Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Heals the People” (Matthew 9:20-38)

Jesus Heals the People

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 9:20-38. In this Scripture, Jesus goes about teaching, preaching, and healing the people from all types of sicknesses and diseases. There was a woman, who had been sick for twelve years. She touched Jesus’ garment and Jesus tells her that her faith has made her whole.

Jesus goes to a ruler’s house and takes a maid by the hand and brings her back to life. He also heals two blind men. He asked them if they believed that He could heal them, then He tells them because of their faith, it was so. Jesus casts out demons from a dumb man, who was then able to speak. Do you see how important our belief and faith in Jesus is? It was because of their faith in Him that He did these things.

The last few verses of this Scripture really touched my heart. I have heard it before, but today it brought me to tears. Jesus talks about the people being scattered abroad, as sheep with no shepherd. He says the harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few and He asks them to pray that the Lord of the harvest will send forth laborers. If you are a Christian, have you ever thought about how God would have you to labor for His harvest?

If you are not a Christian, have you thought about receiving Christ as your Savior? All you have to do is pray and ask Him to forgive you of your sins, come into your heart and life, and believe that He is able to forgive you. Matthew 9:20-38

20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.
31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.
33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.
36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

 

Things to think about:

  • How would you describe your faith?
  • Do you believe in Jesus?
  • Do you believe Jesus has the power to heal people, not only of their sickness and diseases, but also of their sins?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture that tells us how Jesus went about teaching, preaching, and healing people. Help us to have the faith these people had, so we too can experience Your miraculous power. We pray LORD, for the harvest that You would send Your laborers to gather people to You. LORD, show us what You would have us do concerning these things. LORD, we pray for those who don’t know You, that You might open their hearts and minds to Your Word and help them to believe. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD, Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5:12-20)

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 5:12-20. This Scripture is a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Remember, this is Jesus talking. This passage starts off by saying to rejoice and be glad, great is your reward in heaven for being persecuted for Christ’s sake. That is a hard thing to do. The only way you could do it is by the power of God living in you. There were many others who came before us who suffered great persecution. For example, Paul was imprisoned because of his teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Scripture goes on to say you are the salt of the earth. Salt is used for purification. Our teaching of the gospel is to help purify the world. Next, Jesus says you are the light of the world. Jesus encourages them to let their light shine so when people see their good works they glorify God. We are to shine the light of God into the world to help destroy the darkness of this world.

Jesus says He didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. He did that when He died on the cross for our sins. He says we should practice and teach the laws of God, so our reward would be great in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus tells them that their righteousness should exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. That is why Jesus died on the cross to cover our sins, because God knew, as human beings, it was impossible for us to keep all the laws of God. So, He sent Jesus to be the atonement for our sins, but we have to accept Him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 5:12-20

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you accepted Jesus Christ as the atonement for your sins?
  • If so, would you consider yourself to be the salt of the world?
  • How do you let your light shine for Jesus Christ?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You, LORD, for Your Word. Help us to be, as You said in this Scripture, the salt and light of the world. LORD, we know that without Your Son dying on the cross for our sins, none of us would be worthy to enter the kingdom of heaven. We have all failed You. Please forgive us of our sins. We love You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Calls Disciples to Follow Him” (Matthew 4:12-25)

Jesus Calls Disciples to Follow Him

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 4:12-25. In this Scripture, Jesus heard that John was put in prison, so He left Nazareth and went to Capernaum. It had been spoken by Esaias the prophet that these people would see great light. (Isaiah 9) Jesus preached to the people to repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This was the same message that John the Baptist preached to the people.

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He called four fishermen: Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John. He said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Notice that the Scripture says they stopped what they were doing and followed Him immediately. How do you respond when Jesus asks you to do something? Are you like the disciples who obeyed Him immediately, or do you put it off as long as you possibly can?

