Daily Bible Reading “Praise the LORD, O My Soul” (Psalm 146:1-10)

Praise the LORD, O My Soul

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 146:1-10. Psalm 146 is a Psalm of Praise which begins by praising the LORD. The Psalmist declares that he will praise the LORD and sing praises to Him as long as he lives. He encourages us to put our trust in the LORD and not in man.

The Psalmist proclaims that those who put their hope in the LORD will be happy. He is speaking of the LORD God of Jacob, who created heaven and earth, and everything in the earth. The LORD who judges the oppressed, gives food to the hungry and sets the captives free.

He opens the eyes of the blind, raises those who are bowed down, and loves the righteous. The LORD preserves strangers, relieves the fatherless and widows, and turns the way of the wicked upside down. The LORD God of Zion will reign forever, through all generations. Praise the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 146:1-10

1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.
3 Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
5 Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:
6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:
7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:
8 The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:
9 The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.
10 The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.

Things to think about:

  • Do you enjoy praising the LORD?
  • What are some ways we can praise the LORD?
  • What are the things in this chapter for which the Psalmist says we can praise the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 146 where the Psalmist praises You. He lists all kinds of things for which we can praise You. Help us to constantly look for things and ways to praise Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “All Thy Works Shall Praise Thee” (Psalm 145:10-21)

All Thy Works Shall Praise Thee

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 145:10-21. David declares that the works of the LORD will praise Him and the saints will bless Him. They will speak of God’s power and the glory of His kingdom. They will make known His mighty acts and the glorious majesty of His kingdom.

His kingdom is everlasting and His dominion will endure through all generations. The LORD holds up those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. The eyes of all wait on You and You give them their meat in due time. You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. You are our provider.

The LORD is near to all those who call on His holy name in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him, He hears their cry, and saves them. The LORD preserves those who love Him, but He will destroy all the wicked. David declares that he will praise the name of the LORD, and all flesh will bless His holy name forever.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 145:10-21

10 All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.
11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;
12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.
13 Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.
14 The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.
16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
18 The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
20 The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.
21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

  • What are some of the things David uses in this Scripture to describe the LORD?
  • Why should every living thing praise the LORD?
  • Make a list of five things for which we can praise the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading “I Will Extol Thee, My God” (Psalm 145:1-9)

I Will Extol Thee, My God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 145:1-9. Psalm 145 is a Psalm of praise by David, where he says that he will exalt God as his king every day and he will bless God’s name forever. David declares, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised.” God’s greatness is immeasurable.

David says that each generation will praise God’s name to the next and tell of His mighty works. David professes that he will talk about God’s glorious honor and majesty, declaring His greatness.

David proclaims that they will all sing of God’s righteousness and His goodness forever. Verse 8 is one of my favorite verses in this Scripture. It says, “The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.” David declares that the LORD is good and His tender mercy is over all His works. Are these characteristics of God that we should inherit?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 145:1-9

1 [David’s [Psalm of praise.]] I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.
2 Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.
5 I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.
6 And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.
7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

Things to think about:

  • How can we exalt God as our king?
  • What are some things for which we can bless God?
  • How can we pass the story of God and Jesus to the next generation?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 145 where David exalts You. He praises and blesses Your name. He promises to spread Your name to the next generation. Help us to do as David did by worshiping, praising, and sharing You with others. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Blessed Be the LORD My Strength” (Psalm 144:1-15)

Blessed Be the LORD My Strength

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 144:1-15. Psalm 144 is a Psalm of David that praises the LORD, who is his strength, his fortress, his shield, and his deliverer. David begs God to deliver him from the hand of his enemy and to war against the enemy for him. David declares that he will sing praises to the LORD for his deliverance.

One of my favorite Scriptures in this chapter in verse 3, which says, “LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!” Have you ever wondered this yourself? Why would the God of heaven and earth be concerned for us? He was so concerned for us that He would give His only Son to die on a cruel cross for our sins.

David calls on the LORD to show His strength by smiting the mountains and causing them to smoke. He asks God to shoot down lightning from the heavens to scatter the enemy and destroy them, so his sons and daughters might flourish, and his livestock would multiply and be strong. Then, they could all be happy and rejoice in the LORD.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 144:1-15

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever wondered why God would care for man?
  • How does it make you feel to know how much He cares for you?
  • In what ways do you trust God as your deliverer?
  • How do you praise and worship God?
  • The Scripture says, “Happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” In what ways do you find happiness in the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture from Psalm 144. We see David loved You and counted on You to be his deliverer. Help us to know that You are on our side and that when times are tough we can call on You to be our deliverer. Help us to sing praises to Your holy name. Help us to be happy and find joy in serving You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Hear My Prayer, O LORD” (Psalm 143:1-12)

Hear My Prayer, O LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 143:1-12. The Book of Psalms is a book of prayers. Psalm 143 is a Psalm of David where he pours out his heart to God asking God to hear his prayer and supplications. David asks God not to judge him because in His sight no man could be justified. God knew that no man was able to keep the law that is why He sent his Son, Jesus, into the world to save us from our sins.

Let’s take a look at Acts 13:38-39, which says, “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.” We can be justified (just as if I never sinned) to God by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

David pours out his heart to God telling Him how the enemy has persecuted him and has brought him down. But, David knows where to go for strength. He meditates on God’s works and his soul thirsts for God.

David longs to feel the loving presence of God. He trusts God and wants to know what God wants him to do. David begs God to deliver him from his enemies and to teach him to do God’s will. He wants God to teach him to live righteously and he reminds God that he is His servant.

Romans 10:4 says, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” When Christ died on the cross there was no more need for the law. He became the sacrifice for our sins. We have to believe and receive Him into our lives to have forgiveness of our sins. Have you accepted Christ as your Savior?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 143:1-12

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.
4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.
5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.
6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
7 Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.
9 Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.
10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.
11 Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.
12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant.

Things to think about:

  • Have you ever felt as David describes in this Scripture? If so, describe your feelings and what brought them to life?
  • Do you ever feel hungry and thirsty for God? If so, describe that feeling.
  • How often do you pour out your heart to God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture where we see how David prayed and poured out his heart to You. Help us to trust You and know that You have our best interest at heart. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who became the justification for our sins. LORD, we pray for those who have not yet accepted Him as their Savior that they would do so today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
