Kiss the Son

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 2:1-12. The Psalmist tells us to “Kiss the Son.” But first he asks the question, “Why do the heathen rage.” This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm, which means it talks about Jesus. Acts 4:25 gives us a clue that David is the writer of this Psalm, Acts 4:25, “Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?” It asks the same question that is asked in Psalm 2:1.

The Psalmist says the kings and rulers of this world come together to take issue against God and His Son, Jesus. God laughs in the heavens at their foolishness. He warns them with His wrath. Some people don’t get the message.

There are many Scriptures in the Bible that refer to this Psalm. One of them is Acts 13:33, “God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.” It even mentions the second psalm in the Scripture.

Psalm 2:10-12, the Holy Spirit exhorts the kings and rulers of this world to serve the LORD with fear and trembling. He speaks saying, “Kiss the Son.” He admonishes them to accept Jesus as their Savior and worship Him lest they cause Him to be angered against them and they perish. We are reminded those who trust in the LORD are blessed.

What would the world be like today if the leaders of this world served the LORD?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 2:1-12

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

What will happen to those who put their trust in the LORD?

Have you put your trust in the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who You sacrificed for our sins. Help us to love and worship Him. Help the rulers of this world to serve You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or groups.

Daily Bible Reading “Delight in the Law of the LORD” (Psalm 1:1-6)

Delight in the Law of the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 1:1-6. The Psalmist declares blessed are those who don’t seek counsel from the ungodly, or hang around with sinners, or those who are scornful.

Their delight is in the Word of God and they meditate on it night and day. They will be like a tree planted by the riverside. They’ll produce fruit in due season. Whatever they do prospers.

This is not true for those who are ungodly. They are like the chaff (husks of grain) that blows away in the wind. Their ways are unstable. They don’t observe the laws of the land much less the laws of God. They have no place among the righteous.

There are many laws that we observe. There are the laws of the land, and the laws of nature. But, the laws of God are the most beneficial of all laws to believers.

The LORD guides the path of the righteous, but the ways of the ungodly will lead to destruction.

Daily Bible Scripture:

Psalm 1:1-6

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Things to think about:

Who does the LORD say will be blessed?

What does the LORD say about those who are ungodly?

Do you delight in the law of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father:

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. We see in this Scripture that those who delight in Your Word are blessed. You guide the steps of the righteous, but the wicked are bound for destruction. Help us to delight in Your Word and meditate on it day and night. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Parable of the Talents” (Matthew 25:14-30)

Parable of the Talents

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:14-30. In this Scripture, Jesus is telling the disciples another parable about the kingdom of heaven. He says it is like a man who was traveling to a far country.

The man called his servants and gave them his goods to keep until he returned. He gave each one of them according to their ability. One he gave five talents, one two, and one he gave one talent. What do you think the servants did with their talents while the man was gone?

A talent was made of silver and each one weighed fifty to eighty pounds. When the man returned he found the man who had five talents doubled his, the one who had two talents doubled his, but, the one who had only one talent buried his talent in the ground. Why do you think he buried it in the ground?

He said he was afraid, so instead of taking what his lord gave him and trying to make more with it, he hid it in the ground. Isn’t it funny how we let fear cripple us?

The man was happy with the ones who doubled their talents and told them he would give them more. But the one who buried his displeased the lord.

So, the Lord told his servants to take his talent from him and give it to the one who had ten talents. Then he wanted them to cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness.

Remember, this is a parable about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus went away and He is coming back someday. He left each one of His servants with talents and we’ll all be accountable to Him for how we use those talents. Everything we have He provided and every gift we have He gave us. So, we need to make sure we are using our money, our time, and our talents in a way that will honor Him when He returns.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:14-30

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Things to think about:

Which of the men were most responsible with their talents?
Which of the men were least responsible with their talents?
What did the man do with the one who was least responsible?
How are you using the talents God has given you for Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this parable of the talents, help us examine ourselves and see how we are using what You have given to us. Help us to use what you have provided for us wisely, so at Jesus’ return, He’ll be pleased with us. Help us to not be hearers of the Word only, but doers of the Word, as well. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD, Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Nobody Knows the Hour of His Coming” (Matthew 24:36-51)

Nobody Knows the Hour of His Coming

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 24:36-51. In this Scripture, Jesus tells them no man, not even the angels in heaven knows when He’ll come again. He says, only His Father in heaven knows when He’ll return.

