About the Book:

Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet is a Daily Bible Reading Study by Deborah H. Bateman. Psalm 119 is in the center of the Bible and is the longest chapter in the Bible. Psalm 119 is about the importance of God’s Word in the life of the Psalmist and in your life as well.

Psalm 119 is broken up into twenty-two stanzas of eight verses each so Deborah crated twenty-two short daily devotional lessons which can be used for personal daily devotions or group Bible studies. Each stanza in Psalm 119 starts with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet so you will also learn about one letter of the Hebrew alphabet with each lesson.

Daily Bible Reading “Thy Word is Forever Settled in Heaven” (Psalm 119:89-96)

Thy Word is Forever Settled in Heaven

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:89-96. This portion of Psalm 119 starts with LAMED, which is the twelfth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and numerically represents 30. The Psalmist proclaims that God’s Word is forever settled in heaven. This is a promise we can base our life on.

God is eternal; He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is not going to change His mind about loving us. He is faithful and His faithfulness is to all generations. God created the earth and everything in the earth, and it still abides today. His servants continue serving Him according to His ordinances.

The Psalmist declares if God’s law hadn’t been his delight, he would have perished in his affliction. He promises he’ll never forget the precepts of the LORD, because they’ve preserved his life. He asks God to save him, because he has sought the precepts of God.

He says the wicked have waited to destroy him, but he kept his focus on God’s testimonies. He declares he’s seen the limits of all perfection, but God’s commandments are eternal.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:89-96

89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

91 They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.

92 Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

93 I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.

94 I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts.

95 The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

96 I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad.

Things to Think About:

Do you find comfort in knowing God’s Word is settled forever in heaven?

Do you treasure the faithfulness of God?

Do you try to learn the ways of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119, where the Psalmist reminds us that Your word is eternally settled in heaven. That is something we can take great comfort in, knowing that You are not going to change Your mind. Your promises are eternal. Help us to treasure You and Your word and hide Your word in our hearts that we might not sin against You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “My Hope is in Thy Word” (Psalm 119:49-56)

My Hope is in Thy Word

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:49-56. This portion of Scripture from Psalm 119 starts with ZAIN, the seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The letter ZAIN is symbolic of a sword, which is used to attack or defend oneself. The Psalmist starts this portion of Scripture asking God to remember His word, in which he found hope. He says God’s Word comforted him during his affliction, because it has quickened him.

He has been in great distress because of the proud, but he has not strayed from God’s law. The Psalmist says he remembers God’s judgments and comforted himself in them. Does reading the Bible and remembering God’s promises comfort you?

He has been horrified by the wicked that have forsaken God’s law. He has held to God’s statutes and made them his songs. He says he remembered God’s Word in the night and it comforted him. He was able to do this because he had studied God’s Word and hid it in his heart, so when he needed help he could recall it.

Have you ever woke up in the night and been afraid, then thought of a verse from the Bible or a Christian song and it comforted you or gave you hope? If I awake at night I will either quote a Scripture, start singing a song silently or pray and it helps comfort me so I can go back to sleep.

Using this same tactic will also help if you are worried about something. If you take your mind off your problem and put your thoughts on Scripture, or start singing a song of praise to God, it will help give you hope and comfort your soul. Try this the next time you are in distress and see if it helps you. It works for me.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:49-56

49 ZAIN. Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

51 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.

52 I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.

53 Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.

54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

55 I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.

56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

Things to Think About:

Do you find hope in the word of the LORD?

Does it encourage you to quote Scripture?

Does it lift your spirit to sings songs of praise to the LORD?

Does it help you to cope with the trials of life when you remember how much God loves you?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist says he finds hope in Your word. He knows You love him and are working on his behalf. Help us to find hope in Your word and to trust You as You work things out in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Have Mercy on Me” (Psalm 119:41-48)

Have Mercy on Me

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:41-48. This portion of Scripture starts with the Hebrew letter VAU. The image of the letter VAU (VAV, WAV, WAW) is a nail or hook. Both have the function of fixing something. The nail’s function is joining two parts together.*

The Psalmist begs God for His mercy to come to him and grant him salvation according to His word. Then, he will be able to answer those who reproach him, because of his trust in the word of the LORD.

He asks God not to take the word of truth from his mouth, because he finds his hope in God’s judgments. His desire is to keep the law forever and walk at liberty as he seeks the precepts of God.

The Psalmist declares that he will speak of the precepts of God before kings and not be ashamed. He is totally committed to the ways of God. He loves and delights in the commandments of God. He promises to lift his hands and meditate on the commandments and statutes of God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:41-48

41 VAU. Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word.

42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.

44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.

45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.

47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Things to Think About:

Do you ask God for mercy?

Do you treasure the gift of salvation?

How can we walk in liberty with God?

Are you ashamed of the gospel?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us of Your mercy toward us. Thank You for Your mercy and for the gift of salvation. Help us to treasure You and Your word. Help us to walk in Your ways all the days of our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “His Mercy Endures Forever” (Psalm 118:1-29)

His Mercy Endures Forever

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 118:1-29. Psalm 118 is a prayer and song of praise to the LORD. This is said to be the song they sang the night of the Lord’s Supper. Over and over again you will see the words, “His mercy endureth forever.”

I think the best thing you can do is just read the whole chapter and notice every time you see the word LORD, what the Scripture has to say about Him. Notice how in this Scripture they praise the LORD. When we go to Him in prayer, do we praise Him or do we just ask Him for what we need or whatever our concerns are?

Maybe if we spent more time praising the Lord for who He is and for what He has done we would see His presence in our lives even more. My hope is that as we look at these different Scriptures and see how they praise the LORD, we will learn to do a better job of letting Him know how much we love and appreciate Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 118:1-29

1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
3 Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
4 Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
5 I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.
6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.
8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
10 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.
11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
12 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
13 Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.
14 The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.
15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
16 The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.
18 The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:
20 This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.
21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head [stone] of the corner.
23 This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
27 God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.
28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
29 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Things to think about:

What are some things for which we can give thanks to the LORD?
Why does the Psalmist say it’s better to put your trust in God than man?
What is your favorite verse from this chapter?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You that Your mercy endures forever. LORD, we put our trust and our confidence in You and not in man. You are our strength and our song, and You have become our salvation. We will give thanks to You and praise You forever. We love You, LORD. Amen.

It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 4 Chapters 91-118 contains thirty-six Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day.
