Daily Bible Reading “Arise, O God” (Psalm 74:13-23)

Arise, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 74:13-23. In the first part of Psalm 74, Asaph questioned God about why He allowed the temple to be burned and allowed the enemy to attack His people. In this part of chapter 74 Asaph proclaims to God how mighty He is.

Asaph speaks of God’s strength and power. He talks about God as the creator because He is the one who created the world. He is the one who made day and night. He is the one who set the sun and moon into place. He is the one who made the seasons. Asaph proclaims how marvelous the works of God are.

Asaph was trying to reassure the congregation that God was still in control and that He had the power to defeat the enemy. Do you remember to thank God for all His marvelous works and all the things He has done for you?

Asaph told God even though He had done all these things the enemy blasphemed Him by tearing down the temple and attacking His people. He begged God to arise against the enemy and cause him to turn away or be defeated.

Many times in the Bible during times of war God would cause what seemed to be natural disasters to happen to confound the enemy and cause them to be defeated. When we look at all the things God has done for us, it is hard to believe there are people who don’t believe and are against Him. We need to pray that they would see the light and come to know God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 74:13-23

13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.
14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
15Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
16 The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.
17 Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.
18 Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.
19 O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
20 Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.
21 O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.
22 Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
23 Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you praise God for His wondrous works?
How do you thank God for His creation?
What makes you realize that there are enemies of God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 74, where the Psalmist reminds us of Your marvelous works. Help us to show gratitude to You for all You have done for us. Help us to praise and thank You for those things. Help us to remember You are our creator, You are all-powerful, You are mighty and You love us. Protect us from the enemy. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “God is My King” (Psalm 74:1-12)

God is My King

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 74:1-12. Psalm 74 is a Psalm of Asaph. He cried out to God for help. He asked God why He was angry. He begged God to remember His people. Have you ever felt like God was angry with you?

This psalm refers to the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldean army. The sanctuary was destroyed and burned to the ground. They burned all the synagogues in the land. This incident is also referred to in 2 Chronicles 36:19, “And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.” Asaph asked God how long he would let the enemy attack His people. Have you ever felt like God removed His hand of protection from you?

Sometimes things happen in life and we don’t understand why or how God could let something like that happen. Sometimes we question God like the Psalmist did in this Scripture. Asaph couldn’t understand why God didn’t stop the enemy from destroying the temple. Sometimes we wonder if God is mad at us as the Psalmist in this Scripture did. We don’t understand the sovereign will of God. We have to trust Him.

Even today there are still those who seek to destroy God’s people. There are wars and rumors of wars going on all the time like the Bible said there would be in Matthew 24:6. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all live in peace? If we look at the circumstances around us sometimes it will cause us to doubt God, but we have to focus not on the circumstances, but on God and how powerful He is.

This is what the Psalmist reminds us at the end of this lesson when he says, “For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” Even though we might not understand everything God does or allows to happen, He is working all things together for our good and His glory (see Romans 8:28).

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 74:1-12

1 [[Maschil of Asaph.]] O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
2 Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
3 Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
4 Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.
5 A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
6 But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
7 They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.
8 They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
9 We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
10 O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
11 Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.
12 For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

Things to think about:

What in your life has caused you to question God?
In what ways have you felt deserted by God?
What do you hold onto when you feel like God has deserted you?
Have you accepted God as your King through His Son, Jesus Christ?
How can we reassure ourselves that God is always there for us and He cares what we are going through?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 74. Thank You that the Psalmist reminds us that even when things aren’t looking good we can still have faith and trust in You. Help us to keep our eyes on You and Your abilities and not our circumstances. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Have Put My Trust in the Lord GOD” (Psalm 73:15-28)

I Have Put My Trust in the Lord GOD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 73:15-28. The Psalmist was discouraged because he had been looking around at the wicked and it seemed as if they were prospering and flourishing.

Then, he went to the sanctuary of God and realized the wicked may look like they are doing good at this time, but the end for them is eternal damnation. Their destruction is looming over their heads. Have you ever felt jealous of those who are wicked, but seem prosperous?

