Daily Bible Reading “Listen to Your Father and Mother” (Proverbs 6:20-35)

Listen to Your Father and Mother

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 6:20-35. Solomon tells his son, “My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake the teaching of your mother: bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them around your neck.”

Wherever you go, it will lead you; when you sleep, it will keep you; and when you wake up, it will talk with you.

The commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a strange woman.

Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart and don’t let her tempt you with her eyelids. A man is brought to a piece of bread by means of a harlot: and the adulteress will hunt for a man of high value.

Can a man take fire to his chest, and his clothes not get burned? Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not get burned? In other words, if you play with fire, you are going to get burnt.

So he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; whoever touches her will not be innocent.

Men don’t despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy his hunger; but if he is found, he will be made to repay seven times what he stole; he will give all that he owns trying to repay the debt.

A man who commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he who does it destroys his own soul. He will be wounded and dishonored; and his reproach will not be taken away.

Jealousy is the rage of a man: he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he be content, even though you give him many gifts.

Have you noticed how many times Solomon has already warned his son about getting involved with strange or adulteress women? Why do you think he is so adamant about these warnings? Could it be because this is one of the things that the enemy uses most to tempt us to sin?

As parents it is our duty to warn our children, as Solomon did, about the snares of this world. Solomon encourages his son to listen to his instructions and those of his mother. He is trying to keep his son from getting involved in sin.

Solomon is speaking to his son in this Scripture, but as women and mothers it is also our duty to resist temptation and to teach our children about the traps that the enemy uses to try to trip us up.

Many times if we would have listened to the warnings that the LORD placed in our paths by our parents and others or through the Scriptures, we could have saved ourselves a lot of pain and heartache.

God is faithful to us. He expects us to not only be faithful to Him, but also to be faithful to our husband or wife, if we are married.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 6:20-35

20 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in theday of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

Things to think about:

  • What is Solomon’s concern for his son in this Scripture?
  • What are some of the things he warns his son of concerning this matter?
  •  What is Solomon’s warning about the jealousy of man?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we Solomon’s concern for his son. He wants to make sure that he is aware of the dangers of getting involved with an adulteress or strange woman. Help us to guard our hearts and lives in this area. Help those of us who are married to be faithful to our husband or wife. Please forgive us if we have failed You in this area. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
