Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for the People in Your Life” (Romans 16:1-5)

Give Thanks to God for the People in your Life

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from Romans 16:1-5. Paul wrote this letter, to the Romans from Corinth and sent it by Phebe, who was a servant of the church at Cenchrea. What does Paul mean by saying that Phebe was a servant of the church?

Paul is sending a recommendation for Phebe. Sometimes in life, we need other people to intervene for us. We may need them to intercede with God and pray for us or to recommend us to other people. Paul knew Phebe and he knew about her dedication to Christ and the church.

Paul requests they accept her and support her in whatever she needs. In this Scripture, Paul gave thanks for Priscilla and Aquila, who he called his helpers in Christ Jesus. He says they stuck out their necks for him.

Throughout the next ten verses of the chapter, Paul goes through a whole list of people for whom he was thankful. Get out your Bible and look at it.

Many times in life we wouldn’t be where we are had it not been for the people God placed in our lives to help us along the way. Sometimes God gives you a job to do that is so big, you not only need His help, but the help of others to get it done. We need to remember to give God thanks always for the people He places in our lives.

The people God has placed in my life have really blessed me. He has placed so many people in my life who are willing to take their time and resources to help me.

It has been such a blessing for me to see how He has taken the relationships that I have made over the past few years with Christian friends on the Internet and used them to support me. I am humbled and grateful for each one of them and for each one of you.

When is the last time you stopped and took the time to think about the people God has placed in your life and gave Him glory and praise for them? Think about it: your mother, father, sisters, brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, wife or husband, children, grandchildren, friends, fellow church members, business acquaintances, the servers in restaurants, the people who work in the stores you frequent, and many more.

The list goes on and on and sometimes, we take it all for granted. What if that person was no longer in your life? Wouldn’t there be a void?

Instead of taking everybody for granted and thinking they’ll always be there for us we need to take time to stop and thank the Lord for them and let them know how much we love and appreciate them. Don’t wait — tomorrow may be too late. Let them know today and let God know how much you appreciate all the people He has placed in your life.

Having an attitude of gratitude towards the people in your life not only shows them you care, it makes them want to be there for you. It’ll make you a happier person if you are thankful and appreciative of the people in your life.

People will enjoy being around you and will want to please you because you make them feel appreciated. Spending time thanking God for the people in your life will make Him know you are grateful as well.

Daily Bible Reading:

Romans 16:1-5

1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:

2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.

3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus:

4 Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

5 Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ.

Things to think about:

  • In what ways do you give God thanks for the people in your life?
  • What are some things we can do to help us not take people for granted?
  • Make a list of all the people God has placed in your life whom you are thankful for and keep adding to the list as God places more people in your life.
  • Tell at least one person each day how much you love and appreciate him or her.

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for all the people You placed in our lives. We thank You for our families, our friends, our church families, and our acquaintances. So many times we take them all for granted, forgive us and help us to love and appreciate them and to give thanks to You for them. You bless and enrich our lives by the people You place in our lives. We want to take time today to say thank You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God” (Colossians 3:1-17)

Give Thanks to God

And whatsoever ye DO in WORD or DEED, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, GIVING THANKS to God and the Father by him. – Colossians 3:17

Paul tells the people if they are in Christ they should seek those things which are above, not the things on the earth. He says to put off the sins of the old sinful man and put on the image of the new man, which is created after the image of Christ. The Bible tells us when we get saved that we become new creatures in Christ. God helps us to do away with our old sinful nature and take up characteristics that are Christ-like. In this Scripture, Paul uses the male gender, but this applies to all those who accept Christ as their Savior, both male, and female.

Paul says as Christians we are all one in Christ; there are no differences between us because of our background or race. Paul goes on to tell what the new man should look like in Christ. These are the characteristics that Paul says should be indicative of the new man, he should be holy, merciful, and kind. He should show the traits of humbleness, meekness, and long-suffering. He should be forgiving, show love through charity, and let the peace of God rule in his heart. Paul says, “Be ye thankful.”

In verses 16 and 17 he tells us how to do that, by studying the word of God, teaching, admonishing one another, and singing psalms and hymns. He reminds us that whatever we do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God, the Father by Him.

As Christians, we should get in the habit of studying God’s Word and encouraging one another. God loves it when we sing songs of praise and worship to Him and give thanks to Him for who He is and all He has done for us.