Jesus tells them it will be the same as when Noah was building the ark: people were going about their normal daily activities with no idea when the flood was coming.

Jesus reminds us to watch for Him since we don’t know when He is coming. Jesus tells them stories of examples where people were caught unaware because they weren’t watching for Him.

Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” This is the same thing Jesus is trying to warn us about in this Scripture.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 24:36-51

36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Things to think about:

Are you watching for the coming of the Lord?
Are you ready for Jesus’ coming?
Who does Jesus say knows the time of His coming?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please help us to always be watching for Your coming, so we won’t be caught unaware. Thank You for this Scripture that tells us to be on the watch. We love You, Lord. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Be Content in Christ” (Philippians 4:10-23)

Be Content in Christ

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Philippians 4:10-23. We see in Paul’s letter to the Philippians that Paul was rejoicing because the Philippians cared for him. What did Paul mean when he said they lacked opportunity? The Philippians lost touch with Paul for two years, while he was in prison. They didn’t know where he was. Once they heard that Paul was in prison in Rome they reconnected with him.

Paul says he learned that whatever state he was in to be content. Paul knew what it meant to be full and he knew how it felt to be hungry. He had times in his life of having plenty and times of lack. He learned through it all to be content in Christ.

This is a lesson we all need to learn from Paul. It is easy to be content when things are going right in our lives. It is much harder to be content when life is difficult. We need to learn to trust God enough to be content no matter what our circumstances are.

Sometimes God puts us in difficult circumstances so we can learn to trust Him more. If life was always easy we would think we could do everything on our own. Sometimes it is in the difficult times that we learn to be dependent on God. We learn not to do things in our own strength. We learn that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.

Two of my favorite verses are in this passage. The first one is Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” This is a verse that has given me strength from time to time in my life. I have quoted it over and over in difficult times and it has strengthened me to endure the battles of this life.

The next one is Philippians 4:19: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” This verse I have claimed during times of doubt and concern about the future and it has comforted me and calmed my spirit knowing I could trust God to supply all of my needs.

Paul thanks the Philippians for their support of his ministry. The Philippians were the only ones who supported Paul financially in the beginning of his ministry. Paul was thankful that the Philippians cared for him. He was also happy that they were going to be blessed because of their fruitful giving to God’s work.

Paul thanks the Philippians for the offerings that they sent to him by Epaphroditus. He says it was well pleasing to God. Paul trusted God to supply all his needs. Paul also trusted God to supply the needs of the Philippians according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Paul gave God the glory for everything.

Paul closes this letter by sending a salutation to every saint. He wanted to acknowledge them all and thank them for everything they did for him. Paul tells the Philippians that all the brethren and saints with him salute them also, especially those of the house of Caesar. Paul ends the letter by saying, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”

Daily Bible Reading:

Philippians 4:10-23

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

14 Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.

15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.

16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.

17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

20 Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

21 Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren which are with me greet you.

22 All the saints salute you, chiefly they that are of Caesar’s household.

Things to think about:

In what ways do you depend on God to meet your needs?

In what ways do you lean on God for strength?

In what ways have you become content in Christ?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in the book of Philippians. We see that Paul says he has learned to be content with his life no matter the circumstances. Help us to be content in Christ. Paul was thankful for the Philippians and their contribution to his ministry. Help us to be thankful for the people You bring into our lives to help support us and lift us up to You in prayer. Paul trusted You to supply all of his needs. Help us to have the same kind of faith and trust in You as Paul did. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