This Psalmist’s heart was grieved once he realized the prosperity of the wicked was temporary. They will face judgment one day. Instead of being envious of them we need to pray for them that they will see the light, turn from their wicked ways, and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.

If you are a believer, you have God on your side. He is there to hold you by the hand and guide you through this life. He has also promised you life eternal with Him in heaven. Don’t let the enemy discourage you by having you compare your life on this earth with the life of the wicked. You have eternal life with Christ. They have eternal damnation if they don’t accept Christ. Instead of being jealous of them pray for them.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 73:15-28

15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
20 As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Things to think about:

Are you sometimes jealous of the wicked that seem to prosper?
How does it make you feel when you are reminded that God is holding you by the hand and leading you through this life?
Do you take comfort in knowing if you are a believer God has prepared a place for you in heaven?
How can we pray for those in our circles whom we aren’t sure live a life for Christ?
What are some other ways we help unbelievers see the light and accept Christ as their Savior?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 73. Thank You for allowing the Psalmist to remind us that our hope is in You. Help us not to compare ourselves to unbelievers. Help us to remember that You love us and want the best for us. Help us to remember that this world is temporary and You have prepared a place for us in heaven. Remind us to pray for unbelievers that they will come to know You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Truly God is Good to Israel” (Psalm 73:1-14)

Truly God is Good to Israel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 73:1-14. Psalm 73 is a Psalm of Asaph. There are twelve psalms that are attributed to Asaph (Psalm 50; 73-83). Asaph is believed to be a Levite who was appointed by David to be the chief of the temple singers. In 1 Chronicles 6:39 we are told that Asaph was the son of Berachiah, the son of Shimea.

We are told in 1 Chronicles 6:31-32, “And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest. And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order.”

Some biblical scholars question whether Asaph was actually the author or if he transcribed these psalms for David. Some even believe that some of the psalms may have been written by Asaph’s descendants.

The Psalmist was disturbed. He knows that God is a good God to the righteous. He has become discouraged in his walk with the Lord. He looks around and sees the wicked prospering. Have you ever felt like this Psalmist did?

Sometimes it seems like the wicked prosper and are successful. They may seem not to have any trouble in their lives, so they become prideful. They may be violent, corrupt, and tell lies, yet they seem to be successful.

The wicked conduct themselves in ungodly ways, but they obtain wealth. The Psalmist is discouraged because of this situation. It may discourage you as well if you compare your life to people like this. Their evil ways will eventually catch up to them.

We have to remember this life is not the only thing we have to look forward to. As believers, we have the promise of the life to come. We have to hold on to the promises of God for the future.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 73:1-14

1 [[A Psalm of Asaph.]] Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.
7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.
8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14 For all the day long have I been plagued and chastened every morning.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you compare yourself to others?
How does it make you feel when you compare yourself to other people?
In what ways have you noticed the wicked prospering?
How can we trust God despite what we see going on around us?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 73. We can relate to the Psalmist, as we often look around and see the same things happening in the world today. We wonder how this could be. As children of God, we compare ourselves to the ungodly and sometimes wonder how these things happen. Help us to realize You have great things planned for us in the future. Help us not to compare ourselves to unbelievers and question You and Your ways. Help us to trust You completely. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD God of Israel” (Psalm 72:13-20)

Blessed Be the LORD God of Israel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 72:13-20. David continues talking about Christ sparing the needy and redeeming their souls from deceit and violence. He says, “Precious will their blood be in His sight.” Why can He say this? I believe it is because their sins have been forgiven and their blood has been cleansed by the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ.

Prayers will be made to Jesus continually and He will be praised daily. There will be plenty of food to eat. The people will flourish like the grass. His name will endure forever. All of the nations will call Him blessed. Blessed is the name of the LORD. The whole earth will be filled with His glory. Verse 20 tells us this is the end of the prayers of David, the son of Jesse.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 72:13-20

13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

Things to think about:

Do you look forward to Jesus coming back?
In what ways do you imagine believers will celebrate when Jesus returns?
What are some of the things we can look forward to at Jesus’ coming?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 72. We see that David looked forward to the coming of the Lord as we do today. Help us to continually watch and pray for His coming. We ask that Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
