Hear My Prayer, O God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 55:1-23. Psalm 55 is a Psalm of David to the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, (a song or poem of contemplation). David calls out to God to listen to his prayer and not to hide from his pleas for favor.

David was restless and anxious because of his enemies who constantly taunted and threatened him. His heart hurt and he wished he could fly like a dove, far away in the desert to be at peace.

David asked God to destroy his enemies and divide their tongues because they had caused violence and strife in the city. He said they walked around the walls day and night doing mischievous things and causing sorrow in the city. Wickedness, deceit, and treachery never departed from her streets.

If the people threatening and slandering David had been his enemies, he could have borne the abuse, but his own friends challenged him, which caused him much grief and sorrow. Have you ever experienced having your friends turn their backs on you? Or find out they’re not really on your side? Have you even had people at church turn against you? David responded by calling on the LORD.

David did not have mercy on them when he asked God to let death overtake them quickly, and let them go straight to hell. David was tired of their wickedness.

David said as for him, he cried out to God morning, night, and at noon. He had confidence that the LORD heard his cries and would save him.

David declared that God had delivered his soul in peace from the battle that was against him. He knew that God heard his pleas, and would afflict those who came against him because they didn’t fear God.

“Cast your burden on the LORD, and He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.” David had confidence in God that he would take care of his enemies. He knew that God wouldn’t let these deceitful men continue to live like this. David trusted God completely to protect him from those who had turned their back on him.

I have had times like David, haven’t you? When I became a Christian author, I thought all my family, friends, and church family would support me completely. That was not necessarily true. I have had complete strangers send me ugly emails telling me to stop sharing God’s Word. I have had family members say cutting remarks about me being on the computer so much. I have had friends who stopped following me on social media. Some of the people I thought would support me the most have turned their backs on me.

Sometimes people are jealous when you succeed at doing something, or they may think or even say, “Who do they think they are.” I know I’m not perfect, but I strive to do what the LORD wants me to do. I’d love to have everybody’s support, but I know that’s not realistic. All I can do is do what I think the LORD wants me to and let Him deal with the rest. Don’t let anybody stop you from doing what you feel the Lord wants you to do.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 55:1-23

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
2 Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
4 My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
5 Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
7 Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
8 I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11 Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
12 For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15 Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me.
17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
19 God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
20 He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Things to think about:

Was David’s battle with his enemy in this Scripture or was it with someone who was supposed to be his friend? How do we know?
What did David want God to do with those who were opposing him?
Has anything like this ever happened to you? If so, when?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Psalms we see that David was distraught. He poured his heart out to You and begged for Your help. Help us to know that You are always there for us and when life is closing in we can call out to You. Help us to have faith that You will hear and answer our prayers. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “God is My Deliverer” (Psalm 54:1-7)

God is My Deliverer

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 54:1-7. Psalm 54 is a Psalm of David to the Chief Musician for stringed instruments. The Ziphims, who were the people of Ziph, went to Saul and told him that David was hiding among them.

David cries out, “Hear my prayer, O God.” Strangers had risen up against him and oppressors were seeking his soul. David declares that God is his helper. He has faith in God that He would take care of his enemies. David declares he will praise God for His deliverance. Have you ever been in a position like David in which you needed God to deliver you?

The story of David hiding from Saul in Ziph is recorded in 1 Samuel 26. Since this lesson is short, why not turn in your Bible and read the background story of this psalm? It will give you a better understanding of what David was going through. You will also see how God led David from place to place to protect him from his enemies.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 54:1-7

1 [[To the Chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us? Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2 Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5 He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.
7 For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Things to think about:

How many times has God delivered you from the enemy?
How did you give God praise and glory for His deliverance?
In what ways do you think of God as your helper?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 54. It reminds us that even when we are in trouble and the enemy has sought to destroy us, You are our deliverer. You are our helper. Help us to remember to praise You for Your protection over us as Your people. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “There is None That Does Good” (Psalm 53:1-6)

There is None That Does Good

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 53:1-6. Psalm 53 is a Psalm of David. David starts this psalm by saying, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.” David says that God looked down from heaven and saw all of the children of Israel had turned their backs on Him. How do you think it makes God feel when we turn our backs on Him?

The Bible tells us, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Because of Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden we are all born into a sinful world. We are born with a sinful nature.

Isaiah 64:6 reminds us, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” In spite of all we can do to be righteous, because of God’s holiness, our righteousness is as filthy rags.

None of us are excluded. Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Only through accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior, can our sins be covered by His blood. Then we can come boldly before the throne of God as one of His dear children.

