Daily Bible Reading “Live Good, Do Good, Be Blessed” (Proverbs 3:27-35)

Proverbs 3LiveGoodDoGoodBeBlessedLive Good, Do Good, Be Blessed

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:27-35. In this Scripture, Solomon warns his son not to withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to do it. What does this mean?

What are some things that would be considered to be good that we could withhold from others? Do we ever willfully not do good things for others even though we are able to do them?

Would this include an employer/employee relationship? How about a husband/wife relationship? How about our children? How about our friends and extended family? How about our church family? How about strangers we meet on the street?

Has someone ever stopped you on the street and asked you for money and even though you had money you did not give it to them? Is this what the Scripture is talking about? Should we be generous enough to trust that people really do need money or they wouldn’t be asking us? Or, are we sometimes skeptical and afraid of what people might do so we refuse to help them? Maybe it is not our place to judge them. Maybe we should leave it up to God to determine if they are right or wrong.

The Scripture says, “Don’t say to your neighbor, Go, and come again, and tomorrow I will give; when you have it by you.” Does this mean if our neighbor came to borrow something from us and we had it available we should give it to them?

Has there ever been a time in your life when someone asked you to do something for them and you didn’t feel like being bothered? Maybe you had the power to do for them what they needed, but you were selfish. Maybe you didn’t want to get involved. If we look back on our lives and  think of these things were there times we weren’t always a good neighbor? How could we improve on doing good to others?

Being generous is a way for us to share the love of Christ with our neighbor or those we come in contact with every day.

We are warned not to devise evil against our neighbor. We are to see that he dwells safely by us. If everybody lived peacefully with their neighbor we would have a much better world to live in today.

In Luke 10:25-37 Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan who took compassion on his neighbor and took care of his needs, both physically and financially. He tells us to go and do likewise.

We are instructed not to quarrel with a person without cause if they have done us no harm. This is also meant not to sue a man without cause. In the world we live in today there are some people who are always looking to sue someone and get over on somebody. This is forbidden in this Scripture.

We are warned not envy violent men and not to choose any of their ways. The wicked person is an abomination to the LORD. But God’s guidance is with those who are righteous.

Solomon tells his son why he shouldn’t choose the ways of the wicked. He explains to him what the rewards are for living a righteous life and being in fellowship with the LORD.

The Scripture says that the curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but God blesses the house of those who are just.

He mocks the scorners: but gives grace to the lowly, those who are poor, humble and meek. People who are wise will inherit honor: but dishonor will come to those who are foolish.

Sometimes we may look at people who do wrong and think that they are getting along better than we are. This Scripture tells us not to choose any of the wicked person’s ways because their ways are contrary to the ways of the LORD. In time they will get their just reward. The LORD communes with those who are righteous and blesses them.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:27-35

27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

Things to think about:

  • What are some things we can do for others that would be considered good?
  • Who is our neighbor?
  • How are we to treat our neighbor?
  • What is the fate of wicked people?
  • What are the rewards of righteous people?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we study this Scripture in the book of Proverbs, no doubt many of us are convicted about the ways we have interacted with others. Help us to treat others in the ways You would have us to. Help us to be good neighbors and to always do good to those who it is due when we have the power to do it. Help us not to be selfish. Help us not to be unconcerned about other people. Help us not to judge others. Help us to show Your love to others by our good deeds. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Will Be Your Confidence” (Proverbs 3:19-26)

The LORD Will Be Your Confidence

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:19-26. In this Scripture, Solomon reassures his son saying, “The LORD by wisdom, created the earth; by understanding, he made the heavens. By his knowledge, the oceans were divided, and the dew trickles from the clouds.”

Solomon encourages his son to not let them depart from his eyes and keep sound wisdom and discretion. He tells his son they will be life to your soul, and favor to your neck. Then you will walk safely on your journey, and your feet will not stumble.

When you lie down, you won’t be afraid and your sleep will be pleasant. Do not be afraid of sudden terror, or of the devastation of the wicked, when it comes.

The LORD will be your confidence and will protect you and keep you from being captured.

In this Scripture, we are reminded of God’s great wisdom and His ability to create the earth and to keep it in place for all these years. We are encouraged to keep wisdom and discretion in the front of our minds. We are also reminded that God is our protector from the enemy and we can put our confidence and hope in Him.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:19-26

19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Things to think about:

  • How does Solomon remind his son of the LORD’S great power?
  • How can we lay down to sleep at night in peace?
  • In whom can we find confidence and hope?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we are reminded of Your awesome power. We are reminded that You watch over us and protect us from the enemy. Help us to rest in You, knowing that you are by our side keeping watch over us day and night. Help us to remember that no matter what is going on in the world in You we can have confidence and hope. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Happy Are Those Who Find Wisdom” (Proverbs 3:13-18)

Happy Are Those Who Find Wisdom

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:13-18. Solomon tells his son; happy is the man who finds wisdom and the man that gets understanding. Even though Solomon is talking to his son, the instructions that he gives in the book of Proverbs can apply to all of us, not only to men.

Wisdom is more profitable than silver and the gain of it more than fine gold.

Wisdom is more precious than fine jewels. All the things you desire can not be compared to the value of true wisdom.

A long life is in her right hand. In her left hand are wealth and honor.
Her ways are pleasant, and her paths lead to peace.

Wisdom is like a tree of life to those who obtain it. Happy are those who retain wisdom.

