pretended to be a crazy man. The first verse talks about David changing his behavior. Have you ever noticed that sometimes we change our behavior around certain people?

David says that he will bless the LORD at all times, no matter his circumstances. We all know it is a lot easier to praise God when all is going well and a lot harder when times are difficult. David exhorts us to magnify and exalt the LORD. David learned that God would take care of Him through all circumstances of life.

David tells us when he sought the LORD; the LORD heard and delivered him from his fears. Is there something you are afraid of? Have you asked God to deliver you from your fears? David talks about the angel of the LORD encamping around those that fear Him and delivering them. Do you fear the LORD? What does it mean to fear the LORD? This is a way of saying we need to respect or revere the LORD; not be afraid of Him. We should be more concerned about pleasing the LORD than worrying about what He might to do punish us if we didn’t obey Him.

David reminds us to keep our tongues from evil. This is something we all need to be careful about. Sometimes it is difficult to keep our mouths under control. We can’t always say what we think. Sometimes it is better to keep it to ourselves. Like I tell my granddaughters, if you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all. This is a lesson we all need to learn, including myself.

David invites us to taste and see that the LORD is good. “Blessed are those that trust in the LORD.” The LORD hears the cry of His children. He heals their broken hearts. He protects them from their enemies. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants; none of them will be deserted.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 34:1-22

1 [[[A Psalm] of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.]] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

 

Things to think about:

  • How can we determine in our hearts to bless the LORD in spite of our circumstances?
  • How do you magnify the LORD?
  • How can we keep our tongues from speaking evil?
  • In what ways can we show gratitude to God for His provision and protection of us?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Psalm of David. We thank You that David realized the treasure He had in You and taught us to see it. Help us to realize how much You love us and protect us. Help us to enjoy spending time with You and praising You for all You are and all You do for us. Thank you, LORD. We love You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Rejoice in the LORD” (Psalm 33:1-22)

Rejoice in the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 33:1-22. The psalmist reminds us the righteous should rejoice in the LORD. We can praise the LORD through playing instruments and singing songs of praise and worship. In what ways do you like to praise the LORD?

He reminds us that the word of the LORD is right, and all His works are done in truth. He loves righteousness and judgment. You may wonder how the LORD can be both righteous and our judge. It seems like opposite ends of the spectrum. But He is both our righteous LORD and our judge. He loves us, but He will also judge us.

This reminds me of being a parent. We love our children and want the best for them, but when they do wrong, it is our job as parents to punish them for their behavior. We are the ones who have to determine what good, acceptable behavior is and what is not. We are the ones who have to decide what the punishment will be for bad behavior.

I love verse 6 where the psalmist talks about the world being created by the word of the LORD. If you read Genesis chapter one you’ll see where it says, “He spoke” and it was. God spoke this world into existence. All He had to do is say what He wanted to create and it was done. How powerful is it to be able to speak things into existence?

The psalmist says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” As a nation, it is important for us to serve God. We need His blessings on our nation as well as on our individual lives.

The Scripture says God looks down from heaven and sees us. He watches over us, protects us, leads, guides, and directs our lives. We should rejoice in the LORD, because we trust in Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 33:1-22

1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.
2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
10 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
13 The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.
14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.
15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.
16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

 

Things to think about:

  • When you look at this world God created, what are some of the things that cause you to be in awe of Him?
  • When you think about how much God loves us, how do you show your gratitude to Him?
  • How do you praise and worship God for all He has done for you?
  • What makes you think of God as your protector and your guide?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms where we’re reminded to rejoice in You. We thank You for this world You created for us to live in. You are all-powerful and we can see this when we look at Your creation. We praise You that You are in heaven looking over us. Help us to always be grateful and thankful to You. Help us to praise and worship You forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Shout For Joy” (Psalm 32:1-11)

Shout For Joy

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 32:1-11. Psalm 31 is a Psalm of David. David starts by saying, “Blessed are those whose sins are forgiven.” If you’re a Christian, one who has accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are blessed because your sin is covered by His blood.

If you confess your sin to God and ask for His forgiveness, He will forgive you. We need to pray to God while He can be found. Isaiah 55:6 tells us, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”

David says the LORD is his hiding place. He watches over us and protects us. He keeps us from trouble. He will instruct us and teach us. He will lead, guide, and direct us in the way we should go.

David tells us not to be like a horse or a mule that doesn’t understand, and must be led around with a bridle. Wicked people have many sorrows, but those who trust in the LORD, the righteous, are surrounded with mercy. David exhorts the righteous to be glad in the LORD and shout for JOY.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 32:1-11

1 [[[A Psalm] of David, Maschil.]] Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.
11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you asked God to forgive you of your sins? Recall the time.
  • Do you consider the LORD to be your hiding place? If so, when are you most likely to turn to Him as your refuge?
  • In what ways do you depend on the LORD to lead, guide and direct in your life?
  • How do you find happiness and joy in the LORD?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Psalm of David as he reflects on You and Your goodness to him. Remind us of Your goodness to us and to be glad and shout for joy. We are so thankful, and praise You for Your goodness to us. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Be of Good Courage” (Psalm 31:1-24)

Be of Good Courage

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 31:1-24. Psalm 31 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician. David proclaims that he trusts in the LORD. Who or in what do you put your trust? David asks God to deliver him and not let him be ashamed. What makes you feel ashamed? How does shame change the way you act?

David asks God to hear his prayer and deliver him from the enemy. David says God is his rock, his fortress, and his strength. He asks the LORD to lead and guide him.

David cries out to the LORD for mercy. David was in trouble. He was grieved over his situation. David says he was a disgrace to his enemies, and especially his neighbors. David’s enemies were looking for ways to destroy him. He declares that he was like a broken vessel. Have you ever felt broken?

David praises the LORD for having mercy on him. He is grateful to God for protecting him from the enemy. David had many enemies. Many times he was running and hiding out in caves to keep from being killed. David’s enemies were physical. We can also be pursued by the enemy himself, the devil, who goes about seeking to destroy us. He may come against you physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. He may attack your family, your finances, or anything else he can and try to destroy your testimony. David calls on the LORD to protect him from his enemies, and we can also call on the LORD to defend us against the enemy.

David reminds us that we can trust in the LORD to take care of those of us who are faithful. My favorite verse in this Scripture is Psalm 31:24 which says, “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.” Do you have hope in the LORD?

Many of David’s Psalms begin with the troubles that he is facing, but by the end of the Psalm he acknowledges God. David begins this Psalm by begging God to deliver him from his enemies, but by the end of the Psalm he is reminding us of God’s goodness toward His children.

How many times do we, like David, begin our prayers with our troubles, only to be reminded by the Spirit of God and His wonderful power to save us?

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 31:1-24

1 [[To the Chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.
2 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.
3 For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.
4 Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.
5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
6 I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD.
7 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;
8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
9 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.
10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.
11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.
12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.
14 But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.
15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake.
17 Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.
19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!
20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.
21 Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.
23 O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

 

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you express your trust in God?
  • In what ways do you consider God to be your rock and fortress?
  • In what ways has God protected you and given you strength against the enemy?
  • David seems desperate at the beginning of this Scripture, but what is his attitude by the end?
  • David trusted God to deliver him from his enemies. What are you trusting God for today?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. You are our rock and our fortress. You give us strength and protect us from the enemy. You are merciful and forgiving. Even though we fail You, You love and care for us. Help us to have courage Help us to always be grateful and praise You for Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Book of Psalms: Part 1 Chapters 1-30 by Deborah H. Bateman is part of the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from the enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms Part 1 Chapters 1-30 contains thirty-one Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.