Some of us don’t want to admit that we’re in need of a Savior. First John 1:10 tells us, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” So the best thing we can do is admit that we’re not perfect. Accept the fact that we all have sinned. We need to ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins, to please come into our hearts and we need to make Him the Lord of our lives. Only then can we have eternal life and be forgiven for all of our sinful ways.

God dealt with the enemies of Israel. The children of Israel were scattered abroad. One day God will gather His chosen people back to the Promised Land. He will come back to gather His people, both Jews and Gentiles, to be with Him forever. Are you ready for His call?

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 53:1-6

1 [[To the Chief Musician upon Mahalath, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David.]] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
3 Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.
5 There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.
6 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Things to think about:

How does our righteousness compare to God’s righteousness?
Since we are all sinners, what do we need to do to make things right with God?
Have you accepted Christ as your Savior? If so, when and where? If not, please consider doing so today.
How do you share with others their need for a Savior?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 53. Thank You for reminding us that none of us are righteous, we have all sinned. Help us to seek Your forgiveness of our sins by believing and accepting Your Son, Jesus Christ, as our Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “My God, My God” (Psalm 22:1-31)

My God, My God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 22:1-31. Psalm 22 is a Psalm of David, to the Chief Musician, upon Aijeleth Shahar. Aijeleth Shahar describes the melody to which the psalm was to be played.

This Psalm starts by saying, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus actually cried these words from the cross (see Matthew 27:46). He was forsaken by the Father for a purpose. Have you ever felt like God had forsaken you?

Psalm 22 has been referred to as, “the Psalm of the cross,” even though it was written by David about a thousand years before the death of Jesus on the cross. This Psalm describes what took place on the cross while Jesus was hanging on it. David even describes what Jesus was thinking and feeling. He also describes how the people acted around Jesus. Jesus suffered an extreme amount of pain as He took on our sins on the cross.

Deuteronomy 21:22-23 says, “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.”

God sent Jesus to be born on the earth for this purpose. He was miraculously placed in His mother’s womb so He could come to this world to die for the sins of the whole world. He was despised and rejected by the people around Him even though He came here to serve them.
Jesus took our sin upon Himself on the cross.

First Peter 2:24 tells us, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (see Romans 3:23). But Jesus died so we can have eternal life. Have you accepted His sacrifice for your sins?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 22:1-31

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David.]] My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28 For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the governor among the nations.
29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

Things to think about:

Why was Jesus forsaken by the Father while on the cross?
Why did Jesus go to the cross?
How much did Jesus have to trust the Father in order to put His life in His hands?
Have you put your life in God’s hands?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Even though this Psalm is hard to read about the suffering Jesus went through we thank You for the sacrifice that was made for our sins. Help us to realize the agony He felt and cause us to appreciate the gift we have been given. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD is Righteous” (Psalm 129:1-8)

The LORD is Righteous

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 129:1-8. Psalm 129 is another of the song of degrees, which was sung or chanted while on the way to Jerusalem. The people of Israel went to Jerusalem three times a year for Passover, Pentecost, and tabernacles. They would go as families. The Psalmist starts this Psalm saying that many times Israel has been afflicted, but the enemy wasn’t able to prevail against Israel.

Israel had other countries come against them, but God is faithful, He protected them against their enemies. The Psalmist acknowledges that the enemy plowed through Zion, but says those who hate Zion have been put to shame.

He declares that the enemies withered like the grass on the rooftop that withers before it grows up. Can you picture that in your mind? The enemies who come against Zion are struck down before they get started good. The children of Israel knew they had enemies, but they trusted God to watch over them and protect them from their enemies.

The Psalmist says neither do they say “The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.” There are those who may rise up against Israel and against Christians, but the LORD will prevail in the end. Israel is His promised land and He will guard it like a shepherd guards His sheep.

These songs of ascents are great motivation and encouragement songs. They were almost like the chants in the army to keep the soldiers marching in stride. They helped keep the people moving forward toward their destination.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 129:1-8

1 [[A Song of degrees.]] Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.
4 The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.
6 Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
7 Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.
8 Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.

Things to think about:

Why are some people enemies with Israel?
In what ways do you count the LORD as righteous and faithful to His children?
In what ways do you bless others in the name of the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 129 where the Psalmist reminds us of Your loyalty to Israel and to Your children. LORD, we pray for the peace of Israel. We pray for Your protective hand over them. Help us to treasure Your righteousness toward Your children. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
