Daily Bible Reading “The LORD Loves Zion” (Psalm 87:1-7)

The LORD Loves Zion

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 87:1-7. Psalm 87 is a Psalm for the sons of Korah. God created the whole world; He could have picked any place He wanted as His chosen city. He chose Jerusalem. The Scripture tells us that the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are said about the city. When Jesus comes back He will set up His throne there and He will rule the earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The Bible says in Zechariah 2:10-12, “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.”

David said that people would be proud to say they were born in Jerusalem. The LORD will establish her. He said when the LORD writes down the people He will note those who were born in Zion. There will be a great celebration in Jerusalem when Jesus comes back. The singers and instrument players will be there praising and worshiping Him. Are you looking forward to His return?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 87:1-7

1 [A Psalm [or Song for the sons of Korah.]] His foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah.
4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there.
5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her.
6 The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah.
7 As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

Things to think about:

Why did God choose Zion as His dwelling place?
What is the significance of those who were born in Zion?
Have you ever been to Jerusalem?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 87. David tells us about Your love for Zion and how You established it as Your city. You could have chosen any place on the earth You wanted, but You chose Jerusalem as Your dwelling place. Help us to realize the importance of Zion to You. Help us look forward to the return of Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms is one of Deborah’s favorite books of the Bible. It is a great book to read if you’re ever feeling down or need to renew your relationship with Christ. King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

The Book of Psalms: Part 3 Chapters 61-90 contains fifty Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.

Daily Bible Reading “O LORD, Hear Me” (Psalm 86:1-17)

O LORD, Hear Me

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 86:1-17. Psalm 86 is a Prayer of David. David cried out to the LORD to hear his prayer. He admitted that he is poor and needy and asked God to preserve his soul. David declared that he is a servant of God and trusts in Him. David asked God to be merciful to him. He said he cries out to God daily. Do you pray to God daily?

David declared that God is good, ready to forgive, and ready to show mercy to all those who call on Him. God loves us. He is willing and ready to forgive us. He wants us to come to Him in prayer with our cares and concerns. David knew God would hear and answer his prayers. He knew he could call out to God when he was in trouble. David completely trusted in God.

David gave glory to God saying, “There are no other gods like You and no other works greater than Yours. All nations will bow down and worship God and glorify Your name.” David requested that God teach him His ways. David promised to walk in God’s truth and praise His name forever. David asked God to unite his heart with His.

David knew his enemy was trying to destroy him, but He trusted God to protect him. He praised God for his compassion, long-suffering, graciousness, truth, comfort, and mercy.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 86:1-17

1 [[A Prayer of David.]] Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
6 Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.
8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
14 O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.
15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
16 O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.
17 Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

Things to think about:

Do you thank God for all His attributes, like David did? For what attributes do you thank Him?
How often do you pray to God?
Do you cry out to God when you need help? What are some times in your life when you especially needed God’s help?
What are some other things we can talk to God about when we pray, other than asking Him for help?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the Scripture in Psalm 86. David reminds us of Your mercy, truth, compassion, comfort, graciousness, and long-suffering. LORD we thank You for all the blessings You bestow on us. You are a loving and kind God. Help us to spend time praying to You daily, as David did. Help us not to only cry out when we are in trouble, but to acknowledge who You are and all You do for us, when we pray. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Revive Us Again” (Psalm 85:1-13)

Revive Us Again

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 85:1-13. Psalm 85 is written to the Chief Musician. It is a Psalm for the sons of Korah. The Psalmist starts by thanking the LORD for showing favor to His land and bringing back the captivity of Jacob. He acknowledges that God had forgiven the sins of His people.

He is thankful that God has taken away His rage against them and turned away from His burning anger. He begs God to turn the people back to Him and cause His anger to cease toward them.

He asks God, “Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger against all generations? Will you not revive us: so your people may rejoice in you again?”
He begs God to show His mercy toward the people and grant His salvation to them. He says he will listen to what the LORD says. He has confidence that the LORD will speak peace to His people, and His saints. But don’t let them turn again to their foolish ways.

The Psalmist states, “Surely the salvation of the LORD is near to those who fear Him; so glory may abide in our land.”

