Daily Bible Reading “The Rains Came” (Genesis 7:1-12)

The Rains Came

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 7:1-12. In chapter seven we see that the LORD told Noah for him and his household to go into the ark. Noah was chosen because he had been righteous before God in his generation.

The LORD instructed Noah to take with him in the ark every clean beast by sevens, both male and female: and of the beasts that are not clean by two, both male and female. He also told Noah to take the fowls of the air by sevens, both male and female. He did this in order to keep seed alive on the earth.

The LORD warned Noah that in seven days he would cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. The LORD said that every living thing that He had made would be destroyed from the face of the earth.

Noah did exactly as the LORD commanded him. Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives went into the ark because the flood waters were about to come. They also loaded up the clean beasts, the unclean beasts, the fowls, and every creeping thing upon the earth, two by two into the ark, the male and female of each kind, as God commanded Noah. Wonder how Noah and his family felt as they loaded the ark? Wonder what the rest of the people thought as they saw Noah loading the ark?

After seven days flood waters came upon the earth, exactly like the LORD told Noah they would. It was the 600^th year of Noah’s life, in the second month of the year, on the 17^th day of the month, when the fountains of the deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened and the rain began to fall. The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. Can you imagine being stuck in the ark for forty days and forty nights with all the animals?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 7:1-12

1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.

5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.

6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,

9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Things to think about:

Who did God tell Noah he could take with him in the ark?

How many of each kind of animal did God tell Noah to take in the ark?

How long did it rain during the flood?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we see that Noah and his family along with the animals were loading into the ark as You instructed them to do. Help us to have the kind of faith Noah did and follow Your instructions as he did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Noah’s Ark” (Genesis 6:14-22)

Noah’s Ark

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 6:14-22. In this portion of chapter six God gives Noah the instructions to build the ark. The LORD tells Noah to make himself an ark of gopher wood. He instructs him to make rooms in the ark and to pitch it inside and out, which would make it waterproof.

God even gave Noah the dimensions that he was to make the ark. He told Noah to make the ark 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

God also instructed Noah to put a window in the top of the ark. The window was to be one cubit. He told Noah to put the door in the side of the ark with second and third stories in the ark.

This was a big boat. Can you imagine how long it took Noah to build such a boat?

God told Noah that he was going to flood the earth and destroy all flesh and every living thing on the earth would perish.

God established a covenant with Noah that he, his wife, sons, and sons’ wives would be safe from the flood by taking refuge in the ark.

He also instructed Noah to bring two of every living thing into the ark, one male and one female of each to keep them alive for the future. Noah was to include fowls of every kind, cattle, and every creeping thing, two of every sort.

Noah also had to include food for his family and all the animals inside the ark to feed them during this time. Noah trusted God completely. He followed God’s instructions and did everything that the LORD commanded him to do. He had a great faith in God in order to carry out this enormous task. Has God ever asked you to do something that seemed impossible?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 6:14-22

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Things to think about:

Can you imagine building a boat large enough to house all your family and all the animals?

What are some reasons God would spare one man and his family from the flood?

Can you imagine being the caregiver for all the animals in a boat during this time?

What kind of faith did it take for Noah to follow God’s instructions explicitly?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this passage we are amazed at the whole idea of the ark and only one family being spared. It is also astonishing to think of one family taking care of all the animals during the flood so they could be spared. No doubt Noah was a great man of faith to follow Your instructions as he did. Help us to have faith like Noah to do anything You ask of us, knowing that what You instruct us is for our own good. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Noah Found Grace” (Genesis 6:1-13)

Noah Found Grace

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 6:1-13. In chapter six we learn that as men began to reproduce on the earth, and started having daughters. The sons of God were in awe of the daughters of men; and took as many wives as they chose.

The LORD was grieved and said, “My spirit will not always be with man, because he is human as well: now his days will be a 120 years.”

There were giants in the earth during that time. The sons of God had relationships with the daughters of men, and had children by them. They became mighty men of old, men of notoriety.

GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that all the thoughts of their heart were constantly evil.

The LORD regretted that he had created man. Their wickedness grieved his heart. The LORD decided that he would abolish man from the earth. Not only would he destroy man, but also the beast, creeping things, and fowls of the air; because it made him sad that he created them.

Noah was the only man living during this time that found grace in the eyes of the LORD. Noah walked with God. He was a just man, faultless among his peers. Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The people of the earth had become immoral before God and the earth was full of violence. God beheld the condition of the earth, and saw that it was corrupt. All living things had violated God’s manner on the earth.

God told Noah, “The end of all flesh is come before me; because the earth is filled with violence through them; watch, I will destroy them with the earth.”

Can you imagine God being so upset with man that He would want to destroy them?

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 6:1-13

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Things to think about:

Why was God upset with His creation?

What did God want to do to His creation?