Daily Bible Reading:

Colossians 3:1-17

1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Things to think about:

  • In what ways can seek the things which are above?
  • Have you put off the old sinful man?
  • Are you in the habit of giving thanks to the LORD?

Prayer of the Day
:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins. Help us to set our sights on things above and not on things on the earth. Help us to be forgiving of one another. Help us to put on the fruits of the spirit. We love You and praise You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “I Give Thanks To God” (Psalm 139:14)

I Give Thanks To God

Today’s Daily Bible Reading was written by my friend, Lily Brenner.

I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are Thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

-Psalm 139:14

In God‘s wisdom, He chose for me to be born into this century and not another. Born to the man and woman He chose for my parents and blessing me with four brothers and four sisters. He watched over me when I was a small child even though I didn’t know of His existence. He sent His angels to guard me against dangers I could not see.

For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

-Psalm 91:11-12

I give thanks to God for His love when He saved my soul as a young twelve-year-old girl. God sent His only Son to die so His saving grace could be mine. Throughout the years Jesus has shown the way in the Bible, His footsteps I should follow. “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6). I have wandered from the path so straight and narrow only to find He had been with me and guiding me back from my wandering ways.

I have learned from the Bible how to live, forgive, help, and love. Speaking of love, He gave me a wonderful man I’ve been married to for over thirty years now. We have been blessed with two beautiful daughters and they’ve married and have started their families. I give thanks to God. Grandchildren are a deep pleasure and they’re in church every Wednesday and Sunday. I give thanks to God.

When I have been sad, depressed, angry, confused, or hurt by someone’s tongue or hands, I have been comforted by the Holy Spirit. “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever” (John 14:16). I give thanks to God.

Over the years God has been so kind and generous and any time is a good time to give thanks to God! He loves me unconditionally and wants the best for me, as He does for all His children.

God has been moving in my life for the past several years now in a direction I would never have believed possible. He has me on a path to encourage and inspire others through the internet and social networking sites. He has blessed me to build and maintain a website. I have no formal training to do this, it all comes from the faith He gives me.

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” (Romans 12:3).

My hope and prayer for people when they visit my website is that some will receive Jesus as their Savior, and Christians will be lifted up in such a way that their day is better.

Things to think about:

  • What are some things in your life for which you can give thanks to God?
  • Who is the Comforter that God sends to us once we’re saved?
  • Who does God give us to protect us?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for all Your many blessings in our life. We praise You for the Holy Spirit who You send as our Comforter. Thank You for the angels You have watching over us to protect us. You are a good God who loves us and cares for us in every way. Help us to always be grateful for all that You do for us. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Daily Bible Reading “Give Thanks to God for Your Faith and Love” (1 Thessalonians 3:1-13)

Give Thanks to God for Your Faith and Love

Today’s Daily Bible Reading is from 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13. This is part of the letter that Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica, which today is the second-largest city in Greece. In this chapter, Paul talks about the faith of the people. Paul, Silas, and Timothy had been driven out of Thessalonica and when they could no longer stand not knowing how the people were doing; they sent Timothy back to check on the people there.

Paul had ministered to these people and he had great concern for them that they would continue in the faith and not be tempted by the devil to give up on their beliefs. Paul didn’t want the people to be discouraged because of all the trials they had been through.

Trials in our life help us see what is going on in our hearts. When we are going through trying times, it is a time when we can grow even closer to God, if we allow it. We can learn to depend on God and trust Him to see us through the tough times in life. We can’t comfort others unless we have been through some tough times ourselves.

Paul felt comforted when Timothy came back with a good report from the Thessalonians. Timothy let him know they had kept the faith. Paul said he prayed for them day and night. Paul gives thanks to God for them and the joy he had in knowing they were strong in their faith.  They were staying true to the things of God that Paul had taught them.

Daily Bible Reading:

1 Thessalonians 3:1-13

1 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;
2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

Things to think about:

  • What would it be like to be persecuted because of your faith?
  • How can we make our faith known to others?
  • In what ways can we show charity (love) to other people?

Prayer of the Day:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the comfort You give us, especially when we are going through tough times.  Help us to keep the faith and know You work all things out for our good and Your glory. Help us to increase in our love for one another, and toward all people. Establish our hearts to be blameless in holiness before You. We love You, LORD. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