Jesus went throughout Galilee teaching, preaching, and healing people from all types of diseases and great multitudes of people followed him.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 4:12-25

12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

 

Things to think about:

  • Can you imagine being put in prison for preaching the gospel?
  • When Jesus asks you to do something, do you obey Him immediately?
  • Is your faith strong enough to believe that God can heal the sick?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture from the book of Matthew that tells us how You went about teaching, preaching and healing people. Help us to be fishers of men. Use us to tell others about You. From this Scripture we learn that You are able to heal all kinds of diseases. Give us faith in You for such things as this. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus Tempted by the Devil” (Matthew 4:1-11)

Jesus Tempted by the Devil

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 4:1-11. In this Scripture, Jesus was led by the Spirit to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and nights, and then He was hungry. Wouldn’t you be hungry if you fasted forty days and nights? Of course you would.

The devil knew Jesus was hungry and tried to tempt Him to turn the rocks into bread, saying, “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Jesus answers him by quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” This was a physical temptation. This is the same temptation Satan used against Eve in the garden.

Then in Matthew 4:5 the devil takes Jesus to the holy city, and sets him on a pinnacle of the temple and tells him to cast himself down. Jesus quotes Psalm 91:11-12, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in (their) hands, lest thy dash thy foot against a stone.” This is a spiritual temptation for the pride of life.

In Matthew 4:8 the devil takes Jesus to a high mountain and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. Then he tells Jesus he’ll give Him all this if He worships him. Again, Jesus answers him with Scripture. This is a psychological temptation. This time Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13 and Deuteronomy 10:20. Jesus tells Satan, “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Here we see Jesus basically tells him to get away and leave Him alone. Sometimes we need to do that as well.

Notice every time the devil tempts Jesus, He quotes Scripture. This is why we need to read and study the Bible, so when temptation comes our way we can say this is what the Word of God says. We see also the same ways the enemy tempted Jesus are the ways he tries to tempt us. So, we need to be ready with our armor of Scripture to defend ourselves.

After the devil leaves Jesus, the angels came and ministered to Him. We can also use the Scripture to minister to ourselves and to give us comfort when we have a bout with the enemy.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 4:1-11

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

 

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever fasted? If so, for how long?
  • Can you imagine how hungry Jesus must have been after fasting for forty days and nights?
  • Have you ever tried quoting Scripture when the enemy tempted you?
  • I challenge you to use the Scripture when temptation comes.

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this example in Your Word of how we are to handle temptation. When we are tempted help us to recall the Scripture to respond to our tempter. Help us to not let anything come before You. We love you, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Jesus is Risen” (Matthew 28:1-20)

Jesus is Risen

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 28:1-20. In this Scripture, Jesus had risen from the grave. It was the dawn of the first day of the week and Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to visit the grave. What did they find when they got there?

There was a great earthquake and the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone from the door of the grave, and sat on it. His appearance was as bright as lightning and his clothes were as white as snow. It scared the soldiers so badly they fainted. How would you have reacted if you were one of the soldiers at the tomb that day?

The angel told the women not to be afraid, he knew they were looking for Jesus and told them, “He is not here, He is risen, Come, see where He laid.” Then the angel told the women to go and tell His disciples Jesus had risen and He would be in Galilee waiting for them. Can you imagine how scared and excited the women were? As the women were hurrying to go tell the disciples the news, Jesus met them, and they bowed down at His feet and worshiped Him. Jesus told them to go tell the disciples to meet Him in Galilee.

The soldiers who were keeping watch over Jesus’ grave went to the city to tell the chief priests what happened. The chief priests and elders bribed the soldiers with a large sum of money and told them to say the disciples came and stole Jesus’ body during the night. Matthew says that story was still being reported among the Jews.

The disciples went to Galilee to meet Jesus where He told them to meet Him.  When they saw Him they worshiped Him, but some of them doubted. Jesus told them, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” This is something we should be still doing today, going and telling people about Jesus. Thank God for our risen Lord.

 

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 28:1-20

1  In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
2  And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3  His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4  And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
14 And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

 

Things to think about:

  • How would you react if you went to visit a grave and an angel of the Lord was there?
  • How happy do you think Mary and the other Mary were to see Jesus?
  • Do you wonder why some of the disciples doubted when Jesus told them previously He would meet them in Galilee?
  • Do you think even they found it hard to believe He had risen?

 

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You the Bible tells us Jesus is Risen. Thank You for the sacrifice He made on the cross for our sins. Help us to never forget what a wonderful gift You have given us through Your Son. Help us to go and tell people about Jesus and how they can be saved from their sins. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.
