Magnify the LORD

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 34:1-22. Psalm 34 is a Psalm of David. David had been hiding in caves because Saul was seeking to destroy him. In 1 Samuel 21:10-15, David pretended to be a crazy man. The first verse talks about David changing his behavior. Have you ever noticed that sometimes we change our behavior around certain people?

David says that he will bless the LORD at all times, no matter his circumstances. We all know it is a lot easier to praise God when all is going well and a lot harder when times are difficult. David exhorts us to magnify and exalt the LORD. David learned that God would take care of Him through all circumstances of life.

David tells us when he sought the LORD; the LORD heard and delivered him from his fears. Is there something you are afraid of? Have you asked God to deliver you from your fears? David talks about the angel of the LORD encamping around those that fear Him and delivering them. Do you fear the LORD? What does it mean to fear the LORD? This is a way of saying we need to respect or revere the LORD; not be afraid of Him. We should be more concerned about pleasing the LORD than worrying about what He might to do punish us if we didn’t obey Him.

David reminds us to keep our tongues from evil. This is something we all need to be careful about. Sometimes it is difficult to keep our mouths under control. We can’t always say what we think. Sometimes it is better to keep it to ourselves. Like I tell my granddaughters, if you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all. This is a lesson we all need to learn, including myself.

David invites us to taste and see that the LORD is good. “Blessed are those that trust in the LORD.” The LORD hears the cry of His children. He heals their broken hearts. He protects them from their enemies. The LORD redeems the soul of His servants; none of them will be deserted.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 34:1-22

1 [[[A Psalm] of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.]] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

Things to think about:

How can we determine in our hearts to bless the LORD in spite of our circumstances?
How do you magnify the LORD?
How can we keep our tongues from speaking evil?
In what ways can we show gratitude to God for His provision and protection of us?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Psalm of David. We thank You that David realized the treasure He had in You and taught us to see it. Help us to realize how much You love us and protect us. Help us to enjoy spending time with You and praising You for all You are and all You do for us. Thank you, LORD. We love You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

Daily Bible Reading “Who Will Dwell in Your Holy Hill” (Psalm 15:1-5)

Who Will Dwell in Your Holy Hill

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 15:1-5. Psalm 15 is a Psalm of David. David asks the LORD who will abide in His tabernacle. Who will dwell in the holy hill of Zion?

The answer is:

Those who walk upright and whose works are righteous
Those who tell the truth
Those who don’t gossip about others
Those who do good to their neighbors
Those who despise evil
Those who stand by their commitments
Those who don’t take bribes
Those who can’t be bought

He honors those who fear the LORD. He or she is a person of honor and lives in obedience to God’s will and God’s Word.

James 2:18 tells us, “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” Yes, salvation is a free gift of God, but those who are saved; their actions should show their right standing with God.

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 15:1-5

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.
4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

What was David’s question to the LORD in this Scripture?
What was the LORD’S response to David’s question?
What can we learn from this Scripture?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Help us to live in a way that brings honor and glory to You. Help us to speak the truth. Help us to live peaceably with our neighbors. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Kiss the Son” (Psalm 2:1-12)

Kiss the Son

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 2:1-12. The Psalmist tells us to “Kiss the Son.” But first he asks the question, “Why do the heathen rage.” This is considered to be a Messianic Psalm, which means it talks about Jesus. Acts 4:25 gives us a clue that David is the writer of this Psalm, Acts 4:25, “Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?” It asks the same question that is asked in Psalm 2:1.

The Psalmist says the kings and rulers of this world come together to take issue against God and His Son, Jesus. God laughs in the heavens at their foolishness. He warns them with His wrath. Some people don’t get the message.

There are many Scriptures in the Bible that refer to this Psalm. One of them is Acts 13:33, “God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.” It even mentions the second psalm in the Scripture.

Psalm 2:10-12, the Holy Spirit exhorts the kings and rulers of this world to serve the LORD with fear and trembling. He speaks saying, “Kiss the Son.” He admonishes them to accept Jesus as their Savior and worship Him lest they cause Him to be angered against them and they perish. We are reminded those who trust in the LORD are blessed.

What would the world be like today if the leaders of this world served the LORD?

Daily Bible Reading:

Psalm 2:1-12

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

What will happen to those who put their trust in the LORD?

Have you put your trust in the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Scripture in the book of Psalms. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus, who You sacrificed for our sins. Help us to love and worship Him. Help the rulers of this world to serve You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Good Shepherd Divides His Sheep

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:31-46. In this Scripture, Jesus is talking to the disciples and tells them that when the Son of Man comes, and the angels with Him, He’ll sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be before Him and He’ll divide them as a shepherd divides His sheep from the goats. He’ll put the sheep on His right hand and the goats on His left hand. Are you a sheep or a goat?

To the sheep, who are on His right hand, He’ll say: “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was hungry, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

The righteous ones asked when they saw Him, and did all those things, and He told them: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

He said to the ones on the left side, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was hungry, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.”

They asked Him when they saw him and didn’t do these things. He told them, “Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Therefore, you will go into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

This is a harsh reality, but, we need to realize one day this is truly going to happen. Are you prepared? Do you know if you will be on the right hand or the left? Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? If not, I pray you will do so before it is too late.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:31-46

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Things to think about:

Are you prepared to meet the Master?
What does Jesus say to the sheep?
What does Jesus say to the goats?
Do you have compassion for others who are in need?
Ask God to help you to see the need of others and to respond to their needs.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help us as we read this Scripture, to know in our hearts whether we are the sheep or the goats. We want to spend eternity with You in heaven. I pray for the ones who haven’t accepted You yet, that You would draw them to Yourself before it is eternally too late. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Parable of the Talents” (Matthew 25:14-30)

Parable of the Talents

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Matthew 25:14-30. In this Scripture, Jesus is telling the disciples another parable about the kingdom of heaven. He says it is like a man who was traveling to a far country.

The man called his servants and gave them his goods to keep until he returned. He gave each one of them according to their ability. One he gave five talents, one two, and one he gave one talent. What do you think the servants did with their talents while the man was gone?

A talent was made of silver and each one weighed fifty to eighty pounds. When the man returned he found the man who had five talents doubled his, the one who had two talents doubled his, but, the one who had only one talent buried his talent in the ground. Why do you think he buried it in the ground?

He said he was afraid, so instead of taking what his lord gave him and trying to make more with it, he hid it in the ground. Isn’t it funny how we let fear cripple us?

The man was happy with the ones who doubled their talents and told them he would give them more. But the one who buried his displeased the lord.

So, the Lord told his servants to take his talent from him and give it to the one who had ten talents. Then he wanted them to cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness.

Remember, this is a parable about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus went away and He is coming back someday. He left each one of His servants with talents and we’ll all be accountable to Him for how we use those talents. Everything we have He provided and every gift we have He gave us. So, we need to make sure we are using our money, our time, and our talents in a way that will honor Him when He returns.

Daily Bible Reading:

Matthew 25:14-30

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Things to think about:

Which of the men were most responsible with their talents?
Which of the men were least responsible with their talents?
What did the man do with the one who was least responsible?
How are you using the talents God has given you for Him?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we read this parable of the talents, help us examine ourselves and see how we are using what You have given to us. Help us to use what you have provided for us wisely, so at Jesus’ return, He’ll be pleased with us. Help us to not be hearers of the Word only, but doers of the Word, as well. In Jesus’ name, we pray. We love You, LORD, Amen.