Verse10 is one of my favorite Scriptures in this chapter, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”

The Psalmist was confident that truth would spring out of the earth; and righteousness would look down from heaven. He felt sure that the LORD would give them that which was good; and their land would yield its increase.
The Psalmist declares that righteousness would go before the LORD; and would put them in the path of His steps.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 85:1-13

1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.
8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

Things to think about:

Have you ever felt like God was angry with you? If so, when?
In what ways have you sinned against God?
How can we find forgiveness and restoration when we rebel against God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 85. Help us to see that You are a forgiving God. Help us to realize that You love us. Help us to also know that it grieves You when we sin against You. Forgive us of all our sins and help us to always live in a way that is pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Better is One Day in Your House” (Psalm 84:1-12)

Better is One Day in Your House

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 84:1-12. Psalm 84 is to the chief Musician, upon Gitteth, which is a musical instrument either used by the people of Gath or used in vintage songs for the wine-dressers and press-traders. This is one of the songs used for the Feast of Booths, which took place in the fall of the year to celebrate the harvest. It is a Psalm for the sons of Korah.

How beloved is Your tabernacle. Their hearts cried out for God. Do you long for God? Do you love going to church and worshiping with fellow believers? Do you find your church to be friendly, welcoming, and loving? The sons of Korah worked at the tabernacle as doorkeepers. They were the ones who welcomed people as they arrived at the tabernacle. They loved being in the tabernacle of the LORD. It was their joy.

Hebrews 10:25 reminds us how important it is for us, as Christians, to worship together and encourage one another, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

The Psalmist reminds us the birds have their houses and nests. He says the ones who dwell in the house of the Lord and find their strength in Him are blessed. I love verse 10, which says, “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”

They would rather have been in the house of the LORD, performing their duties, which were lower than many of the other duties that were ascribed to the priestly tribe, than anywhere else they could be. They did their duties out of love and service to the people and the LORD.

He reminds us why we should enjoy being in the LORD’S presence so much in verses 11 and 12, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.” Have you put your trust in the LORD?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 84:1-12

1 [[To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.]] How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.
3 Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O LORD of hosts, my King, and my God.
4 Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.
5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.
6 Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.
7 They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.
8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah.
9 Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.
10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

Things to think about:

What do you like most about spending time in the house of the LORD?
If you do not attend church, why not?
What are some other ways we can fellowship with fellow believers besides at church?
What is your favorite place to spend time with God?
In what ways do you show you completely trust in God?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 84. The Psalmist reminds us how important it is for us as believers to spend time together worshiping You. We thank You that You are our sun and shield and give grace and glory to us. Thank You for reminding us that You will not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly. Help us to put our complete trust in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “A Prayer for Israel” (Psalm 83:1-18)

A Prayer for Israel

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 83:1-18. Psalm 83 is a Psalm of Asaph, a prayer for Israel. Asaph cried out for God not to remain silent, not to hold His peace and not to be still because His enemies had lifted up their heads against His children.

Their enemies were trying to cut Israel off from being a nation. Some of the turmoil that was going on back in Asaph’s day is still going on today. Look at the news of today about Israel and how their enemies are still trying to come against them.

Asaph listed all the different people who were coming against Israel. He called out for God to move against these people who were enemies of God, and were coming against God’s chosen people. He cried out to God to let them be troubled forever so they would know that He is God of the whole earth.

When I read the last verse of this chapter, it gives me chills. Isn’t this what it is all about, “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth”?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 83:1-18

1 [A Song [or Psalm of Asaph.]] Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
2 For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.
3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.
4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee:
6 The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
8 Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

16 Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD.
17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Things to think about:

How does it make you feel to know that some of the same problems that happen today were happening back in biblical times?
Do you ever pay attention to the news media about the turmoil in Israel today? What are some things you have noticed lately?
How can we help people to know that God is the God of the whole earth?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in Psalm 83. Help us as we read this Scripture to realize there have always been enemies of God, who tried to destroy Your people. Help us not to be afraid. Help us to do everything we can as believers to lift Your name up in this world so all people may know that You are God. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
