Deliver My Soul, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 120:1-7. Psalm 120 is the first of fifteen Psalms that is considered to be “A Song of degrees” which includes Psalm 120-134 and means they were sung when people traveled to Jerusalem.

The Psalmist in this Scripture is having a problem with people lying. He calls out for God to deliver him from those who have lying lips and a deceitful tongue. He asks, “What can be done to this lying tongue?”

Proverbs 10:18 says, “He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.”

Proverbs 12:22 tells us that “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

How does it make you feel when someone tells lies about you? The Psalmist says he has been around those who lie and despise peace for too long. He was weary of their deceitful ways. The Psalmist prefers peace, but when he speaks, the others with him are for war.

Have you ever lived around someone with whom you couldn’t get along? You tried to have peace, but all they wanted was to fight. They tell lies and make up stories that are not true. Being in a situation like that makes for a miserable existence.

I think this is what the Psalmist is speaking of. He was asking God for deliverance from the situation.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 120:1-7

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.
7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

Things to think about:

Do you know anyone who would rather tell lies than the truth any day?
How hard is it to have a relationship with those who are deceitful?
Are you an instrument of peace or of war?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 120, where the Psalmist asks for deliverance from lying lips, deceitful tongues, and those who hate peace. Help us to always be truthful and never deceitful. Help us to be instruments of peace and not of war. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 by Deborah H. Bateman is 30th book in the Daily Bible Reading Series. The book of Psalms contains 150 chapters. Deborah divided The Book of Psalms into five books to make it easier to read and study. Each book contains approximately thirty chapters from the book of Psalms.

Psalm 119 will not be included in The Book of Psalms since Deborah has already published a book about it called: Psalm 119: Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet. The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear My Cry, O LORD” (Psalm 119:169-176)

Hear My Cry, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:169-176. This is the last stanza in Psalm 119. It starts with TAU, which may also be TAW, TAV, or TAF. It’s the twenty-second and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. TAU represents the letter T, and its numerical value is 400. It is also thought to represent a signature or an inscription. A popular Hebrew saying is “From ALEPH to TAF” which is equivalent to the English saying “From A to Z,” and also means from beginning to end.

The Psalmist cries out to the LORD to hear his prayer, give him understanding of the Word of God, and deliver him according to the promises of God. He promises to give praise to the LORD when He has taught him the statutes of God.

He declares that he will speak of the Word of the LORD because all His commandments are righteous. He asks God to reach out His hand to help him, since he has chosen the precepts of God. He reminds the LORD that he has waited for His salvation and has found delight in the laws of God.

The Psalmist begs God to help him through the judgments of God and let his soul live so it can praise Him. He admits to the LORD that he has gone astray like a lost sheep and asks God to seek after him, as His servant, because he remembers the commandments of the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:169-176

169 TAU. Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.

170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.

171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.

172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight.

175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me.

176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Things to Think About:

Do you ask God for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of His Word?

Have you ever wondered if God heard your prayers?

Have you ever cried out to God to help you out of a situation you got yourself into?

Have you ever strayed from God?

Did you notice that when you seek God, you will find Him right where you left Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist cries out for You to hear, and answer his prayer. Help us to bring our cares and concerns to You in prayer. Help us to stay faithful to Your Word. Help us not to stray as lost sheep, but to stay close to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Great Peace Have They Which Love Thy Law” (Psalm 119:161-168)

Great Peace Have They Which Love Thy Law

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:161-168. This stanza from Psalm 119 starts with SCHIN, the twenty-first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Both SCHIN and sin are represented with the same letter. The Psalmist says he has been persecuted by princes even though they had no reason to persecute him, yet his heart is in awe of God’s Word.

He has suffered great persecution, but still rejoices in the Word of the LORD. He hates lying, but loves the law of God. He says he prays seven times a day and praises God because of His righteous judgments.

Verse 165, is one of my favorite verses, it says, “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” Even though he is going through all the persecution and turmoil in his life, the Psalmist finds peace in God’s Word and knows that God is there to see him through the situation.

The Psalmist reminds the LORD that he has put his hope in God’s salvation and done His commandments. He has kept the testimonies of the LORD and loved them more than anything. He has walked before God by keeping his commandments, testimonies, and precepts because He loves the LORD.

Do you find it hard sometimes to understand why you are going through troubled times, when you feel like you have been trying to walk in the ways of the LORD? The Psalmist in Psalm 119 seems to be wondering the same thing, because he keeps reminding the LORD of how much he loves and keeps the precepts, testimonies, and commandments of God. If we focus on God even when we are going through troubled times, we can have peace in the midst of the storms of our lives.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:116-168

161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.

162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.

163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.

164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.

165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.

167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.

168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

Things to Think About:

Can you claim verse 165 even when you are going through troubled times?

Do you love the Word of God?

Do you try to keep the Word of God before you daily to remind you of His promises?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist tells us that even though he is persecuted he still loves Your Word. Help us not to base our love for You on our circumstances. Help us to be able to claim verse 165 in our daily lives and keep our hearts and minds fixed on You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Meditate in Thy Word” (Psalm 119:145-152)

I Meditate in Thy Word

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:145-152. This portion of Psalm 119 starts with KOPH, which is the nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It represents the letter Q and the number 100. The Psalmist cries out for the LORD to hear him and promises he will keep the statutes of the LORD. He tells God that if He will save him he will keep his testimonies.

He wakes up early in the morning and cries out to the LORD saying, that he hoped in thy word. He was unable to sleep because he was meditating on God’s Word. The Psalmist begs God to hear his voice and preserve his life because of His love for him. The enemy was closing in on him and he was fearful of them because they didn’t obey the laws of God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:145-152

145 KOPH. I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.

146 I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.

147 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

148 Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

149 Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment.

150 They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law.

151 Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth.

152 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

Things to Think About:

Do you ever wake up in the night or early morning with God’s Word on your mind?

Have you ever been fearful for your life and cried out to God to save you?

Have you ever noticed if you wake in the night and can’t sleep, that if you start praying, singing silently, or quoting Scripture, you will relax and fall back to sleep?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us to meditate on Your Word and to call out to You in prayer. Thank You for always being there when we call on You. Help us not to take Your love and concern for us for granted, but to treasure You and Your Word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “You are Righteous, O LORD” (Psalm 119:137-144)

You are Righteous, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 119:137-144. This portion of Scripture from Psalm 119 starts with TZADDI, which is the eighteenth letter in the Hebrew alphabet. It represents the number 90, with its final number being 900. It is also representative of a fishhook.

The Psalmist declares the LORD, His judgments, and testimonies are righteous and faithful. He is consumed by zeal, because his enemies have forgotten God’s Words. He loves the purity of the Word of God. He feels small because he is despised by his enemies, yet he remembers the precepts of the LORD.

He proclaims that the LORD’S righteousness is everlasting and His law is the truth. He has been over taken by trouble and anguish, but he delights in the commandments of the LORD. He reminds us that the righteousness of the LORD’S testimonies is eternal and asks the LORD to give him understanding that he may live.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 119:137-144

137 TZADDI. Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments.

138 Thy testimonies that thou hast commanded are righteous and very faithful.

139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words.

Things to Think About:

Do you consider the righteousness of the LORD?

Does it concern you that some people live in total disobedience to the Word of God?

Do you ask God to give you understanding so you can comprehend the Bible?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 119 where the Psalmist reminds us of Your righteousness. Help us to treasure the truth and righteousness of Your word. Give us knowledge and understanding that we might comprehend Your word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
