Blessed Be the LORD My Strength

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Psalm 144:1-15. Psalm 144 is a Psalm of David that praises the LORD, who is his strength, his fortress, his shield, and his deliverer. David begs God to deliver him from the hand of his enemy and to war against the enemy for him. David declares that he will sing praises to the LORD for his deliverance.

One of my favorite Scriptures in this chapter in verse 3, which says, “LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!” Have you ever wondered this yourself? Why would the God of heaven and earth be concerned for us? He was so concerned for us that He would give His only Son to die on a cruel cross for our sins.

David calls on the LORD to show His strength by smiting the mountains and causing them to smoke. He asks God to shoot down lightning from the heavens to scatter the enemy and destroy them, so his sons and daughters might flourish, and his livestock would multiply and be strong. Then, they could all be happy and rejoice in the LORD.

Psalm 144:1-15

1 [[A Psalm of David.]] Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.
7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Things to think about:

• Have you ever wondered why God would care for man?
• How does it make you feel to know how much He cares for you?
• In what ways do you trust God as your deliverer?
• How do you praise and worship God?
• The Scripture says, “Happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.” In what ways do you find happiness in the LORD?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for this Scripture from Psalm 144. We see David loved You and counted on You to be his deliverer. Help us to know that You are on our side and that when times are tough we can call on You to be our deliverer. Help us to sing praises to Your holy name. Help us to be happy and find joy in serving You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

King David went through a lot of tough times in his lifetime, but he loved God and trusted God to protect him from his enemies.

The book of Psalms was written by various people. About half of it was attributed to King David, whether they were written by David or for David is questioned by some biblical scholars. Some of the Psalms were written by Asaph and some say they were written for the sons of Korah and even Moses and Solomon were writers of the Psalms. The Psalms consists of poetry that was primarily meant to be used as songs of praise to the Lord.

This part of the book of Psalms contains fifteen of the Songs of degrees. They were the songs or chants that the people of Israel sang as they journeyed to Jerusalem. It also contains some of the Psalms of David.

The Book of Psalms: Part 5 Chapters 120-150 contains thirty-eight Daily Bible Reading Lessons. Each lesson contains a brief commentary by the author, the Daily Bible Reading Scriptures, a few questions for contemplation or discussion, and a prayer of the day. It is a great Bible study for individuals or group studies.