Notice in these Scriptures that Solomon speaks of wisdom as a lady. Like women are instructed in the Bible to submit to their husbands. We are instructed to submit our ways to the ways of the LORD. In doing so we will find wisdom.

Be careful where you seek counsel. When we take counsel from ungodly people we can end up in a lot of trouble. Making bad decisions can lead to death and destruction.

When we seek wisdom from the LORD and from those who walk in His ways, we can find joy, peace, and abundance in this life and in the life to come.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:13-18

13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Things to think about:

  • What are some of the benefits of finding wisdom that Solomon speaks of in this Scripture?
  • What are we promised when we seek wisdom?
  • Where should we seek wisdom?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that Solomon tells his son that those who find wisdom are happy and blessed. Help us as we study the book of Proverbs to realize the importance of seeking Your wisdom in our lives. Help us to seek Your wisdom in our daily lives. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Do Not Be Wise in Your Own Eyes” (Proverbs 3:7-12)

Do Not Be Wise in Your Own Eyes

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:7-12. Solomon warns his son not to be wise in his own eyes. So many times we think we know what is best for us, when in actuality we may not. He instructs his son to fear (stand in awe of, show reverence for) the LORD, and depart from evil. By doing this it will cause healing to his nerves, and refreshment to his bones.

So many times we toy around with evil and then don’t understand why it manifests in our lives. Solomon encourages his son to stay away from evil. This is good advice for all of us.

Solomon encourages his son to honor the LORD with his wealth, and with the first part of all his revenues. He tells him that by doing so his barns will be full, and his wine-presses will be overflowing with fresh wine.

When we honor the LORD with the first portion of our income, we have God’s blessings on our lives and on the rest of our possessions.

Solomon warns his son not to reject the discipline of the LORD and not to grow tired of his correction. He reminds him that the LORD corrects those he loves just as a father disciplines his children because he loves them and wants the best for them.

If you are a parent, think about how it has made you feel when you had to discipline your children. Surely it burdens the LORD when we are disobedient and He is forced to correct us and get us back on the right track.

If you have accepted Jesus as your savior, then God is your Heavenly Father and He wants the best for you, as He does all of His children. He wants to bless you. He wants to have a close, personal, intimate relationship with you. He is there for you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. He wants to spend time with you. He loves you.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:7-12

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Things to think about:

  • What does Solomon mean when he says to fear the LORD?
  • What are the benefits of fearing the LORD?
  • What does it mean to give a first fruits offering?
  • What are the benefits of giving a first fruit offering to the LORD?
  • How are we to respond to the LORD’S chastening?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in the book of Proverbs we see Solomon instructed his son to not be wise in his own eyes. Help us to follow Solomon’s advice. Help us to stay away from evil. Help us to honor You. Show us the benefits of first fruit offerings. Forgive us and help us to adhere to Your correction. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

**Please remember me in prayer. I will be having surgery today on my right hand and I am right-handed. Please pray for the doctor that God will lead, guide and direct his hand as he works on mine. Please pray for complete healing. Thank you! I love you with the love of the Lord. Blessings!

Daily Bible Reading “Trust in the LORD” (Proverbs 3:1-6)

Trust in the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Proverbs 3:1-6. In this Scripture, Solomon says, “My son, don’t forget my law (instructions); but let your heart keep my commandments (code of wisdom).” They will add long life and peace to you.

Solomon tells his son not to forsake mercy (goodness, faithfulness or kindness) and truth. He instructs him to tie them around his neck and inscribe them on his heart.

He tells him by doing this he will find favor (grace or acceptance) and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

He reminds his son to trust (confide or have confidence) in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding (discernment). In all your ways acknowledge (know or consider) him, and he will direct your paths.

When we trust in our own understanding instead of trusting God to lead us on the road of life, we may end up on a dead end street. When we trust God and add His wisdom and knowledge to our lives He guides us to the path of eternal life.

When we trust in our own wisdom, we may have limited knowledge about certain things or circumstances. If we trust in the wisdom of other people, their wisdom is limited as well. They may lead us down the wrong path.

We are much better off to trust God and His leadership, guidance and direction in our lives. His knowledge is greater than all of our knowledge put together. He knows the past, present, and future. He knows all the details. His knowledge is not limited like ours is.

Trusting God is not a onetime thing, it is a continual process of trusting Him more and more with our lives and the decisions in our lives. We learn to depend on Him. We learn to pray to Him and ask for His guidance in our circumstances. As we develop an ongoing relationship with God we learn to trust Him more and more each day.

Daily Bible Reading:

Proverbs 3:1-6

1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Things to think about:

  •  What does Solomon encourage his son to do?
  • What benefits does Solomon say he will receive if he follow these instructions?
  • What does Solomon tell his son to do concerning the LORD? Why?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this Scripture in Proverbs we see that Solomon instructed his son in Your ways. He encouraged him to trust You and not to lean on his own understanding. Help us to do the same, to trust You and not depend on our own wisdom or the wisdom of other people to guide our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

**Please say a prayer for me this week. I will be having surgery on my right hand to remove a ganglian cyst on Tuesday. I am right-handed so I am hoping and praying everything goes well and I don’t have any problems. Please also remember the doctor that God will lead, guide and direct his hand as he works on my hand. If all goes well I should be able to continue doing the work I do. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. I love you with the love of the Lord. Blessings, Deborah