Who is the one man that found grace in God’s eyes during this time?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we see the condition of the world had become so bad that You wanted to destroy everything You had created. We can only imagine how You must feel about the world and the condition it is in today. Please forgive us of all the ways we have failed You. Help us to repent and turn back to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The Generations of Adam” (Genesis 5:1-11)

The Generations of Adam

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 5:1-11. Genesis chapter 5 is a record of the descendants of Adam, the first man. God created man in His likeness and called him Adam. God created both man and woman; and blessed them, when they were created.

Adam lived 130 years, and had a son in his own likeness, after his image; and named him Seth. Adam lived 800 years after he fathered Seth. Adam also had more sons and daughters. Adam lived a total of nine 930 years before he died.

Seth was 105 years old when he had Enos, whose name means “man.” Seth lived 807 years after he had Enos, and fathered more sons and daughters. Seth lived a total of 912 years before he died.

Enos was 90 years old when he had Cainan, whose name means “possession.” Enos lived 815 years after he had Cainan, and had more sons and daughters. Enos lived a total 905 years before he died. We will continue this list in the next lesson.

It’s amazing to see those who had children at 100 years old or older and lived to be hundreds of years old. It is hard for us to imagine such in our day and time. Some biblical scholars believe that God’s original intention for mankind was to live to be up to 1000 years old before the fall of mankind.

When genealogies are listed in the Bible, they don’t include all the people who were born during this time. The point of these lists is to highlight certain names.

Notice that even though we know from previous Scripture that Adam and Eve had at least two other sons, Cain and Abel, before Seth was born, they are not mentioned in this Scripture.

The object of the genealogies in the Bible is to show the blood line of Jesus Christ starting with the descendants of Adam, then Abraham, then David, and finally leading up to Jesus.

The only other place that the list of genealogies is addressed like it is in Genesis chapter 5 is in Matthew chapter 1, where it begins, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Some biblical scholars refer to Jesus as the second Adam.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 5:1-11

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:

7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.

9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

Things to think about:

Can you imagine what it would be like to children at 100 years old or older?

Can you imagine living to be hundreds of years old?

Are there any names you recognize so far in this list? If so, which ones?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage and look at the descendants of Adam we marvel at their longevity. It is hard for us to imagine living that long in this day and age. We thank You, LORD for the time we do have here on this earth. Help us to use our time wisely and to share the gospel with others all the days of our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Cain Leaves Eden” (Genesis 4:16-26)

Cain Leaves Eden

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Genesis 4:16-26. After Cain sinned against God and killed his brother, he left the presence of the LORD, as instructed, and went to dwell in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Even though Cain sinned against God, God still blessed him by allowing him to live and have a family. We are not told in this Scripture who Cain took to be his wife, only that he had relations with his wife; she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch, which means “dedicated.” Cain also built a city, and named the city after his son, Enoch.

Enoch had a son; he named Irad, which means “fleet.” Irad had a son, he named Mehujael, which means “smitten by God.” Mehujael had a son named Methusael, which means “who is of God.” Methusael had a son named Lamech, which means “powerful.”

Lamech had two wives: one of his wives was named Adah, and the other wife was called Zillah.

Adah gave birth to Jabal, which means “stream of water.” He was the chief of the people who lived in tents, and raised livestock.

His brother’s name was Jubal, which means “stream.” He was the inventor of musical instruments, such as the harp and organ.

Zillah, gave birth to Tubalcain, which means, “thou will be brought of cain.” He was an instructor of every metal craftsman who fabricated brass and iron. Zillah also gave birth to a daughter named Naamah, which means “loveliness.” Notice that Naamah is the first girl to be mentioned in this family.

Lamech told his wives, Adah and Zillah, listen to me: A young man tried to wound me, and in self-defense, I killed him. If the LORD will take vengeance for Cain seven times, surely, He will avenge me seventy-seven times.

These numbers are repeated in Matthew 18:21-22, “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, which they named him Seth. The name Seth means “compensation.” Eve said, “For God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”

There was also a son born to Seth, who was named Enos, which means “man.” At that time men began to proclaim the name of the LORD.

I find it interesting to see what some of the names mean, so I have included their meanings in this lesson for you. During biblical times the names were not chosen just because they liked the way it sounded. Many times the names they named their children had significant meanings.

In this day and age, we may not consider what the name means, as much as if we like the way it sounds. Maybe we should pay more attention to the names we give our children. We wouldn’t want to mark them with a negative connotation by what we name them.

Daily Bible Reading:

Genesis 4:16-26

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

Things to think about:

Why did Cain leave Eden?

Where did Cain go when he left Eden?

What was the secret that Lamech told his wives?

How did God bless Adam and Eve in this Scripture?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this passage, we see your grace and mercy on Cain, even though he sinned against You. You still allowed him to live and have a family. We also see You blessed Adam and Eve with another son. Help us to realize that when we mess up, if we repent and ask for forgiveness, You are willing to forgive us. You are always there with open arms waiting for us to come back to You. Even though this is so, help us to strive to live holy and acceptable in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
